Treatment of the wide open wound in the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
Baik, Bong Soo,Lee, Wu Seop,Park, Ki Sung,Yang, Wan Suk,Ji, So Young Korean Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association 2019 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.20 No.2
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is an inherited disorder of collagen biosynthesis and structure, characterized by skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility, aberrant scars, and tissue friability. Besides the skin, skeleton (joint) and vessels, other organs such as the eyes and the intestine can be affected in this syndrome. Accordingly, interdisciplinary cooperation is necessary for a successful treatment. Three basic surgical problems are arising due to an EDS: decreased the strength of the tissue causes making the wound dehiscence, increased bleeding tendency due to the blood vessel fragility, and delayed wound healing period. Surgery patients with an EDS require an experienced surgeon in treating EDS patients; the treatment process requires careful tissue handling and a long postoperative care. A surgeon should also recognize whether the patient shows a resistance to local anesthetics and a high risk of hematoma formation. This report describes a patient with a wide open wound on the foot dorsum and delayed wound healing after the primary approximation of the wound margins.
Treatment of primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma
Baik, Bong Soo,Lee, Wu Seop,Ji, So Young,Park, Ki Sung,Yang, Wan Suk,Kim, Sun Young Korean Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association 2019 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.20 No.3
Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (C-ALCL) is a rare subtype of primary cutaneous lymphoma with a favorable prognosis. Primary cutaneous CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorders, which include C-ALCL and lymphomatoid papulosis, are the second most common group of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. C-ALCL is comprised of large cells with anaplastic, pleomorphic, or immunoblastic cytomorphology, and indeed, more than 75% of the tumor cells express the CD30 antigen. C-ALCL clinically presents with solitary or localized reddish-brown nodules or tumors, and sometimes indurated papules, and they may be with ulceration covering with dark eschar. Multifocal lesions are seen in 20% of the patients. Extracutaneous dissemination, which mainly involves the regional lymph nodes, occurs in 10% of patients. A 69-year-old man noticed a mild elevated cutaneous lesion containing central ulceration covering with brownish black necrotic tissue on the right lower lip, and the lesion was surgically removed. After the first operation, another skin lesion was developed and the histological examination confirmed the diagnosis, C-ALCL. Eight specimens were excised during the 7-month follow-up period. The patient started the treatment with low-dose oral methotrexate (15 mg/wk) and there was no recurrence for 11 months.

<P>A non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 02SUJ3T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Juam Reservoir (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The main polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 46.4 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 02SUJ3T forms an independent lineage within the genus <I>Flavisolibacter</I> with low sequence similarity to <I>Flavisolibacter ginsengiterrae</I> Gsoil 492T and <I>Flavisolibacter ginsengisoli</I> Gsoil 643T (95.7 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain 02SUJ3T from members of the genus <I>Flavisolibacter</I>. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain 02SUJ3T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name <I>Flavisolibacter</I> <I>rigui</I> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 02SUJ3T ( = JCM 17515T = KCTC 23328T). An emended description of the genus <I>Flavisolibacter</I> is also provided.</P>
Spirosoma rigui sp. nov., isolated from fresh water
Baik, Keun Sik,Kim, Mi Sun,Park, Seong Chan,Lee, Dong Wan,Lee, Soon Dong,Ka, Jong-Ok,Choi, Sang Ki,Seong, Chi Nam Microbiology Society 2007 International journal of systematic and evolutiona Vol.57 No.12
<P>A Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented bacterium capable of gliding motility, designated strain WPCB118(T), was isolated from fresh water collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Cells were rod-shaped and sometimes filamentous. The major fatty acids were iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH and/or C(16 : 1)omega7c (45.6 %), C(16 : 1)omega5c (18.5 %), iso-C(15 : 0) (9.5 %) and C(16 : 0) (8.8 %). The predominant menaquinone and polar lipid were MK-7 and phosphatidylethanolamine, respectively. The DNA G+C content was 53.3 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB118(T) had an evolutionary lineage within the radiation encompassing the members of the family 'Flexibacteraceae', its closest neighbour being Spirosoma linguale LMG 10896(T) (93.7 % gene sequence similarity). Data from this polyphasic study indicated that strain WPCB118(T) could not be assigned to any recognized species. Strain WPCB118(T) represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB118(T) (=KCTC 12531(T)=NBRC 101117(T)).</P>
A Promoter SNP (rs1800682, -670C/T) of FAS Is Associated with Stroke in a Korean Population
Kang, Sung-Wook,Chung, Joo-Ho,Kim, Dong-Hwan,Yun, Dong-Hwan,Yoo, Seung-Don,Kim, Hee-Sang,Seo, Wan,Yoon, Jee-Sang,Baik, Hyung-Hwan Korea Genome Organization 2010 Genomics & informatics Vol.8 No.4
The Fas (TNF receptor superfamily, member 6) (FAS)/FAS ligand (FASLG) interaction plays a central role in the regulation of programmed cell death. FAS and FASLG polymorphisms in promoter regions affect transcriptional activities. To investigate whether FAS and FASLG polymorphisms are associated with the development and clinical phenotypes of stroke, 2 promoter single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in FAS (rs1800682, -670C/T) and FASLG (rs763110, -844C/T) were selected and genotyped by direct sequencing in 220 stroke patients [107 ischemic stroke (IS), 77 intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and 36 subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)] and 369 control subjects. For the analysis of clinical symptoms, all stroke patients were divided into 3 clinical phenotypes according to the respective results of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Survey (NIHSS) and the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) and the presence or absence of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The SNPStats, SNPAnalyzer, and Helixtree programs were used to analyze the genetic data. Multiple logistic regression models (codominant, dominant, and recessive) were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs), 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and p-values. The promoter SNP rs1800682 was associated with stroke in the codominant (OR=0.48, 95% CI=0.25-0.94, p=0.04) and dominant models (OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.30-0.87, p=0.011). However, a FASLG SNP (rs763110) was not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p<0.05). In the analysis of stroke types, rs1800682 was associated with IS in the codominant (OR=0.30, 95% CI=0.12-0.74, p=0.025), dominant (OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.23-0.88, p=0.018), and recessive models (OR=0.45, 95% CI=0.21-0.99, p=0.042). The genotype frequencies of rs1800682 were different between ICH and controls in the dominant model (OR=0.49, 95% CI=0.26-0.94, p=0.031) but not between SAH and controls. In the analysis of clinical symptoms, however, rs1800682 was not related to the 3 clinical phenotypes (NIHSS, MBI, and CRPS). These results suggest that a promoter SNP (rs1800682, -670C/T) in FAS may be associated with the development of stroke in the Korean population.
