In this paper, the activity of Japanese researchers relating multibody dynamics is introduced. The author stayed at the CCR(Center for Collaborative Research) in the university of Tokyo as a visiting scholar during December 10, 2003 to March 9, 2004. The information obtained from several universities (University of Tokyo, Sophia university, Nihon university, Tsukuba university), several industries and research institutes (JR Central in Nagoya, Toyota Research Center in Nagoya., Subway department in Tokyo, and JARI at Tsukuba), several research groups (JSCM, JSME, JSAE) was summarized with several photos. Professor Yoshihiro Suda's laboratory at the university of Tokyo, professor Yoshiaki Terumichi's laboratory at the Sophia university, and professor lchiro Kageyama's laboratory at the Nihon university are introduced.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, a motile and rod Gram-negative bacterium, is the causative agent of melioidosis. The bacterium is an intracellular pathogen and that motility is generally crucial for their survival in a natural environment and for systemic infection inside a host. We report here a role of B. pseudomallei polyphosphate kinase in virulence, such as an oxidative stress response, motilities and biofilm formation. The polyphosphate kinase (ppk) mutant is susceptible to hydrogen peroxide in an oxidative stress condition,unable to perform swimming, swarming motilities, and has lower density biofilm forming capacity than the wild-type strain. We also demonstrated that both polyphosphate kinase and motile flagella are essential and independently involved in biofilm formation. The B. pseudomallei flagellin (fliC) mutant and B. mallei, a nonmotile species, are shown to produce higher density biofilm formation than the ppk mutant, but less than wild type B. pseudomallei.

Background: Experiments with small electrochemical apparatus were previously carried out for detecting low-energy neutrinos under irradiation of reactor neutrinos and under natural neutrino environment. The experimental result indicated that the output current of reactor-neutrino irradiated detector was appreciably larger than that of natural environmental one. Usual interaction cross-sections of neutrinos are quite small, so that they do not explain the experimental result at all. Materials and Methods: To understand the experimental data, we propose that some biological products may generate AV-type scalar field B0, leading to a large interaction cross-section. The output current generation is ascribed to an electrochemical process that may be assisted by weak interaction phenomena. Dissolved oxygen concentrations in the detector solution were measured in this study, for the purpose of understanding the mechanism of the detector output current generation. Results and Discussion: It was found that the time evolution of experimental output current was mostly reproduced in simulation calculation on the basis of the measured dissolved oxygen concentration. Conclusion: We mostly explained the variation of experimental data by using the electrochemical half-cell analysis model based on the DO concentration that is consistent to the experiment.
Fluorinated Metal Hydrides for the Catalytic Hydrolysis of Metal - Hydrogen Complexes

This paper is related to the hydrogen storage (H-storage) system composed of an alkaline solution that contains metal-hydrogen complex ions. The BH₄^--complex ions stabilized when it is dissolved in aqueous KOH or NaOH to form homogeneous solutions. However, it is necessary to apply an appropriate catalyst for a high rate generation of hydrogen under atmospheric pressure and temperature conditions. The authors intended to develop catalysts suitable for the hydrolysis of BH₄^--complex ion solutions and found that Mg₂Ni exhibits excellent catalytic functions in the hydrolysis, in particular, after the fluorination treatment (F-treatment). In this work, the effects of F-treatment on the rates of hydrolysis were evaluated between the hydrided and unhydrided Mg₂Ni. No hydrogenation in addition to F-treatment is required in view of hydrolysis kinetics and cost-effectiveness.
Frequency dependence of AC conductivities of KNbVO single crystals

AC conductivity of KNbVO(χ=0, 0.01) was measured at temperatures from 30℃ to 430℃ in the frequency range from 10㎐ to 10㎒. Below 1㎒, the AC conductivity σ(ω) is proportional to ω. The frequency exponent s is a decreasing function of temperature and tends to unity at low temperatures. Frequency dependence of σ and s in both samples is reasonably interpreted by the correlated barrier hopping model. Arrhenius plotting of σ(T) yielded a curved line and from these results the activation energies were estimated to be 1.02eV(for pure KNbO₃), and 0.8 eV (for KNbVO) respectively.
Effectiveness of Minimal Quantity Lubrication in Machining Processes

A minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) machining is able to achieve both functions of cooling and lubrication with an extremely low quantity of a cutting fluid and a large amount of air blow. Using a biodegradable ester oil, turning tests were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the MQL system. It was found that the performance of MQL cutting was equivalent to, or better than, that of conventional cutting, because the MQL system tends to prevent the heat damage of the tool tip and, if an effective lubricant such as a particular polyol ester is applied to the system, it can avoid the extensive transfer of workpiece materials on to the tool surface.
