External Application of Herbal Medicines for Acne Vulgaris: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis

Aim of the study: The objective of this systematic review is to critically evaluate the evidence of the effectiveness and safety of external application of herbal medicines (EAHM) for acne vurgalis (AV). Methods: English, Chinese and Korean language databases were searched up to May 2018. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that reported the effects of EAHM for AV were included and analysed. Results: A total of 10 randomized trials with 656 AV patients were identified. A meta-analysis of two RCTs indicated that EAHM had a significant effect on improving primary outcome 'global assessment' compared with placebo (mean difference (MD) = -2.62, confidence interval (CI) = -4.84 to -0.40, p = 0.02). Furthermore, data extracted from two RCTs showed that EAHM significantly reduce primary outcome 'inflammatory lesion count of acne' (MD = -1.25, CI = -1.68 to -0.83, p < 0.00001) and 'non-inflammatory lesion count of acne' (MD = -1.32, CI = -1.75 to -0.90, p < 0.00001). No significant difference was observed between groups in secondary outcome 'sebum of skin' (MD = -0.21, CI = -0.53 to 0.11, p = 0.20) and 'patient-reported changes in symptom' (relative risk (RR) = 2.56, CI = 0.43 to 15.22, p = 0.30). No severe adverse events (AEs) were found and no treatment was stopped due to AEs of EAHM. Conclusions: EAHM seems to have affirmative effects, but quality of evidence, and non-standardized use of EAHM make our conclusion weak. Our suggestion is rigorously designed RCTs and standardization of EAHM are required in the future.

A capillary GC-MS analysis revealed that two stereoisomers of castasterone are contained in immature seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris. 400 MHz proton NMR analysis of the stereoisomers determined they are A ring epimers of castasterone, 3-epicastasterone and 2,3-diepicastasterone. In rice lamina inclination assay, 3-epicastasterone and 2,3-diepicastasterone showed reduced biological activity than that of castasterone. Together with our previous finding that 2-epicastasterone exhibits a less biological activity than CS, this result indicates that epimerization of hydroxyl at C-2 or/and C-3 is/are inactive processes to reduce biological activity of CS after exerting as a bioactive brassinosteroid in P. vulgaris.

Purpose: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) may serve as a general marker for systemic inflammation in septic and nonseptic acute critical illness. Additionally, our previous experiment has demonstrated that immunosuppressant Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) lowered MIF levels and inhibited T-cells proliferation when compared to control levels. The addition of hypertonic saline (HTS) increased MIF production as compared with PGE2-stimulated T-cells in concordance with restore PGE2-suppressed T-cells proliferation. Generally, HTS has been well known for its anti-inflammatory effect so far. Therefore, the experiments were conducted to evaluate MIF after stimulating lipopolysaccharide (LPS) either in the presence or absence of HTS in monocyte, in response to early phase injury. Methods: Human acute monocytic leukemic cell line (THP-1) cells were cultured in RPMI media, to a final concentration of 1 × 106 cells/mL. The effect of HTS on LPS-induced MIF was evaluated in monocyte with 1 μg/mL LPS. HTS at 10, 20 or 40 mmol/L above isotonicity was added. MIF concentrations of the supernatant were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and cell lysates were used for Western blots analysis to determine the MIF expression. Results: MIF concentrations in the cell supernatant increased in LPS-induced cells compared to control cells. Also, levels of MIF protein expression were higher in LPS stimulating cells. However, the addition of HTS to LPS stimulated cell restored MIF concentrations and MIF expression. Conclusion: The role of HTS in maintaining physiological balance in human beings, at least in part, should be mediated through the MIF pathway.

본 연구는 무지개송어 양식 산업의 생산성 향상을 위해 전 암컷 무지개송어 대량생산을 위한 일환으로 성호르몬에 의한 생리학적 성전환과 자성발생 2배체어를 유도하였다. 생리학적으로 성전환된 수컷을 만들기 위하여 부화 후 첫 먹이를 먹는 시기에 웅성호르몬인 17 alpha-methyltestosterone (MT) 5 ㎎을 사료에 흡착시켜 사육수온 13℃에서 적산수온 800℃까지 처리한 결과 96.7%의 수컷 유도율을 보였다. 또한 정상 수컷 정액을 이용하여 수정 10분 후 28oC에서 20분간 고온 처리하여 61.7%의 자성발생 2배체가 유도되었다. This study was conducted to increase the efficiency of farming practice in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, by sex reversal and chromosome-set manipulation techniques. To obtain phenotypic males, hormonal sex reversal was carried out using an exogenous hormone treatment method. 5 ㎎ of 17 alpha-methyltestosterone per kg diet was supplied for 82 days after first feeding at 10℃ and 13℃. More than 93% of the male population was produced by this method and growth of hormone-treated fish at 13℃ was faster than that of untreated bi-sexual groups. Induced diploid gynogenesis was carried out using artificial insemination of UV-irradiated sperm into haploid eggs. Based on the appearance of the rate of haploid syndrome and survival of embryo, a UV ray dose of at least 3,600 erg/㎠ was required to inactivate rainbow trout sperm genetically. Haploid embryos were restored to diploid by blocking the extrusion of the second polar body using heat shock treatment at 28℃ for 20 min, 10 min post insemination. Gynogenetic diploid sex ratios were confirmed after maturation of the fish erythrocyte measurements and chromosome counts.
Hedgehog signaling pathway as a potential target in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer

<P>The sonic hedgehog signaling pathway is critical for cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and organ development during embryogenesis. Aberrant activation of the sonic hedgehog pathway has been associated with a variety of human cancers. Currently, there is no target molecular drug that clinically affects sonic hedgehog activation in patients with gastric cancer. In this review, we will focus on the current clinical treatment options for advanced gastric cancer and discuss the sonic hedgehog signaling pathway. We also review our understanding of the role of sonic hedgehog signaling in advanced gastric cancer progression. Finally, we will describe current known molecular pathways that crosstalk with the sonic hedgehog pathway in cancer stem cells.</P>
