■ Objectives The purpose of this case study is to report that a hypertension with intracerebral hemorrhage of tae-eumin was treated with 'Cheongsim Yeunja-tang' and then the symptoms were improved and blood pressure was decreased. ■ Methods Although the patient who had hypertension with intracerebral hemorrhage took antihypertension drugs, intermittent increase of blood pressure was shown. We diagnosed him as Tae-eumin and treated with Cheongsim Yeunja-tang. We daily checked blood pressure and evaluated the symptoms. ■ Results After the treatment with Cheongsim Yeunja-tang, blood pressure was decreased and symptoms were improved. ■ Conclusion The result shows Cheongsim Yeunja-tang has antihypertensive effect and improve hypertension symptoms of Tae-eumin patient with intracerebral hemorrhage.
Apoptosis in the craniofacial tissues of irradiated growing rats

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the apoptosis induction in tissues constituting the craniofacial region of growing rat by irradiation. Materials and Methods : The submandibular gland, brain, articular cartilage of condylar head, and calvarium were extracted from 20-day-old rats irradiated 10 Gy. Apoptosis of each tissue was examined by DNA fragmentation and estimated quantitatively using apoptotic index on TUNEL assay. Apoptotic index of each tissue was calculated by the equation for apoptotic cells/total cells × 1,000 on the images of confocal laser scanning microscopy. Apoptotic index was analyzed statistically according to the time lapse after irradiation on the tissues. Results : In the submandibular gland, apoptotic index was significantly increased from 6 hours after irradiation showing the highest value at 12 hours and decreased to the control level at 3 days after irradiation. In the brain, apoptotic index was abruptly reached to the maximum value at 6 hours after irradiation and decreased to the control level at 4 days after irradiation. Articular cartilage and calvarium showed no or little apoptotic signals. The results obtained by the apoptotic index accorded with that of DNA fragmentation. Conclusion : Radiation was closely related with the apoptosis of submandibular gland and brain but, not related with the apoptosis of the articular cartilage of condylar head and calvarium. The changes induced by radiation of the hard tissues would not be explained by apoptosis. (Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2001; 31 : 227-33)

Ischemia is a serious disease, characterized by an inadequate blood supply to an organ or part of the body. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the anti-microbial peptide SR-0379 on the stem cell-mediated therapy of ischemic diseases. The migratory and tube-forming abilities of human endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) were enhanced by treatment with SR-0379 in vitro. Intramuscular administration of SR-0379 into a murine ischemic hindlimb significantly enhanced blood perfusion, decreased tissue necrosis, and increased the number of blood vessels in the ischemic muscle. Moreover, co-administration of SR-0379 with EPCs stimulated blood perfusion in an ischemic hindlimb more than intramuscular injection with either SR-0379 or EPCs alone. This enhanced blood perfusion was accompanied by a significant increase in the number of CD31- and α-SMA-positive blood vessels in ischemic hindlimb. These results suggest that SR-0379 is a potential drug candidate for potentiating EPC-mediated therapy of ischemic diseases. [BMB Reports 2017; 50(10): 504-509]

The nematicidal activity of Kaempferia galanga rhizome-derived materials (methanol extract, steam distillate, and powder) toward M. incognita second-stage juveniles (J2) was examined using residual contact toxicity and pot bioassays. In residual contact toxicity bioassays with J2, the active principles of K. galanga rhizome were identified as the phenylpropanoids ethyl cinnamate (EC, 1) and ethyl-p-methoxycinnamate (EMC, 2) by spectroscopic analysis. EC exhibited 95% and 49% mortality at 0.06 and 0.04 mg/ml toward J2, respectively, whereas EMC showed 98% and 63% mortality at 0.1 and 0.08 mg/ml. In pot tests with J2, K. galanga rhizome methanol extract gave 92% and 82% mortality at 100 and 20 mg/50g soil, respectively. Steam distillate gave 88% and 68% mortality at 85 and 42.5 mg/50g soil, respectively, whereas rhizome powder provided 83% and 62% mortality at 400 and 200 mg/50g soil. K. galanga rhizome-derived materials, particularly EC and EMC, merit further study as potential root-knot nematode control agents or leads because of their great activity as a nematicide.

Simple benign tumors can present as part of a syndrome with substantial mortality. Fibrofolliculomas are benign skin tumors most often associated with the Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome (BHDS). The most life-threatening complication of this syndrome is renal cancer and other major features include multiple lung cysts and spontaneous pneumothorax. We present the case of a 54 year-old man with multiple flesh-colored papules on his face confirmed histologically as fibrofolliculomas. He had a history of recurrent pneumothorax and chest computed tomography showed multiple lung cysts. To confirm the diagnosis of BHDS, we conducted gene analysis that revealed a single nucleotide duplication in the folliculin (FLCN) gene (Exon 11, C.1285dupC). BHDS confirmed by the FLCN gene mutation is rarely reported in Korea. Appropriate investigation is recommended whenever a patient with benign skin tumors is encountered. Risk and protective factors for salutogenesis of adolescents with Moyamoya disease

Aim(s): To identify the risk and protective factors affecting salutogenesis in adolescents with Moyamoya disease based on Antonovsky’s salutogenesis theory. Method(s): This study used a qualitative descriptive design. We interviewed adolescents diagnosed with Moyamoya disease who were hospitalized or undergoing treatment at the outpatient clinic of X hospital in Seoul from July 4, 2019 to October 10, 2019. We also interviewed their parents and experts with experience in treating adolescents with Moyamoya disease. Data analysis was performed according to the process of deductive content analysis based on Antonovsky’s salutogenesis theory. Result(s): This study identified risk and protective factors affecting salutogenesis in adolescents with Moyamoya disease. Risk factors were closely related to problems with friends, parent relationships, and academic work. Protective factors were identified as social and emotional support through interpersonal relationships, positive attitudes of adolescents to the disease, ability to understand and predict patterns of symptoms, increasing strength to resolve the state of tension, and developing available resources in emergencies. Particularly, families of adolescents plays an important role in maintaining the health of adolescents with Moyamoya disease. Conclusion(s): The factors affecting salutogenesis in adolescents were identified by reflecting on the characteristics of the developmental stage of adolescents and the symptoms and situations that are unique to adolescents. In order for adolescents with Moyamoya to acquire and maintain health, it is important for them to recognize available resources and use them appropriately to successfully manage the state of tension caused by stress. Based on the results of this study, we suggest the development of interventions to maintain and promote the health of adolescents with Moyamoya disease.
Hyphantria cunea Nucleopolyhedrovirus, a Novel Baculovirus Isolated from Fall Webworm in Korea

To elucidate the novelty of Hyphantria cunea nucleopolyhedrovirus (HcNPV) isolated in Korea, polyhedron and inhibitor of apoptosis (iap) gene structures were determined and analyzed. The analysis of HcNPV polyhedrin showed a little difference with 97.6% at the nucleotide level but no difference at the amino acid level when compared with that of previously reported H. cunea NPV (HycuNPV). On the other hand, iap genes showed variable differences with 89.0-99.6% nucleotide and 90.0-99.6% amino acid sequence identities. Especially, the 5` and 3` non-coding flanking sequences of iap1 gene had lower degree of identity with those of HycuNPV. Although the phylogenetic analyses using polyhedrin and iap genes showed that HcNPV is closely related with HycuNPV, we could provide that HcNPV is a novel isolate having novel gene structures.

<P>Increasing evidence suggests that circulating angiogenic cells (CACs) promote repair of ischemic tissues. Activation of formyl peptide receptor 2 (Fpr2) has been reported to stimulate repair of ischemic heart. This study was conducted to investigate the role of Fpr2 on CAC mobilization and cardiac protection in myocardial infarction (MI). WKYMVm, a strong agonist for Fpr2, was administered in a murine model of acute MI, and mobilization of CACs including endothelial progenitor cells (CD34(+) Flk1(+) or Sca1(+) Flk1(+) cells) in peripheral blood was monitored. CAC mobilization by daily injection of WKYMVm for the first 4 days after MI was as efficient as granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and provided myocardial protection from apoptosis with increased vascular density and preservation of cardiac function. Transplantation of bone marrow (BM) from green fluorescent protein mice showed that BM-derived cells homed to ischemic heart after WKYMVm treatment and contributed to tissue protection. Transplantation of BM from Fpr2 knockout mice showed that Fpr2 in BM cells is critical in mediation of WKYMVm-stimulated myocardial protection and neovascularization after MI. These results suggest that activation of Fpr2 in BM after WKYMVm treatment provides cardiac protection through mobilization of CACs after MI, which may lead to the development of a new clinical protocol for treating patients with ischemic heart conditions.</P>
