        Korean English Teacher's Disempowerment in English-only Classes

The Sociolinguistic journal of Korea 18(1). In this case study, we have focused on the disempowerment of a Korean English teacher (KET) in English-only classrooms. Six English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms in a Korean high school were observed and analyzed by using interpretive discourse analysis. Out of the six classes, three representative classrooms were both video- and audio-taped. The results show that the English-only classes could weaken the KETs' power via three mechanisms: (a) calling the KETs' last name for choral greetings at the beginning of the class, (b) students' group solidarity and peer pressure between classmates, and (c) the students' excessively collaborative approach to peer assistance. It is argued that the exclusive English-only instruction disempowers the KETs' status and dismantles their vocational identity. In order to remedy the current situation, within a scaffolding supported by the eclectic use of first language where necessary for effective class management, KETs are empowered and overcome constraints imposed by the limited L2 oral competence of some non-native English teachers.

        폐쇄성 수면무호흡 환자의 상기도 형태의 특징과 압력강하에 관한 3차원 전산유체역학해석

        폐쇄성 수면무호흡(obstructive sleep apnea, OSA)은 수면 중에 반복적으로 상기도의 완전폐쇄나 부분폐쇄가 일어나는 질환으로서 흡기된 공기는 반드시 상기도라는 연조직 관(tube) 구조를 통과해야 하므로 상기도의 폐쇄경향은 관의 형태 및 관을 통과하는 공기의 유체역학적 특성에 따라서도 큰 영향을 받을 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 OSA 환자 3인의 치료 전 상기도 CT 이미지를 이용하여 개별화된 3차원 유한요소모델 A, B, C를 제작하고, 비공 당 170, 200, 230 ml/s의 흡기유량에 대하여 3차원 전산유체역학 해석을 시행하였다. 상기도의 유속, 음압 그리고 압력강하를 측정한 결과 관찰된 3개의 모델에서 모두 단면적이 가장 작은 부위에서 유속이 증가하였고, 음압이 크게 나타났다. 기도의 형태는 구개인두와 구인두 부위에서 좁아지는 형태를 가지며, 최소 단면적 영역과 하인두 단면적의 차이가 클수록 유속과 음압의 변화가 크게 나타났다. 비강 부위의 최고 압력과 최소 단면적 영역의 최저 압력의 차이를 의미하는 압력강하는 상기도 저항을 종합적으로 판단할 수 있는 유용한 지표이며, 유량에 따라 증가하였다. Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder which is characterized by a recurrence of entire or partial collapse of the pharyngeal airway during sleep. A given tidal volume must traverse the soft tissue tube structure of the upper airway, so the tendency for airway obstruction is influenced by the geometries of the duct and characteristics of the airflow in respect to fluid dynamics. Methods: Individualized 3D FEA models were reconstructed from pretreatment computerized tomogram images of three patients with obstructive sleep apnea. 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis was used to observe the effect of airway geometry on the flow velocity, negative pressure and pressure drop in the upper airway at an inspiration flow rate of 170, 200, and 230 ml/s per nostril. Results: In all 3 models, large airflow velocity and negative pressure were observed around the section of minimum area (SMA), the region which narrows around the velopharynx and oropharynx. The bigger the Out-A (outlet area)/ SMA-A (SMA area) ratio, the greater was the change in airflow velocity and negative pressure. Conclusions: Pressure drop meaning the difference between highest pressure at nostril and lowest pressure at SMA, is a good indicator for upper airway resistance which increased more as the airflow volume was increased.

        치수절단 후 접착레진 도포에 대한 잔존치수조직 반응에 관한 연구

        This study was performed to observe the histopathological response to the bonding resin directly applied on the remaining pulp tissuse. 40 teeth from 3 adult dogs were pulpotomized with a sterile round but and sharp excarvater. In the control group, Ca(OH)_2 powder was applied on the pulp tissue and the cavities were sealed with IRM cement. In the experimental group 1, Superbond C&B was applied on the remaining pulp and the cavities conditioned with 10-3 solution were filled with the mixture of the MMA liquid, PMMA powder and Catalyst. Multi-purpose adhesive was used on the remaining pulp tissue in the experimental group 2 and Z-100 was filled in the cavities. In the experimental group 3, Clearfil photobond applied and directly photo=cured on the pulp tissue, then the cavitieswere treated wit CA agent (10% citric acid and 20% CaCl_2 aqueous solution) for 20 seconds, washed and applied with Clearfil photobond then filled with Protect liner. The experimental animals were sacrified at the 1st, 2nd, and 4th week. The specimens were routinely processed and stained with H-E for light microscopic observation. The results were as followed : 1. In the experimental group 1, the number and characteristics of the dentin bridge formation case was similar to those in the control group and less cases were observed in the experimental group 2 and 3 than experimental group 3. The inflammatory response in experimental group 1 was less than that in the control group at 1st week but there had been little difference at between 2nd and 4th week. 2. The number of the dentin bridge in experimental group 2 was less than that in control group and experimental group 1. The inflammatory response of the experimental group 1 was similar to that of experimental group 1 but less than that of the control group. A number of bleeding and vascular congestion were observed. The least inflammatory response was seen in the experimental group 2 among all groups. 3. In the experimental group 3. one case of the dentin bridge formation was observed and that was the same as that in the experimental group 2 but smaller than that of the control and experimental group 1. The inflammatory response of the experimental group 3 was least at the 1st week and most at the 4th week in the all group.

      • 저온 저장 감귤에서의 MA포장의 효과

        The effects of MA packaging on the low temperature storage of satsuma mandarin, overwintering satsuma and Kiyomi tangor were investigated. Thickness of film, holes in film and incorporation of antimicrobial agent were considered as parameters for MA packaging. Chitosan was applied to surface of fruits to determine the effects of coation during MA storage. Thickness of film and holes in a bag did not affect decay ratios in three fruits. Decay ratio of satsuma mandarin packaged with LDPE film with 2-5% ceramic antimicrobial agent slightly decreased. Chitosan coating lowered decay ratio of fruit during MA storage. MA packaging with LDPE film was effective in lowering weight loss and preventing delamination of fruits. MA packaging did not affect qualities of fruit during storage.

        신생흰쥐의 피부내 Fibronectin의 분포변화에 대한 면역조직학적 연구

        Fibronectin is a well known glycoprotein of extracellular connective tissue matrices due to a specific amino acid-sequence(RGD) suggested to act as an attachment factor in cell-cell or cell-matrix interactions. Although also present in dermis of skin, little is known about the distribution of fibronectin in the skin. To obtain data for distribution on skin, we used immunolocalization techniques to quantitatively examine the distribution of fihronectin in various layers of skin by developmental stages of rats. The study was focused on fibronectin distributions of skin in 7 developmental stages of newborn rats. The results were obtained as follows. 1. Stratum lucidum and granulosum in epidermis showed the strong fibronectin immunoreactivities from day 1 to day 5 neonatal stages of rats. But at the 1st week after birth, fibronectin immunoactivities on the epidermis were diminished as much as those of control group rats. 2. At 1 day and 5 day after birth, strong immunoreactivities of fibronectin were seen in papillary layer of dermis moderate or wreak immunoreactivities in reticulum layer of dermis. 3. At the epidrmal-dermal bored(basement membrane) and hair follicles, moderate fibronectin immunotivities were increased from 1 day to 5 day after birth. But from the 2nd week after birth, immunoreactivities of fibronectin were decreased to be weak reactions. It is suggested that large amounts of the fibronectin distribution in the neonatal rat skin will be devoted to rapid formation of dermal tissue.

        흉배혈관의 근피 천공분지에 기초한 유리피판의 임상적 이용

        The latissimus dorsi muscle or musculocutaneous flap is one of the most useful flaps in reconstructive surgery. This flap has many advantages, such as its reliable anatomy, long pedicle with large caliber vessels, minimal functional deficit of the donor site, and low incidence of donor site complications. However, the bulkiness of the flap has been considered a disadvantage, so various modifications of technique have been devised. The cutaneous portion of the flap can be safely elevated based on the cutaneous perforating branch of the thoracodorsal vessel. From March 1997 to February 1998, 10 patients underwent reconstructive procedures with thoracodorsal perforator-based free flaps. The composition of the flaps varied in accordance with the nature of the defect. The variances in the flaps were as follows; 3 were cutaneous, 6 musculocutaneous, and 1 osteomusculocutaneous including the rib. All flaps survived with good contour. We concluded that this thin and reliable flap was useful for reconstruction of various defects, and that the composition of the flap, such as subcutaneous, muscle and bone, gave it considerable flexibility as needed.

      • 저장전 Ca 처리가 온주밀감의 저장성에 미치는 영향

        ABSTRACT The storage effects of satsuma mandarin( Citrus unshiu. Marc. cv. Miyagawa Wase) by immersion in 4% CaCl2 and 1,300 folds diluted solution of Indasen(fungicide) were investigated. The pretreated citrus fruits at 35℃ for 24 hrs were stored at 3℃. 85% relative humidity, and at room temperature without humidity control. Soluble solids, acid content, firmness and vitamin C content of fruits were 11.41oBrix, 1.28%, 945.0 g-force and 45.61mg/100g, respectively. The pretreated fruits with CaCl2 did not affect weight loss, but was effective on reduction of decay ratio and retention of firmness in some degree. Ca treatment did not affect the change of soluble solids, acid content and vitamin C, compared to non-treatment. Coloration of stored fruits was improved with Ca treatment in a degree, furthermore coloration was progressed continuously on room temperature.
