It is well known that cylinder steel stacks are heavily impacted by vortex-induced vibration. However, the wind-induced vibration behaviors of tower-supported steel stacks are not clarified due to a lack of observation. We studied a stack's response to strong winds over a long period of time by observing the extreme wind-induced vibration of a 200 m-high tower-supported steel stack. This experiment aimed to identify the wind-induced vibration properties of a tower-supported steel stack and assess the validity of the vibration control method used in the experiment. Results revealed a trend in wind-induced vibration behavior. In turn, an effective measure for controlling such vibration was defined by means of increasing the structural damping ratio due to the effects of the tuned mass damper to dramatically decrease the vortex-induced vibration of the stack.

Influence of Biaxial Loads on Impact Fracture of High-Strength Membrane Materials

Impact tests on high-strength membrane materials under biaxial loads were experimentally conducted in order to evaluate influence of biaxial loads on impact fracture of the membrane materials for the inflated applications. Cruciform specimens of the membrane materials were fabricated for applying biaxial loadings during the impact test. A steel ball was shot using a compressed nitrogen gas gun, and struck the membrane specimen. Impact tests on uniaxial strip specimens were also conducted to obtain the effect of specimen configuration and boundary condition on the impact fracture. The results of the measured crack length and the ultra-high speed photographs indicate the impact fracture properties of the membrane fabrics under biaxial loadings. Crack length due to the impact increased with applied tensile load, and the impact damages of the cruciform membrane materials under biaxial loadings were smaller than those of under uniaxial loadings. Impact fracture of the strip specimen was more severe than that of the cruciform specimen due to the difference of boundary conditions.
수질지표로서의 대장균군과 Coprostanol 과의 비교시험연구

To assess the fecal contamination, the coprostanol was measured by GC-MS in Chung Ryang stream from November 3, 1985 to May 25, 1986, which was much polluted by municipal sewage and night soil from the crowd residential area, a part of Seoul, along the stream. That was compared with the coliform group and was analyzed statistically. The result was obtain as follows ; The coprostanols were determined at 0.6-1.5 ng/1 in the range of concentrations. The concentrations were not significantly different from the up-stream to the down-stream. The numbers of coliform groups were gradually increased as lower the streams. It was shown in no relationships between the coprostanol and tee number of coliform groups in the stream(r = 0.18). With the above results, it is discussed that the coprostanol is not reliable in the determination of fecal contamination as an index of water qualities.
Safety Confirmation of Ship's Crew Using Cell-phone with GPS Receiver and Wireless LAN

Ships and their cargos have been managed safely by positioning report system. However, little attention has been paid to safety of crew's works with danger. The attempt that used PHS inboard was before by the present authors. However, the functions were just voice call and mail exchange. The data acquisition from the terminal by proper control was not possible. Thus the position of the terminal was not available. As for the cell phone of next generation, GPS receiver and wireless LAN are installed by manufacturers. Therefore, we propose a system which uses a cell-phone with GPS receiver on a ship in order to promote the safety of ship's crew. We checked the availability of cell-phone GPS receiver at thirty different points inboard. The positioning was not possible in the areas further than 4m from the window. Then, we proposed the system which follows the positions of the crews and confirms their safety inboard by using the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) function by wireless LAN.
