The silent face of language anxiety: A case study of Korean elementary school students in US schools
차혜경,Eleni Pappamihiel,Stephanie Al Otaiba 한국초등영어교육학회 2011 초등영어교육 Vol.17 No.3
This article reviews the results of a case study that focused on the English language anxiety of 5 Korean Elementary school ESL (English as a Second Language) students. In this study findings confirmed that elementary school students can suffer from language anxiety as do other, older, English language learners. It was also found that language anxiety is more prevalent in the mainstream classroom than in the ESL classroom. In addition, participants exhibited signs of disengagement from academic activities in the mainstream classroom even at relatively low language anxiety levels. Conclusions drawn from this study indicate that teachers should address issues of anxiety even when it is not explicitly observable to them. Finally, the article explores some of the strategies to address the issues of language anxiety in both ESL classes and mainstream classes.
