      • Planck Cold Clumps in the <i>λ</i> Orionis Complex. II. Environmental Effects on Core Formation

        <P>Based on the 850 mu m dust continuum data from SCUBA-2 at James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), we compare overall properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the lambda Orionis cloud to those of PGCCs in the Orion A and B clouds. The Orion A and B clouds are well-known active star-forming regions, while the A Orionis cloud has a different environment as a consequence of the interaction with a prominent OB association and a giant H-II region. PGCCs in the lambda Orionis cloud have higher dust temperatures (T-d = 16.13 +/- 0.15 K) and lower values of dust emissivity spectral index (beta = 1.65 +/- 0.02) than PGCCs in the Orion A (T-d = 13.79 +/- 0.21 K, beta = 2.07 +/- 0.03) and Orion B (T-d = 13.82 +/- 0.19 K, beta =1.96 +/- 0.02) clouds. We find 119 substructures within the 40 detected PGCCs and identify them as cores. Out of a total of 119 cores, 15 cores are discovered in the lambda Orionis cloud, while 74 and 30 cores are found in the Orion A and B clouds, respectively. The cores in the lambda Orionis cloud show much lower mean values of size R = 0.08 pc, column density N(H-2) (9.5 +/- 1.2) x 10(22)cm(-2) , number density n(H-2) - (2.9 +/- 0.4) x 10 5 CM -3 , and mass M-core = 1.0 +/- 0.3 M(circle dot)compared to the cores in the Orion A [R = 0.11 pc, N(H-2) = (2.3 +/- 0.3) x 10(23) cm(-2), n(H-2) = (3.8 +/- 0.5) x 10(5)cm(-3) , and M-core = 2.4 +/- 0.3 M-circle dot] and Orion B [R = 0.16 pc, N(H-2) (3.8 +/- 0.4) x 10(23) cm(-2), n(H-2) = (15.6 +/- 1.8) x 10(5) cm(-3) , and M-core = 2.7 +/- 0.3 M-circle dot] clouds. These core properties in the A Orionis cloud can be attributed to the photodissociation and external heating by the nearby H rr region, which may prevent the PGCCs from forming gravitationally bound structures and eventually disperse them. These results support the idea of negative stellar feedback on core formation.</P>

        Surgical Management and Outcome of Tethered Cord Syndrome in School-Aged Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults

        Objective : The adolescent presentation of tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is well-recognized, but continues to pose significant diagnostic and management controversies. The authors conducted a retrospective study of clinical outcomes after surgical intervention in 24 school-aged children, adolescents, and young adults with TCS. Methods : All 83 patients with a lipomyelomeningocele (LMMC) underwent untethering surgery for caudal cord tethering between 1987 and 2007. The clinical charts and follow-up data were reviewed. Of these patients, 24 school-aged children, adolescents, and young adults with TCS were studied with respect to the clinical, radiologic, pathologic features, and surgical outcomes. Results : Untethering procedures were performed in 24 patients (age range, 7-25 years) for TCS of various origins (lipoma, lipomyelomeningocele, and tight filum terminale). Specific circumstances involving additional tugging of the already tight conus, and direct trauma to the back precipitated the onset of symptom in 50% of the patients. Diffuse and non-dermatomal leg pain, often referred to the anorectal region, was the most common presenting symptom. Progressive sensorimotor deficits in the lower extremities, as well as bladder and bowel dysfunction, were also common findings, but progressive foot and spinal deformities were noted less frequently. The most common tethered lesions were intradural lipomas, thickened filum and fibrous band adhesions into the placode sac. The surgical outcome was gratifying in relation to pain and motor weakness, but disappointing with respect to resolution of bowel and bladder dysfunction. Of the 24 patients with TCS, pre-operative deficits improved after surgery in 14 (58.3%). remained stable in 8 (33.4%). and worsened in 2 (8.3%). Conclusion : The pathologic lesions of tethered cord syndrome in school-aged children, adolescents, and young adults, are mostly intradural lipomas and tight filum. It is suggested that the degree of cord traction results in neurologic dysfunction in late life due to abnormal tension, aggravated by trauma or repeated tugging of the conus during exercise. Early diagnosis and adequate surgical release might be the keys to the successful outcome in school-aged children, adolescents, and young adults with TCS.

        초등학교 2학년 학생들이 과학학습 상황에서 보이는 행동 특성; 과학학습 동기체계에 관한 현상학적 연구

        이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 2학년 학생들의 SLBIS/ BAS(과학학습 행동억제체계/행동활성화 체계)에 따른 과학학습 상황에서의 행동특성을 조사하는 것이 다. 연구를 위해 초등학교 2학년 1학급에서 20명을 추출하여 연구를 시행하였다. 연구는 질적 연구 방법 중의 하나인 현상학적인 연구 방법을 따랐다. 연구를 통해 조사된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, SL-BIS에 민 감한 학생들은 과학학습 상황에서``실험 결과에 대한 부정적 반응``,`` 실험 활동에 소극적임``,`` 침묵``,`` 단순 반복 질문``과 같은 행동 특성을 보였다. 둘째, SLBAS에 민감한 학생들은``실험 결과에 대한 긍정적 반 응``,`` 실험에 대한 도전 정신``,`` 학습지 작성에 열심``, ``구체적 질문을 많이 함``,`` 상호 보완적 모둠 실험 선호``와 같은 행동 특성을 보였다. 이 연구를 통해 제한 적이기는 하나 SL-BIS/BAS의 검사결과가 초등학교 2학년 학생들의 과학학습 상황에서의 행동특성을 예측할 수 있다는 점을 질적 연구를 통해 알 수 있었다. The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavioral characteristics of elementary second graders depending on SL-BIS/BAS (Behavioral Inhibition/Activation System about Science Learning) in science learning situation. For this study, 20 second grade students participated. This study followed a phenomenological research method, a form of qualitative research. As the results show, students who have a sensitive motivation system to SL-BIS directly expressed their disappointment of the result and easily get distracted in class when they failed in science learning activity. They participated in group work passively, for example, they interacted less in the group or avoided answering questions. Even though the students have a lot of questions that were usually simple, empty or repetitive words, They have within themselves the good will of challenging difficult experiment that was their only expression of passive will, The students have a tendency to be dependent on their friends in an experiment, making it unlikely that they preferred group work from the beginning. Otherwise, students who have sensitive motivation system to SL-BAS endured science learning activity to the end regardless of the negative result. In particular, they were enthusiastically working on home-school materials. When the students succeeded in the experiment, they responded to the cheers and openly expressed their feeling. They were satisfied with their achievement. The students have more desire for in-depth activity. Their questions were more progressive, specific and expanded. They showed a strong desire to challenge difficult experiment and preferred to interact with their group members to help each other. Based on the results, they were limited but we could find that the behavioral characteristics of second grade students in science learning situations can be predicted with a score of SL-BIS/BAS t.

        Distribution of trkA in cerebral cortex and diencephalon of the mongolian gerbil after birth

        TrkA is essential components of the high-affinity NGF receptor necessary to mediate biological effects of the neurotrophins NGF. Here we report on the expression of trkA in the cerebral cortex and diencephalon of mongolian gerbils during postnatal development. The expression of trkA was identified by immunohistochemical method. In parietal cortex and piriform cortex, higher levels of trkA-IR (immunoreactivity) were detected at 3 days postnatal (P3) and at P9. Although trkA was not expressed till P3 in the parietal cortex, it was detectable at birth in the piriform cortex. Several regions, such as Layers I, IV & VI, did not show much expression. Layer I showed especially weak labeling. In the hippocampus, thalamus, and hypothalamus, higher levels of trkA-IR were detected at P6 and P12 than earlier days. But trkA was not expressed at birth in the hippocampus, at P3 in the reticular thalamic nucleus, or neonatally in the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus. This data shows that expression of trkA is developmentally regulated and suggests that high affinity neurotrophin-receptors mediate a transient response to neurotrophines in the cerebral cortex and diencephalon during mongolian gerbil brain ontogeny.

        Most of previous scheduling policies for the readers-writers problem have a problem that they show poor performance in one of throughput or response time because they are biased to one class of readers and writers. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic scheduling policy, Counter-based Adaptive Priority(CAP) to overcome the performance problem. The CAP policy is based on a dynamic combination of writer-weighting for non-concurrent writers and reader-aging for small waiting readers. CAP does not starve readers or writers and gives better performance than FCFS in both throughput and response time. To show the effectiveness of CAP, we present its semaphore-based solution. and compare the performance of CAP with that of previous policies through the event-driven simulation.

        CNT/ABS/SAN계의 분산성에 미치는 MWNT Wrapping 전처리 효과

        탄소나노튜브는 좋은 전기 기계적 및 열적 특성을 가진 복합 재료 분야에서 가장 이상적인 나노 충전재이다. 따라서 탄소나노튜브의 복합 재료는 전도성 재료, 고강도를 가지면서 가벼운 무게를 가지는 재료에 이용된다. 탄소나노튜브 복합재료의 주요 문제점은 탄소나노튜브의 나쁜 분산에 있다. 본 연구에서는 다중벽 탄소나노튜브(MWNT)를 물리적 방법으로 전처리하였다. 전처리 후, 고분자/MWNT nanocomposites는 용해 공정에 의해 분산되었다. 물리적 방법은 고 분자 wrapping 방법에 의해 준비되었다. ABS/MWNT 복합 재료의 기계적 및 전기적 특성을 SAN과 함께 wrapping된 MWNT와 미처리된 MWNT와 혼합된 ABS의 속성을 비교하여 연구하였다. MWNT가 wrapping된 복합체의 인장강도는 증가하였으나 충격강도는 감소한 수치를 보였다. 전기적 물성의 향상에는 미처리시료와 비교해 볼 때 큰 효과가 없었다. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are considered as one of ideal nano-fillers in the field of composites with their excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Therefore CNT composites are increasingly used in fabricating conductive materials, structural materials with high strength and low weight, and multifunctional materials. The main problem of the CNT composites is difficulty in the dispersion of CNT in the polymer matrix. In this study multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were pretreated by the physical process utilizing a wrapping method. After the pretreatment polymer/MWNT nanocomposites were prepared by melt processing. The effect of functionalization MWNT by wrapping with styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) on the mechanical and electrical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene resin (ABS)/MWNT composites was studied by comparing the properties of ABS mixed with the neat MWNT. Electrical and mechanical properties of ABS/MWNT nanocomposites were studied as a function of the functionalization and content of MWNT. The tensile strength of the ABS/MWNT nanocomposites increased, but the impact strength decreased. The polymer wrapping in ABS system has little effect on the improvement of electrical properties.
