<P>This paper deals with the effect of door width on the passenger flow time on Korean urban railways using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and regression analysis. All regression coefficients are statistically significant in both analyses. The ANCOVA results show that increasing the door width can be quite useful in reducing passenger flow time. Regression analysis, which controls for other independent variables, also shows a clear relationship between door width and passenger flow time. In an additional regression model, we consider the interaction between door width and the number of boarding passengers. This paper also compares flow times estimated through two different methods: laboratory experiments and live railway observation, and finds no significant difference between the two approaches.</P>
The Effect of the Introduction of the Express Highspeed Railway in Korea

Purpose – In today's era of carbon neutrality, railways need to find ways to improve usability and efficiency. Accordingly, this study examines the effect of introducing express highspeed railways into the Korean public transportation system and suggests some practical guidelines. One concern in the Korea railway sector is that low scheduled speeds contrast with the highspeed railway system design. Research design, data, and methodology – Current literature and foreign cases are analyzed. Subsequently, using data from the Korean Railroad Research Institute, a benefit analysis is conducted based on expanded track capacity and the saving of time owing to the introduction of the express highspeed railway. Result – The express highspeed railway system is expected to increase the number of train lines from 262 to 348 and the scheduled speed from 168.3km/h to 192.2km/h. Considering reduced time value, the economic effect is about 80 million won per year. Conclusion – The findings suggest that the express highspeed railway is a promising option to improve efficiency and increase customer utility. This study contributes to the literature by initiating a discussion on the express system in Korea; practically, it offers railway operators guidelines for improving highspeed railway system efficiency that can be transformed into a variety of marketing options.

This paper aims to establish a guideline for ridership capacity of different rail vehicles for military passengers. Previous guideline is limited only to a Mungungwha(hauled by diesel locomotive) vehicle, but this paper expands the limitation to ITX- Saemaeul and urban rail vehicles classified to Electric Motivated Unit(EMU). The guideline considers both with and without personal armor conditions, and based on repetitive ridership experiments. The experiments are designed under considerations of the required number of soldiers for the sample spaces of the different rail vehicles. Moreover, the design tries to establish a concept of optimal capacity additionally to a traditional limiting ridership capacity. In order to do this, ridership comfort is questioned to participant soldiers repetitively over the experiments and all answers of them are surveyed as a results of it. The results of the experiments presented by this paper can be referenced to establish a new guideline on ridership capacity for Korean army.
