Phellinus linteus has traditionally been used as a medicinal mushroom in Oriental countries. Bioactive phytochemicals from the fruiting body of P. linteus were investigated using the on-line HPLC-DPPH system. The system was used to separate 10 antioxidants: protocatechuic acid (1) protocatechualdehyde, (2) caffeic acid (3), ellagic acid (4), hispidin (5), davalliallactone (6), interfungins A (7), hypholomine B (8), inoscavin A (9), and methyldavallialactone (10). Of these, compounds 6 and 7 showed the strongest inhibitory effect against the DPPH radical and superoxide anion radical-scavenging capacity. On comparison with quercetin ($IC_{50}$, 44.0 ${\mu}M$), the $IC_{50}$ value of compounds 6 and 7 for DPPH radical-scavenging capacity were 19.6 ${\mu}M$ and 18.5 ${\mu}M$. Moreover, the antioxidative capacity of compound 6 at 40mM was 2.95 nmol Trolox equivalents per mg dry wt. These results indicated that hispidin dimers such as hispidin with hispidin or hispolon had a stronger effect on radical-scavenging capacity than hispidin itself.

Background: Though antenatal magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is widely used for fetal neuroprotection, suspicions about the long-term neuroprotection of antenatal MgSO4 have been raised. Methods: We investigated short- and long-term outcomes of antenatal MgSO4 use for 468 infants weighing < 1,500 g with a gestational age of 24–31 weeks. Results: Short-term morbidities and the risk of developmental delay, hearing loss, and cerebral palsy at a corrected age of 18–24 months and 3 years of age did not decrease in the MgSO4 group (infants who were exposed to MgSO4 for any purpose) or neuroprotection group (infants who were exposed to MgSO4 for fetal neuroprotection) compared with the control group (infants who were not exposed to MgSO4). The z-scores of weight, height, and head circumference did not increase in the MgSO4 group or neuroprotection group compared with the control group. Conclusion: Antenatal MgSO4 including MgSO4 for neuroprotection did not have beneficial effects on long-term neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes.

<P>Atherosclerosis is a chronic progressive inflammatory disorder and the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality. Here we assessed the dynamic changes of T-cell-derived cytokines, such as inteferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-4, during the progression of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-null (ApoE−/−) mice, to understand the role of immune responses in different stages of atherosclerosis. Male ApoE−/− mice were fed a high-fat, western-type diet (WD: 21% lipid, 1.5% cholesterol) after 5 weeks of age and were compared with C57BL/6 wild-type control mice fed a standard chow diet. Atherosclerotic lesions appeared in the aortic sinus of ApoE−/− mice 4 weeks after WD and the lesions progressed and occupied >50% of the total sinus area 16 weeks after WD. Aortic IL-17 mRNA and protein expression started to increase in ApoE−/− mice after 4 weeks on the WD and peaked at around 8–12 weeks on the WD. In terms of systemic expression of T-cell-derived cytokines, IL-17 production from splenocytes after anti-CD3/CD28 stimuli increased from 4 weeks on the WD, peaked at 12 weeks and returned to control levels at 16 weeks. The production of IFN-γ and IL-4 (Th1 and Th2 cytokines, respectively) from splenocytes was delayed compared with IL-17. Taken together, the present data indicate that Th17 cell response may be involved at an early stage in the development of atherosclerosis.</P>

30-year-old male was admitted with general weakness and drowsy mental status. He had eaten only 3-4 spoons of brown rice and fresh vegetable without salt for 3 months to treat his tic disorder, and he had been in bedridden state. He has had weight loss of 14 kg in the last 3 months. We report a patient with orthorexia nervosa who developed hyponatremia, metabolic acidosis, subcutaneous emphysema, mediastinal emphysema, pneumothorax, and pancytopenia and we will review the literature. Also, we mention to prevent refeeding syndrome, and to start and maintain feeding in malnourished patients.
Enzymatic Conjugation of RGD Peptides on the Surface of Fibroin Microspheres
( Hyun Sang Jeon ),( Jin Sil Lee ),( Won Hur ) 한국공업화학회 2020 공업화학 Vol.31 No.1
Biomaterials are frequently functionalized with Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptides to provide cell adhesion sites. In this study, RGD peptides were enzymatically coupled on to the surface of fibroin microspheres. Papain exhibited a strong preference for dansyl phenylalanine for the peptide formation with fibroin microspheres. Thus, RGD1 peptide was designed to carry cysteine to both sides of the sequence, glycine as a spacer and two residues of phenylalanine at the C-terminal (CRGDCGFF). The enzymatic modification facilitated by an increasing amount of substrate and by the presence of organic solvent, dimethylsulfoxide at 25% (v/v). Microspheres coupled with RGD1, showed a significantly different precipitation property and an increased apparent volume, possibly due to the steric hindrance of RGD peptides on the surface. Transmission electron microscopy also confirmed the presence of cysteine residues in RGD1 coupled on the surface of microspheres stained with gold nanoparticles. RGD1-microspheres significantly facilitated the growth of murine fibroblast 3T3 cells even under non-adhesion culture conditions.
