<P>The critical initiating event in atherogenesis involves the invasion of monocytes through the endothelial walls of arteries and the transformation of monocytes from macrophages into foam cells. Human THP-1 monocytic cells can be induced to differentiate into macrophages by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) and can then be converted into foam cells by exposure to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). Also, during a chronic inflammatory response, monocytes/macrophages produce the 92-kDa matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) that may contribute to the extravasation, migration, and tissue remolding capacities of the phagocytic cells. Here, we investigate the effect of ascochlorin (ASC), a prenylphenol antiviral compound from the fungus Ascochyta viciae, on oxLDL-induced MMP-9 expression and activity in human THP-1 macrophages. ASC reduced oxLDL-induced MMP-9 expression and activity in a time-dependent and dose-dependent manner. Also, an analysis of MMP-9 activity using pharmacologic inhibitors showed that ASC inhibits MMP-9 activity via the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and kinase 2 pathways. Our results suggest that ASC may be useful as a potent clinical antiatherogenic agent, a topic of considerable interest in the biological chemistry of chemotherapeutic agents. J. Cell. Nonvolatile Polymer Memory with Nanoconfinement of Ferroelectric Crystals

<P>We demonstrate significantly improved performance of a nonvolatile polymeric ferroelectric field effect transistor (FeFET) memory using nanoscopic confinement of poly(vinylidene fluoride-<I>co</I>-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) within self-assembled organosilicate (OS) lamellae. Periodic OS lamellae with 30 nm in width and 50 nm in periodicity were templated using block copolymer self-assembly. Confined crystallization of PVDF-TrFE not only significantly reduces gate leakage current but also facilitates ferroelectric polarization switching. These benefits are due to the elimination of structural defects and the development of an effective PVDF-TrFE crystal orientation through nanoconfinement. A bottom gate FeFET fabricated using a single-crystalline triisopropylsilylethynyl pentacene channel and PVDF-TrFE/OS hybrid gate insulator shows characteristic source-drain current hysteresis that is fully saturated at a programming voltage of ±8 V with an ON/OFF current ratio and a data retention time of approximately 10<SUP>2</SUP> and 2 h, respectively.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2011/nalefd.2011.11.issue-1/nl103094e/production/images/medium/nl-2010-03094e_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl103094e'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) film was formed on a glass substrate by using the dip-coating method and the resulting material used as a transparent glass heater. The heaters have an optical transparency above 95% in visible light. Their performance was investigated by measuring their heating/cooling characteristics and thermal resistance. They have a heating performance that is ∼70% higher than that of Pt film heaters, which are widely used. The thickness dependence of the thermal resistance is observed, and can be understood in relation to heat-transfer losses that are related to the porous structure of the SWCNT film. The stability and reliability of the heater were also investigated.</P>

<P>Urolithiasis is common and is becoming more prevalent worldwide. This study assessed the chronological trends in clinical and urinary metabolic features over 20 years in Korean urolithiasis patients. We performed a retrospective analysis of 4,076 patients treated at our clinic from 1996 to 2015. Urinary metabolic data and stone analysis data were available for 1,421 and 723 patients (34.9% and 17.7%), respectively. Patients were categorized into 4 groups according to the date of initial diagnosis: group 1 (1996–2000, n = 897), group 2 (2001–2005, n = 1,018), group 3 (2006–2010, n = 1,043), and group 4 (2011–2015, n = 1,118). Incidental detection of uric acid renal stones has become more prevalent in the past 10 years, accompanied by an increase in body mass index and age at diagnosis. Similarly, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and of hypertension increased from one group to the next throughout the study period. Levels of 24-hour urinary excretion of sodium, calcium, uric acid, and oxalate have decreased significantly over the study period. The incidence of urinary metabolic abnormalities also showed an identical tendency. The proportion of stones composed of uric acid increased over the study period. In conclusion, incidental detection of uric acid renal stones has become more prevalent in Korea in the past 20 years. Urinary excretion of lithogenic constituents and the incidence of urinary metabolic abnormalities have decreased significantly over this period.</P>

<P>Purpose: To assess the association between dyslipidemia and urolithiasis, a propensity score-matching study was performed. Patients and Methods: Fasting blood samples were taken, and serum lipid profiles were measured in 655 stone formers (SF) and 1965 propensity score-matched controls between 2005 and 2011. The controls, from a health-screening program, did not have a history of dyslipidemia or statin use and have any evidence of stone disease, as determined by abdominal radiography, ultrasonography examination. Propensity score-matching with respect to age, sex, and body mass index was used to minimize selection bias, and the logistic regression analysis was adjusted for other components of metabolic syndrome. Results: Compared with controls, the SF group had significantly higher mean triglyceride and lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels (each P < 0.001). The SF group was also more likely to have hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterolemia, and less likely to have hypercholesterolemia and high LDL cholesterolemia compared with controls (each P< 0.05). When adjusted for other components of metabolic syndrome including obesity, presence of diabetes mellitus or hypertension, the odds ratio (OR) for urinary stones appeared with hypercholesterolemia (OR= 0.747, P = 0.003), hypertriglyceridemia (OR= 1.901, P < 0.001), low HDL cholesterolemia (OR= 1.886, P < 0.001) and high LDL cholesterolemia (OR= 0.610, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study implies that dyslipidemia may play a crucial part in urinary stone risk.</P>

Background: An implantable loop recorder (ILR) is an effective tool for diagnosing unexplained syncope (US). We examined the diagnostic utility of an ILR in detecting arrhythmic causes of US and determining which clinical factors are associated with pacemaker (PM) implantation. Methods: This retrospective, multicenter, observational study was conducted from February 2006 to April 2018 at 11 hospitals in Korea. Eligible patients with recurrent US received an ILR to diagnose recurrent syncope and document arrhythmia. Results: A total of 173 US patients (mean age, 67.6 ± 16.5 years; 107 men [61.8%]) who received an ILR after a negative conventional workup were enrolled. During a mean follow-up of 9.4 ± 11.1 months, 52 patients (30.1%) had recurrent syncope, and syncope- correlated arrhythmia was confirmed in 34 patients (19.7%). The ILR analysis showed sinus node dysfunction in 24 patients (70.6%), supraventricular tachyarrhythmia in 4 (11.8%), ventricular arrhythmia in 4 (11.8%), and sudden atrioventricular block in 2 (5.9%). Overall, ILR detected significant arrhythmia in 99 patients (57.2%) irrespective of syncope. Among patients with clinically relevant arrhythmia detected by ILR, PM implantation was performed in 60 (34.7%), an intra-cardiac defibrillator in 5 (2.9%), and catheter ablation in 4 (2.3%). In a Cox regression analysis, history of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) (hazard ratio [HR], 2.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33–4.12; P < 0.01) and any bundle branch block (BBB) (HR, 2.52; 95% CI, 1.09–5.85; P = 0.03) were significantly associated with PM implantation. Conclusion: ILR is useful for detecting syncope-correlated arrhythmia in patients with US. The risk of PM is high in US patients with a history of PAF and any BBB.
Factors to Assess for Re-breeding after Parturition in Milking Cows

The purpose of this study was to assess for re-breeding concentrate period in postpartum in milking cows. The 48 cows aged 3.5~5.5 years and of 400~600 kg body weight were examined every 3rd day from 15 to 36 day postpartum. Blood samples for progesterone and estradiol 17 β hormone analyses were withdrawn from the coccygeal vein every third day until the end of the experiment. The ovarian follicular numbers were verified and measured using a multi frequency probe. The least squares means are presented for each day by GLM of SAS. The results showed that ovary lengths (right ovary; 1.64±0.62 cm, left ovary; 1.44±0.46 cm) were similar in right and left ovary activity level during estrous cycle of postpartum cows. We were judged completed uterus on day at 2.31±0.17 cm level of cervix diameter. And we were monitoring started at 6.44±2.03 cm from day 15 after postpartum. The results showed that mean plasma concentration of progesterone (3.28 ng/ml) in large follicle gradually increased days 30 in postpartum. And, monitoring of estradiol 17β (22.18 pg/ml) hormone during postpartum period would be useful to predict the ovarian and uterus activity for re-breeding in postpartum milking cows. From these results, we conclude that cervix diameter (mean: 2.31 cm) was very important for reproductive organ recovery standard level of postpartum milking cows, hormone secretion level (P4: 3.28 ng/ml, E2: 22.18 pg/ml) and body condition score (2.5~2.75) level about 30 days in postpartum period.
