The retro-odontoid pseudotumor is often concurrent with atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS). Therefore, the pseudotumor is relatively common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but rare in primary osteoarthritis (OA). This is a case report of an elderly male patient suffering from neck pain and compression myelopathy caused by the craniocervical pseudotumor with OA but without atlantoaxial instability. He had long-lasting peripheral and spinal pain treated by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Imaging found upper cervical spondylosis without AAS or dynamic instability but with periodontoid calcifications and ossifications, suggesting calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition. Based on a comprehensive literature search and review, CPPD disease around the atlantodental joint is a possible contributor to secondary OA development and retro-odontoid pannus formation through chronic inflammation, which can be enough severe to induce compression myelopathy in non-RA patients without AAS. The global increase in the aged population advises caution regarding more prevalent upper cervical spine disorders associated with OA and CPPD.

There is little or no information about the distribution of elastic fibers in the human fetal head. We examined this issue in 15 late-stage fetuses (crown-rump length, 220–320 mm) using aldehyde-fuchsin and elastica-Masson staining, and we used the arterial wall elastic laminae and external ear cartilages as positive staining controls. The posterior pharyngeal wall, as well as the ligaments connecting the laryngeal cartilages, contained abundant elastic fibers. In contrast with the sphenomandibular ligament and the temporomandibular joint disk, in which elastic fibers were partly present, the discomalleolar ligament and the fascial structures around the pterygoid muscles did not have any elastic fibers. In addition, the posterior marginal fascia of the prestyloid space did contain such fibers. Notably, in the middle ear, elastic fibers accumulated along the tendons of the tensor tympani and stapedius muscles and in the joint capsules of the ear ossicle articulations. Elastic fibers were not seen in any other muscle tendons or vertebral facet capsules in the head and neck. Despite being composed of smooth muscle, the orbitalis muscle did not contain any elastic fibers. The elastic fibers in the sphenomandibular ligament seemed to correspond to an intermediate step of development between Meckel’s cartilage and the final ligament. Overall, there seemed to be a mini-version of elastic fiber distribution compared to that in adults and a different specific developmental pattern of connective tissues. The latter morphology might be a result of an adaptation to hypoxic conditions during development.

In recent years, LTE system with unlicensed bands is proposed. It can achieve not only to boost the capacity of cellular networks but also to use unlicensed bands effectively since LTE can achieve better spectrum efficiency than Wi-Fi. However, when LTE is introduced into an environment where Wi-Fi access points are already deployed, significant interference may be caused to Wi-Fi. Therefore, the coexistence of LTE and Wi-Fi with unlicensed bands is the problem. In this paper, we assume an environment where LTE base stations and Wi-Fi access points are deployed high-densely with unlicensed bands and co-channel interference frequently is caused. Then, we aim to enhance the average user throughput and its fairness through a centralized control of LTE and Wi-Fi. Specifically, we propose a channel assignment method and a users’ access system selection method using GA. The proposed method enhances both the average user throughput and the fairness of user throughput compared with conventional static channel assignment methods.

Nanocomposite particles composed of gold and iron oxide were synthesized with various ratios of gold and iron oxide in an aqueous phase using γ-rays. Iron oxide nanoparticles of γ-Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 were used as a magnetic phase on which gold nanoparticles with average diameters of 5-10 nm were supported. The efficiency of magnetic separation of biomolecules by the present nanocomposite particles was investigated using glutathione as a model compound. The amount of glutathione magnetically separated was significantly enhanced by the supported gold nanoparticles.
