      • Cognitive-enhancing and antioxidant activities of iridoid glycosides from Scrophularia buergeriana in scopolamine-treated mice

        The cognitive-enhancing activities of E-harpagoside and 8-O-E-p-methoxycinnamoylharpagide (MCA-Hg) isolated from Scrophularia buergeriana were evaluated in scopolamine-induced amnesic mice by the Morris water maze and by passive avoidance tests. E-harpagoside and MCA-Hg significantly improved the impairment of reference memory induced by scopolamine in the Morris water maze test. The mean escape latency, the mean path length and swimming movement were also improved by both compounds. In passive avoidance test, E-harpagoside and MCA-Hg (2 mg/kg body weight, p.o.) significantly ameliorated scopolamine-induced amnesia by as much as 70% of the level found in normal control mice. Donepezil, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and the most widely used drug for AD treatment was employed as a positive control. The activity of acetylcholinesterase was inhibited significantly by E-harpagoside or MCA-Hg within the cortex and hippocampus to a level similar to that observed in mice treated with donepezil (2 mg/kg body weight, p.o.). Moreover, treatment with E-harpagoside or MCA-Hg to scopolamine-induced amnesic mice significantly decreased TBARS level which was accompanied by an increase in the activities or contents of glutathione reductase, SOD and reduced GSH. We believe these data demonstrate that E-harpagoside or MCA-Hg exerted potent cognitive-enhancing activity through both anti-acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant mechanisms.

      • 탄탈륨 산화물 박막의 전기화학적 성장과 광전기화학적 응용

        Thin films of tantalum oxide (Ta₂O_5) were formed electrochemically on tantalum electrode in several electrolytes at different applied voltages. The particle and pore sizes of oxide films were various depending upon the electrolytes. The thickness and structure of electrochemically grown oxides were examined using X -ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), SEM, photoluminescence (PL), electroluminescence (EL) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). EL emissions of rare earth metal Tb³+ and organic Ru(bpy)₃²+ incorporated-Ta/Ta₂O_5 electrodes in aqueous solutions were observed. Since new EL emission energies are smaller than the band gap of 4.1 eV of Ta₂O_5, the resulting omissions are considered to be generated from surface states at the oxide band gap region. Incorporated inorganic and organic species are supposed to act as the luminescence centers for free electrons and holes. Since the emission spectra depend upon the incorporated chemical species and their concentrations, metal oxide films can be used for phosphor layers and analytical sensing probes by the controlled introduction of the label materials to produce surface states.

        This paper begin a new approach in the water-gate controller using radio communication. The dissertation is on the controllable device development of water-gate in the remote distance from water-gate trough the transceiver by radio communication. The proposed water-gate control device is simple in structure, an suitable for implementation of water-gate control in the remote distance. The remote controller water-gate device inspected the up and down motion of water-gate through the LCD displayer, so that it was very safety driving about the surroundings information, over loading and position of water-gate, and so on.

      • 커피찌꺼기를 이용한 활성탄의 제조 및 흡착특성

        The exhausted coffee is a kind of biomass resources. In this study Activated carbon was prepared from ex.hausted coffee by activation with potassium Hydroxide. Processes of this study were as following : rosting step and carbonizaton step and chemical activation step. The rostiong step was canied out at more than 300 °C. The carbonization and activation step was simultaneously caπied out at 500-700°C. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feature and usability of activated cofee char through SEM photographs, Iodine absorbability, TGA analysis, and technical analysis. For the activated carbon produced under optimal condition, iodine adsorptivity was 774mg/g, specific surface area was foπned well. In case of making activated carbon using exhausted coffee, it is considered that it has value enough as an activated carbon.

      • The procyanidin trimer C1 induces macrophage activation via NF-κB and MAPK pathways, leading to Th1 polarization in murine splenocytes

        Numerous studies have shown various relationships between foods with a high nutritional value and a robust immune response, particularly studies that have focused on host protection and cytokine networks. This study aimed to clarify the role played by the procyanidin trimer C1 in innate and adaptive immunity. Procyanidin C1 did not exert cytotoxicity at concentrations ranging from 7.8 to 62.5μg/ml in macrophage cells; therefore, concentration of 62.5μg/ml was used as the maximum dose of procyanidin C1 throughout subsequent experiments. Procyanidin C1 enhanced inducible nitric oxide synthase-mediated nitric oxide production in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, procyanidin C1 functionally induced macrophage activation by augmenting the expression of cell surface molecules (CD80, CD86, and MHC II) and proinflammatory cytokine production (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6) via activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), e.g., p38, ERK, and JNK and nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathways. Interestingly, procyanidin C1 effectively polarized T helper type 1 (Th1) by secreting Th1-mediated cytokines (interferon-γ, IL-12p70, and IL-2) and inducing splenocyte proliferation, indicating that procyanidin C1 contributes to Th1 polarization of the immune response. Accordingly, these findings confirms that the procyanidin C1 induces macrophage activation via NF-κB and MAPK pathways, leading to Th1 polarization in murine splenocytes, which suggests that procyanidin C1 regulates innate and adaptive immunity by macrophage activation and Th1 polarization.

        The climacteric has been one process which woman and man have to pass through. In West, the menopause which is one of woman climacteric syndromes is regarded to be generated from hormone deficiency, while in East it has been recognized as the exhaustion of 'Cheongae' and therefore as a natural symptom. If menstruation appears when menopause has to arise, it is in Oriental medicine recognized as a disease and an intensive cure is required. Of symptoms related to menopause in Oriental medicine, representave ones are Kyungsookwagibuji (continual menstruation after the period of menopause has already passed; that is late menopause), Kyungdanhuburae (reproduced menstruation after a long time when it paused) and Nyeonminokyungsudan (ceased menstruation before the period of menopause; that is early menopause). Kyungsookwagibuji is recognized to be a disease which requires cure except the case of blood remainder. Kyungdanhuburae, as well, is recognized to be a symptom of intermittent bleeding before perfectly reaching menopause and it requires an intensive cure in case of menstuation reproduced after several years when menstruation ceased. Nyeonminokyungsudan is originated from endocrine deficiency.

        가스분무 및 분무성형법에 의한 Al-Pb 베아링 제조에 관한 연구 (1)

        Spray Forming technology has been developed at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Univ. of Ulsan, for the fabrication of tube, billet and plate of Al-12%Pb alloys. Spray Forming Process involves atomizing a stream of molten metals and collecting the droplets on a substrate before they have solidified, The effects of geometry(orifice diameter and tip design) and position of the metal delivery orifice in atomization device on the pressure characteristics at the tip of orifice have been studied. Mathematical model has been developed to predict the velocity and temperature profiles of the droplets as a function of their flight distances. Microstructural characteristics of Al-12%Pb hyper-monotectic alloys by spray forming process were examined. Dense (~99. 4%) material with fine-grained equiaxed microstructure was spray-formed using nitrogen as the atomizing gas. It was found that lead(Pb) particles existing in the microstructure were homogeneously distributed in the aluminium matrix and along the grain boundaries. The shape of lead particle were approximately spherical and the mean particle size was about 3-4㎛.

        Chickens fed under the same conditions were divided 4 groups (each group 20 hens), One group (D) was used as control (only standard diet) Other three groups (A.B.C) were given every day standard diet with ginseng extract (small, medium and large doses as part Ⅰ) After 140 days each group(6-12 hens) were irradiated with ??-Ray(900r) (whole body) and determined the contents of tissue(liver, intestine) lipid (cholesterol, phospholipid, triglyceride) and serum lipid after 24 hrs. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The contents of total cholesterol and phospholipid of liver, intestine and serum showed no significant difference between each groups. 2. The contents of triglyceride of liver, intestine and serum increased in the irradiated group, because the increased rate of group A.B.C was smaller than group E. 3. The effects of ginseng extract on lipid contents of irradiated chickens showed some difference by administered doses of ginseng.

        The serum lipid contents, i.e. total cholesterol, phospholipids and triglycerides were determining at various time intervals after allowing inhalation of carbon tetrachloride to control rabbits and those administered Ginseng for 8 weeks. At the same time, comparison was made between the control and Ginseng-fed animals in regard to the liver lipids determined. 1) The elevation of serum total cholesterol and triglyceride contents were less marked in Ginseng-fed than in the control. 2) Although no marked change was observed in serum phospholipid contents in the control at Ginseng-fed, a slight increase was noted in the latter. 3) The lipids in the liver tissue were generally elevated in both control and Ginseng fed, the elevation being less marked in the Ginseng-fed animals.

        The levels of hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 in preimplantation rats were determined 1) The activities of the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 associated with the events leading to implantation were gradually increased in preimplantation rats. 2) The level of the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 was peak, 2.65 nmoles/mg protein, on day 4 in normal preimplantation rat. 3) The activity of the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 was decreased in ovariectomized rat than normal rat. 4) The hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 level in ovariectomized rat was peak, 2.39 nmoles/mg protein, on day 5. 5) We observed the fact thar the activity of microsomal P-450 was delayed in ovariectomized rat. 6) We confirmed the fact that the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 level was affected by steroid hormone.
