북서태평양지역해의 해양쓰레기 실천 계획에 대한 회원국별 이행과 지식 격차 평가

유엔환경계획의 지역해 프로그램 중 하나인 북서태평양보전실천계획은 한중일러가 회원국이다. 2008년 세계 지역해 중 처음으로 이 지역해에서 해양쓰레기 지역실천계획을 수립하였고 10년이 넘도록 개정없이 회원국들은 해양쓰레기의 예방과 모니터링, 그리고 수거를 위한 활동을 벌여왔다. 이 연구는 2018년부터 지역해 내 해양쓰레기에 대한 117편의 국제학술논문과 기타 보고서 및 지역전문가로부터 수집한 정보를 종합 분석한 것이다. 2차 지역실천계획 수립을 위해 회원국들의 계획 이행 실적을 평가하고 해양쓰레기에 대한 지식을 종합 검토하여 분야별 격차를 평가하였다. 평가 결과와 유엔환경계획의 지역해 가이드라인을 바탕으로 2021년 2차 지역실천계획 수립이 진행되고 있다. The Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP), one of the UN Environment Program's regional programs, has a member of Korea, China, Japan, and far east Russia. For the first time in the world in 2008, a Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter (RAP MALI) was established in the region, and member states have been engaged in activities to prevent, monitor and collect marine litter for more than a decade. This study is a comprehensive analysis of 117 international academic papers, other reports, and information collected from the experts nominated by national focal points in the region. In order to establish a second RAP MALI, the member states' implementation of the plan was assessed and the knowledge of marine litter was comprehensively reviewed to assess the gaps in each element. Based on the results of the evaluation and guideline by the UN Environment Plan, the 2nd RAP MALI is being established in 2021.

A 74-year-old male patient was conducted total thyroidectomy with functional neck dissection and final pathologic report confirm occult thyroid carcinoma. Although the frequency of occult thyroid cancer (OTC) has decreased owing to developments in cervical ultrasonography and improved accuracy of histological tests, rare cases are still reported. Due to the decreased frequency of OTC, a benign cervical neck lymph node mass is sometimes diagnosed, which can result in delays to more accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment. Therefore, we report our case.
Characteristics of meso-sized plastic marine debris on 20 beaches in Korea

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We surveyed the abundance and accumulation patterns of mesoplastic marine debris (5–25mm) on 20 beaches in Korea. The mean abundance of it was 13.2items/m<SUP>2</SUP>, and the mean weight was 1.5g/m<SUP>2</SUP>. Hard plastic and Styrofoam were the dominant types. The proportions of hard plastic and Styrofoam were highly variable among the beaches, each accounting for 0–100% of the total debris on a given beach with 32% and 48.5% (by number) on average, respectively. Relatively lower abundances of mesoplastic marine debris compared with our previous studies were likely due by differences of the sampling areas within the beach. The samples of this research were selected from backshore, middle line, and water edge whereas they were selected from high strandline and backshore in our previous studies. 한국 연안의 레크리에이션 낚시쓰레기 모니터링과 대응 방안 연구

해양쓰레기는 섭취, 얽힘, 서식지 손상 및 외래 종의 수송 등을 통해 야생 동물에 위협이 될 수 있다. 해양쓰레기가 야생 동물에 미치는 영향이 한국에서 보고된 바 있다. 이 연구에서 야생 동물에게 가장 빈번하게 영향을 미치는 해양쓰레기는 레크리에이션 낚시 쓰레기였다. 그러나 한국 연안의 낚시터에 어떤 종류의 낚시쓰레기가 얼마나 분포되어 있는지 파악하기 위한 연구는 거의 수행된 바 없다. 이 연구에서는 2018년~2020년까지 5개 광역시도 14개 낚시터에서 각 1회씩 낚시 쓰레기의 양과 종류를 조사했다. 또한 낚시쓰레기를 줄이기 위한 방안을 찾기 위해 약 550명의 낚시인을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 낚시쓰레기의 평균 밀도는 경남 지역에서 4.34 개/㎡, 경기 및 인천 지역에서 1.21 개/㎡, 강원 지역에서 2.38 개/㎡, 전남 지역에서 2.46 개/㎡를 기록하였다. 이 결과는 레크리에이션 낚시 쓰레기에 대한 대응책을 개발하고 그로 인한 악영향을 줄이는 데 도움이 될 것이다. Marine debris can be a threat to wildlife through ingestion, entanglement, damage to habitat, and transport of non-native species. The impact of marine debris on wildlife has been reported in Korea (Hong et al., 2014). They compiled 45 cases of wild animals affected by marine debris and elucidated 21 species of wild animals were affected. Recreational fishing gears were the most frequent type of debris affecting wildlife. However, no research has been conducted to monitor recreational fishing debris to figure out which fishing gears and how much of them are distributed in fishing ground on Korean coast. In this study, we surveyed recreational fishing debris in two metropolitan cities and twelve provinces between 2018 and 2020. The questionnaire surveys were also conducted for about 550 anglers to seek the reduction strategies against the debris. The mean densities of recreational fishing debris were 4.34 item/㎡ in Gyeongnam, 1.21 item/㎡ in Gyeongi and Incheon, 2.38 item/㎡ in Gangwon and 2.46 item/㎡ in Jeonam. The result will help develop countermeasures against recreational fishing debris and mitigate adverse impact of it.

Following a period of heavy rainfall in July 2011, a large amount of marine debris was washed up on the beaches of Geoje Island, South Korea, affecting the island's tourism industry. The tourism revenue decreased due to this pollution event and was estimated by multiplying the decreased number of visitors by the average expenditure of visitors to the beaches. Due to the fact that the visitor count at the Island's beaches decreased from 890,435 in 2010 to 330,207 in 2011 (i.e., a reduction of 560,228 persons, 63%), the tourism revenue loss of the island was estimated to be US$29 - 37 million. This study is one of the few to consider the economic effects of marine debris. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
