Isotropic coal tar pitch-based carbon fibers: Effect of nitric acid towards elimination of air-stabilization step

        Sonu Rani,Khushboo Kumari,Pankaj Kumar,Shiv Prakash,Kriti Tyagi,Sanjay R. Dhakate,Saroj Kumari 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.127 No.-

The remarkable properties exhibited by carbon fibers have generated considerable interest in seekingalternative approaches to replace time-consuming, energy-intensive, and multi-step procedures for theirsynthesis. Among the various stages involved in carbon fiber synthesis, the stabilization step plays a crucialrole as it necessitates an extended duration to transform thermoplastic pitch-fibers into thermosettingfibers, thus preventing them from melting during high-temperature treatments. In this study, isotropic coal tar pitch (ICTP) was transformed into pitch fibers through melt-spinning process and subsequentlysubjected to chemical treatment for stabilization using varying concentrations (ranging from5% to 50% v/v) of aqueous nitric acid (HNO3) solutions. The objective was to determine the optimal concentrationfor effective stabilization. Consequently, this research eliminates the conventional, timeconsumingair-stabilization process by treating the pitch fibers with nitric acid prior to carbonization. To produce carbon fibers, all chemically stabilized pitch fibers were directly carbonized at 1000 C. Comprehensive characterizations including Rheology, Elemental analysis, FTIR, TGA, FE-SEM, XRD,Raman, and XPS were conducted to investigate the chemical and structural transformations occurringduring the fiber processing. It was observed that aqueous nitric acid solutions ranging from 15% to30% (v/v) exhibited superior structural, morphological, and mechanical properties compared to otherconcentrations of HNO3.

      • How Compliant are Tobacco Vendors to India's Tobacco Control Legislation on Ban of Advertisments at Point of Sale? A Three Jurisdictions Review

Goel, Sonu,Kumar, Ravinder,Lal, Pranay,Tripathi, J.P.,Singh, Rana J.,Rathinam, Arul,Christian, Anant Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.24

Background: Section 5 of India's tobacco control legislation "Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003"comprehensively prohibits all kinds of tobacco advertisement, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS), but permits advertisments at the point-of-sale (POS) under certain conditions. This provision has been exploited by the tobacco companies to promote their products. Objective: To measure compliance with the provisions of Section 5 of Indian tobacco control legislation (COTPA, 2003) at point of sale. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey using an observation checklist was conducted in 1860 POS across three jurisdictions (Chennai city, District Vadodara and District Mohali) in India. Results: The most common mode of advertisement of tobacco products was product showcasing (51.1%), followed by dangles (49.6%), stickers (33.8%) and boards (27.1%). More than one fourth of POS were found violating legal provisions for displaying advertisement boards in one or other forms (oversized, extended to full body lenth of POS, displayed brandname/packshot and promotional messages). Advertisement boards (16.3%) without health warnings were also found and wherever found, more than 90% health warning were not as per the specification in respect to size, font and background color. Conclusions: Point of sale advertising is aggressively used by the tobacco industry to promote their products. There is an urgent need of effective implementation of a comprehensive ban on tobacco product advertisement, promotion and sponsorship at point of sale.

RSM Approach to Optimize an Engine Performance Combustion and Emissions at Part Load through Cylinder Deactivation

Ram Sonu,YADAVRAJ KUMAR,Singh Indraj 한국자동차공학회 2023 International journal of automotive technology Vol.24 No.6

This article compares engine performance, combustion, and emissions at part-load in cylinder deactivation (CD) mode versus the traditional spark ignition mode. This comparison demonstrates the applicability of cylinder deactivation for a compact 3-cylinder engine. Experiments have been performed on a multi-point fuel injection engine having a 1000 cc displacement and equipped with an open engine control unit. A response surface approach has been applied to design experiments and parametric engine optimization. The analysis of variance test indicates that the load is the input factor that impacts the deactivation mode most. At 3500 RPM and 45 N∙m load, the engine performs best in CD mode, with BSFC, BTE, CP, HRR, and UHC values of 332.805 g/kW-hr, 25.26 %, 52.51 bar, 43.24 J, and 10.38 ppm, respectively. The validation test results for CD mode show that the percentage error for the BSFC, BTE, CP, HRR, and UHC responses was found to be 2.86, 2.91, 3.01, 3.47, and 3.97, respectively, within the acceptable range. As compared to SI mode, the current analysis has discovered a considerable decrease in BSFC (11.47 %), an improvement in BTE (12.25 %), a higher CP (80.65 %), a greater HRR (91.74 %), and a decrease in UHC (95.48 %).

Aldose Reductase: a cause and a potential target for the treatment of diabetic complications

        Sapna Thakur,Sonu Kumar Gupta,Villayat Ali,Priyanka Singh,Malkhey Verma 대한약학회 2021 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.44 No.7

Diabetes mellitus, a disorder of metabolism, results in the elevation of glucose level in the blood. In thishyperglycaemic condition, aldose reductase overexpressesand leads to further complications of diabetes through thepolyol pathway. Glucose metabolism-related disorders arethe accumulation of sorbitol, overproduction of NADH andfructose, reduction in NAD + , and excessive NADPH usage, leading to diabetic pathogenesis and its complications suchas retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy. Accumulationof sorbitol results in the alteration of osmotic pressureand leads to osmotic stress. The overproduction of NADHcauses an increase in reactive oxygen species productionwhich leads to oxidative stress. The overproduction of fructosecauses cell death and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Apart from these disorders, many other complications havealso been discussed in the literature. Therefore, the articleoverviews the aldose reductase as the causative agent and apotential target for the treatment of diabetic complications. So, aldose reductase inhibitors have gained much importanceworldwide right now. Several inhibitors, like derivativesof carboxylic acid, spirohydantoin, phenolic derivatives, etc. could prevent diabetic complications are discussedin this article.

Enhanced dielectric piezo-/ferro-/electric properties of dye doped sodium acid phthalate crystal

        Geeta Ray,Sonu Kumar,Nidhi Sinha,Binay Kumar 한국물리학회 2017 Current Applied Physics Vol.17 No.5

Pure and 0.1 mol% amaranth dye doped sodium acid phthalate (SAP) crystals were grown by slow evaporation technique. Doping of the dye resulted in light pink colored crystals without changing its morphology. PXRD revealed no extra peak as a result of doping. The dye doping altered Raman peak intensities due to the presence of organic functional groups. Doped crystals showed the enhanced dielectric constant value ~170. The dielectric constant showed very small variation with temperature, which is useful in high temperature dielectric and piezoelectric devices. The piezoelectric charge coefficient increased from 1 pC/N to 2 pC/N as a result of dye doping. Ferroelectric P-E loops for the grown crystals were traced at room temperature, which revealed the enhancement in polarization due to dye doping. The hardness parameters and elastic stiffness were found to decrease as a result of dye doping in SAP crystals.
