      • Turkish Social Attitudes towards to Cancer Prevention: a Health Belief Model Study

Tasci-Duran, Emel,Koc, Sukran,Korkmaz, Medet Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.18

This research was planned to reveal society's attitude towards cancer and early diagnosis using the health belief model. This study was planned as descriptive research in Isparta. A random sample of n=256 individuals of both genders was recruited at the largest shopping center. As a means of collection tool, a survey consisted of two forms, the first designed for sociodemographic information and the second covering 29 questions suitable for the content of Health Belief Model. Of the participants, 66.8% were female and 33.2% were male, and the average age was $33.3{\pm}11.0$ years. Some 46.1% partly thought that they may develop cancer, and 49.6% were afraid of this possibility. As many as 50% indicated that cancer is an issue that comes from Allah. A significant difference was found between not going for control unless feeling bad, and blood analysis for cancer screening (${\chi}^2=3.780$ p= 0.03). It was seen that in an area with a high rate of cancer, people's awareness of cancer prevention and early diagnosis and attitudes towards these are insufficient.

      • Does Hopelessness of Turkish Women Affect their Behavior Regarding Cervical Cancer Prevention and Early Diagnosis?

Effects of Golden Thistle (Scolymus hispanicus L.) on Cytotoxic Activity: Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptotic Properties on the CaCo-2 Cell Line

Cansu Ozel-Tasci,Sukru Gulec 한국식품영양과학회 2022 Journal of medicinal food Vol.25 No.5

Cancer is a global concern for many individuals with high mortality rates, with colon cancer being the third most common diagnosed cancer worldwide. A phytochemical-rich diet is often recommended in the prevention and during the treatment of cancer cases. Golden thistle (GT) plant (Scolymus hispanicus L.) is a wild edible plant widely consumed in the Mediterranean countries. In this study, we aimed to obtain a hydromethanolic extract from three parts of the GT plant and test its antiproliferative activity in the CaCo-2 human adenocarcinoma cell line. Concentrations of the golden thistle extract (GTE) were used to treat CaCo-2 cells and the most significant reduction was detected with 4 mg/mL GTE after 72 h, with 78.3% decrease in cell viability (P < .05). Additionally, 4 mg/mL GTE caused 7.8-fold higher release of lactate dehydrogenase enzyme, indicating cell death after treatment. Flow cytometric analyses concluded both 3.3-fold higher early and late apoptotic activity of the 4 mg/mL GTE compared with the nontreated control group (P < .05). Last, 4 mg/mL GTE showed 24.1% reduction in the G1 phase and 38.1% increase in the S phase of cell cycle distribution. The alteration of G1 and S phases in the cell cycle led to growth reduction of CaCo-2 cells and caused apoptosis.

Investigation of crossflow features of a slender delta wing

        Mehmet O. Tasci,Ilyas Karasu,Besir Sahin,Huseyin Akilli 한국풍공학회 2020 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.31 No.3

In the present work, the main features of primary vortices and the vorticity concentrations downstream of vortex bursting in crossflow plane of a delta wing with a sweep angle of Λ=70° were investigated under the variation of the sideslip angles, β. For the pre-review of flow structures, dye visualization was conducted. In connection with a qualitative observation, a quantitative flow analysis was performed by employing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The sideslip angles, β were varied with four different angles, such as 0°, 4°, 12°, and 20° while angles of attack, α were altered between 25° and 35°. This study mainly focused on the instantaneous flow features sequentially located at different crossflow planes such as x/C=0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. As a summary, time-averaged and instantaneous non-uniformity of turbulent flow structures are altered considerably resulting in non-homogeneous delta wing surface loading as a function of the sideslip angle. The vortex bursting location on the windward side of the delta wing advances towards the leading-edge point of the delta wing. The trajectory of the primary vortex on the leeward side slides towards sideways along the span of the delta wing. Besides, the uniformity of the lift coefficient, CL over the delta wing plane was severely affected due to unbalanced distribution of buffet loading over the same plane caused by the variation of the sideslip angle, β. Consequently, dissimilarities of the leading-edge vortices result in deterioration of the mean value of the lift coefficient, CL.

Effect of seasonal changes on nutritional status and biochemical parameters in Turkish older adults

        Ersoy, Nesli,Tasci, Ilker,Ozgurtas, Taner,Salih, Bekir,Doruk, Huseyin,Rakicioglu, Neslisah The Korean Nutrition Society 2018 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.12 No.4

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Available data suggest that seasonal changes may influence the nutritional status and overall health of elderly individuals. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of seasonal changes and related factors on energy and nutrient intake of older adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Individuals aged 65 years or over were prospectively enrolled in this single-center study (male: 11, female: 20). Data were collected between May 2013 and February 2014 during winter, spring, summer and autumn. Food consumption and biochemical parameters were taken during each season to assess the seasonal nutrition status of the elderly. Upon analysis of biochemical parameters (retinol, vitamin D and vitamin C), an high-performance liquid chromatography device was utilized whereas an Immulite 2000 device was utilized during analysis of serum folic acid and parathyroid hormone. RESULTS: Fruit, fat, egg and bread consumption varied seasonally in males and females (P < 0.05). During winter, daily energy intake was found to be greater than in other seasons in males (557 kcal) and females (330 kcal) (P < 0.05). Additionally, carbohydrates, vegetable protein, n-3 fatty acid and sodium intake increased in winter, while the n-6/n-3 ratio increased in summer among males (P < 0.05). Dietary fiber and sodium intake in winter, vitamin C, iron and zinc intake in spring, and cholesterol, retinol, vitamin D and niacin intake in autumn were found to be higher in females when compared to other seasons (P < 0.05). Serum parathyroid hormone level was higher in winter, and vitamin D level was higher in autumn in both genders (P < 0.05). In males, blood folic acid level was higher in winter, while vitamin C level was higher in females, and there was no seasonal variation in retinol concentration (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Food consumption and biochemical parameters showed significant seasonal variations in older adults. It is not clear if nutrition plans in older adults will benefit from consideration of seasonal changes in eating habits.

The Effect of Ankaferd Blood Stopper on Colonic Inflammation: An In Vitro Study in RAW 264.7 and Caco-2 Cells

        Aysegul Alyamac,Cansu Ozel-Tasci,Sukru Gulec 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.12

Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) is a medicinal plant extract that has anti-inflammatory effect. Inflammatory bowel disease is a pathological condition that directly affects colon health and increases the risk of colon cancer. Especially inflammation is an important factor in the formation and progression of this disease. The aim of the study was to investigate the protective effect of ABS on colonic inflammation. Caco-2 and RAW 264.7 cells were used as a model of in vitro colonic inflammation. RAW 264.7 cells were treated with lipopolysaccharide for 12 h to induce inflammation, and an inflammatory medium (IM) was obtained. Caco-2 cells were treated with 15 μL/mL ABS for 4 h, then incubated with IM. The cells also were incubated with 15 μL/mL ABS and IM together for 12 h. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) protein levels were targeted in testing inflammatory condition and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mRNA level was used as a marker gene to show the possible anti-inflammatory effect of ABS in Caco-2 cells. TNF-α level was 26.1-fold higher than the control group. IM caused 3.2-fold increase in COX-2 expression in Caco-2 cells. Pretreatment of Caco-2 cells with ABS resulted in 3.3-fold decrease in COX-2 mRNA levels relative to IM group. Furthermore, COX-2 mRNA level reduced 4.7-fold when ABS and conditional medium were given at the same time. ABS has suppressive effect on COX-2 mRNA expression in Caco-2 cells. These results suggest that ABS might have protective and therapeutic effect for colonic inflammation.

      • Early and Late Complications after Inguinofemoral Lymphadenectomy for Vulvar Cancer

        Cirik, Derya Akdag,Karalok, Alper,Ureyen, Isin,Tasci, Tolga,Kalyoncu, Rukiye,Turkmen, Osman,Kose, M Faruk,Tulunay, Gokhan,Turan, Taner Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.13

Background: We aimed to determine the frequency of early and late complications following groin surgery for vulvar cancer and analyze possible risk factors. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 99 women who underwent for vulvar cancer. The early (${\leq}1$ month) complications were wound infection, breakdown and lymphocyst and late (>1 month) complications were lower limb lymphedema, incontinence and erysipelas. The risk factors for developing each of the complications were analyzed with regression analysis. Results: In the entire cohort, 29 (29.3%) women experienced early and 12 (12.1%) had late complications. Wound complications including infection and breakdown were the leading early complications (23.2%). In the multivariate analysis, both obesity (body mass index ${\geq}30kg/m^2$) and advanced age (${\geq}65years$) were found as independent predictive factors for early complications. Obese women of advanced age had 6.32 times more risk of experiencing any of the early complications, when compared to non-obese and young women (55.6% vs 8.7%). The most common late complication was lower limb lymphedema (10.1%) that was more frequently seen in young women. However, neither age nor lymph node count were significantly associated with the occurrence of lower limb lymphedema. Conclusions: More than 40% of the women suffered from postoperative complications after inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy in the current study. While advanced age and obesity were the significant predictors for any of the early complications, there was no identified risk factor for lower limb lymphedema.

      • RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OWNERSHIP AND INTERNET MARKETING IN HOTELS IN TURKEY

        Yasin Boylu,Asli D. A. Tasci 세계문화관광학회 2007 Conference Proceedings Vol.8 No.0

The Internet has been a distribution channel for companies especially in the 21st century. As in other industries and sectors, the Internet provides companies with ample opportunities to promote distribute and sell products directly to consumers. With its opportunities to be in direct contact with consumers 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, it provides hospitality businesses with necessary conditions to integrate into the global markets. However, not all hospitality establishments take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Internet. It is the thrust of this study that hotel ownership is one factor that defines the usage of the Internet for marketing purposes. Of 461 hoteliers surveyed, 171 responded; results showed that different types of hotel ownership were significantly more likely to have different web features. Implications and recommendations are provided.

Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, S-100 Protein and Synaptophysin Expression in Biliary Atresia Gallbladder Tissue

        Gurunluoglu, Semra,Ceran, Canan,Gurunluoglu, Kubilay,Kocbiyik, Alper,Gul, Mehmet,Yildiz, Turan,Bag, Harika Gozukara,Gul, Semir,Tasci, Aytac,Bayrakci, Ercan,Akpinar, Necmettin,Cin, Ecem Serbest,Ates, H The Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology 2021 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.24 No.2

Purpose: Biliary atresia (BA) is a disease that manifests as jaundice after birth and leads to progressive destruction of the ductal system in the liver. The aim of this study was to investigate histopathological changes and immunohistochemically examine the expression of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), synaptophysin, and S-100 protein in the gallbladder of BA patients. Methods: The study included a BA group of 29 patients and a control group of 41 children with cholecystectomy. Gallbladder tissue removed during surgery was obtained and examined immunohistochemically and histopathologically. Tissue samples of both groups were immunohistochemically assessed in terms of GDNF, S-100 protein, and synaptophysin expression. Expression was classified as present or absent. Inflammatory activity assessment with hematoxylin and eosin staining and fibrosis assessment with Masson's trichrome staining were performed for tissue sample sections of both groups. Results: Ganglion cells were not present in gallbladder tissue samples of the BA group. Immunohistochemically, GDNF, synaptophysin, and S-100 expression was not detected in the BA group. Histopathological examination revealed more frequent fibrosis and slightly higher inflammatory activity in the BA than in the control group. Conclusion: We speculate that GDNF expression will no longer continue in this region, when the damage caused by inflammation of the extrahepatic bile ducts reaches a critical threshold. The study's findings may represent a missing link in the chain of events forming the etiology of BA and may be helpful in its diagnosis.
