Rationale: Longitudinal melanonychia (LM) may be caused by a wide variety of benign and malignant conditions. Benign LM may benefit from conservative approaches. Patient Concerns: We describe a 31-year-old man with LM on left big toe (Figure 1A) and a 33-year-old man with LM on right second toe (Figure 2A). Both of them worried about permanent nail deformity after surgery. Diagnoses: Dermoscopic examination of the two patients’ LM revealed symmetric longitudinal streaks with regular borders, a uniform color, width of the pigmentation less than 3mm, and without Hutchinson's sign. A benign condition was suggested. Interventions: Treatment with 1064nm picosecond laser was applied for two sessions at one-month treatment interval. Outcomes: The two patients’ LM became lighter to completely resolved (Figure 1B,and Figure 2B-D). No nail deformity developed after treatment Lessons: 1064nm picosecond laser could be an alternative nonsurgical treatment for LM with benign features. The limitation is no definite pathological diagnosis for single LM.

Cyanobacterial strains of the genus Spirulina have recently been identified as an excellent source of sulfolipids, some of which possess anti-HIV properties. Thus, to investigate the distribution of sufolipid biosynthesis pathways in Spirulina, a genetic screening/phylogentic study was performed. Five different strains of Spirulina [Spirulina (Jiangmen), Spirulina sp., S. platensis, S. maxima, and Spirulina seawater] sourced from different locations wereinitially classified via 16S rDNA sequencing, and then screened for the presence of the sulfolipid biosynthesis genes sqdB and sqdX via a PCR. To assess the suitability of these strains for human consumption and safe therapeutic use, the strains were also screened for the presence of genes encoding nonribosomal peptide synthases (NRPSs) and polyketide synthases (PKSs), which are often associated with toxin pathways in cyanobacteria. The results of the 16S rDNA analysis and phylogenetic study indicated that Spirulina sp. is closely related to Halospirulina, whereas the other four Spirulina strains are closely related to Arthrospira. Homologs of sqdB and sqdX were identified in Spirulina (Jiangmen), Spirulina sp., S. platensis, and the Spirulina seawater. None of the Spirulina strains screened in this study tested positive for NRPS or PKS genes, suggesting that these strains do not produce NRP or PK toxins.

This essay firstly introduces the institutional development of two sets of intertwined bilateral relations: US-PRC and US-ROC. Then, in order to understand these relations from a more formal perspective, historically important documents and pledges of the US and the practice or lack of US (vice) presidential visits are highlighted. Three conclusions are: (1) US relations with the PRC and with the ROC have been largely defined by the US’s and the PRC’s strategic circumstances and their respective top leaders’ ideologies or beliefs, whereas the ROC has had little capacity to act in this context; (2) the US has been ambivalent in its definition of “one China” but has always been unsupportive of the Taiwan independence movement while expressing its “one China” policy; and (3) the US, always refusing to position itself as a mediator, has remained the only and the most significant third party in the Taiwan Strait.

In this study, a series of experiments are performed to characterize the asymmetric V-die bending process for a High-strength steel(HSS) sheet. The main challenge in asymmetric V-die bending is positional deviation of the bending point during bending, given by amagnitude and a direction of deviation of the bending point. The effects of process parameters, such as radii of the punch head and thedie shoulder, on the positional deviation of the bending point were experimentally examined to identify those that govern the deviation ofthe bending point in an asymmetric bending process. This work improves our understanding of deviations of the bending point, and canbe used for developing process design guidelines for asymmetric bending of high-strength steel sheets to produce precise, asymmetricallybent parts.

This work evaluates the friction coefficient using the model of plastic hemispherical contact against a rigid flat. The fractional profile of an ellipsoid is utilized to describe the deformed hemispherical shape, and simultaneously define the contact area ratio. Particularly, an adhesion factor is defined to assess the junction ability of asperity adhesion under compressive loading. Additionally, the complex process of contact is assumed as a series of contact states changing from fracture to shearing. The friction coefficient, which obeys the constant friction law, is then derived as a function of interference and strain hardening exponent via adhesion theory. Finally, a comparison of friction coefficient is made with the published experiment, showing that the calculated value is larger than the experimental value. Some practical conclusions are presented and a conceptual understanding of contact friction is provided.

This work presents an indentation model of the Brinell hardness test, which is a rigid ball-deformable plane contact model (RB-DP model), to elucidate the sliding friction mechanism of sheet metal forming. In the proposed model, the friction force can be defined as a combination of shear (shearing effect) and plough (ploughing effect) forces. The real contact area ratio α is determined from the RBDP model under sliding condition. Moreover, the lateral contact area ratio / A_c A_r can be specified as a function of the real contact area ratio α . Based on Meyer’s law and Hertz contact problem, the maximum contact area ratio α_u , a limiting condition of the real contact area ratio α , can be described as a function of the strain hardening exponent n. Additionally, a limiting condition applies: the strain hardening exponent n must be less than 0.64 in the present model. The present friction model reveals that the friction coefficient μ_d is a function of strain hardening exponent n, the real contact area ratio α and the maximum contact area ratio α_u . The calculated friction coefficient μ_d agrees with the published experimental results.
