Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious trans-boundary viral disease caused by FMD virus, which causes huge economic losses. FMDV infects cloven hoofed (two-toed) mammals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and various wildlife species. To control the FMDV, it is necessary to understand the life cycle and the pathogenesis of FMDV in host. Especially, the protein-protein interaction between FMDV and host will help to understand the survival cycle of viruses in host cell and establish new therapeutic strategies. However, the computational approach for protein-protein interaction between FMDV and pig hosts have not been applied to studies of the onset mechanism of FMDV. In the present work, we have performed the prediction of the pig's proteins which interact with FMDV based on RNA-Seq data, protein sequence, and structure information. After identifying the virus-host interaction, we looked for meaningful pathways and anticipated changes in the host caused by infection with FMDV. A total of 78 proteins of pig were predicted as interacting with FMDV. The 156 interactions include 94 interactions predicted by sequence-based method and the 62 interactions predicted by structure-based method using domain information. The protein interaction network contained integrin as well as STYK1, VTCN1, IDO1, CDH3, SLA-DQB1, FER, and FGFR2 which were related to the up-regulation of inflammation and the down-regulation of cell adhesion and host defense systems such as macrophage and leukocytes. These results provide clues to the knowledge and mechanism of how FMDV affects the host cell.

BACKGROUND: 18F-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-NaF PET/CT) has been proven to be useful in identification of microcalcifications, which are stimulated by inflammation. Blood speckle imaging (BSI) is a new imaging technology used for tracking the flow of blood cells using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). We evaluated the relationship between turbulent flow identified by BSI and inflammatory activity of the aortic valve (AV) as indicated by the 18F-NaF uptake index in moderate aortic stenosis (AS) patients. METHODS: This study enrolled 18 moderate AS patients diagnosed within the past 6 months. BSI within the aortic root was acquired using long-axis view TEE. The duration of laminar flow and the turbulent flow area ratio were calculated by BSI to demonstrate the degree of turbulence. The maximum and mean standardized uptake values (SUVmax, SUVmean) and the total microcalcification burden (TMB) as measured by 18F-NaF PET/CT were used to demonstrate the degree of inflammatory activity in the AV region. RESULTS: The mean SUVmean, SUVmax, and TMB were 1.90 ± 0.79, 2.60 ± 0.98, and 4.20 ± 2.18 mL, respectively. The mean laminar flow period and the turbulent area ratio were 116.1 ± 61.5 msec and 0.48 ± 0.32. The correlation between SUVmax and turbulent flow area ratio showed the most positive and statistically significant correlation, with a Pearson’s correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.658 and a p-value of 0.014. CONCLUSIONS: The high degree of trans-aortic turbulence measured by BSI was correlated with severe AV inflammation.

Because glycosylation of aesculetin and its 6-glucoside, aesculin, enhances their biological activities and physicochemical properties, whole-cell biotransformation and enzymatic synthesis methodologies using Neisseria polysaccharea amylosucrase were compared to determine the optimal production method for glycoside derivatives. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis of reaction products revealed two glycosylated products (AGG1 and AGG2) when aesculin was used as an acceptor, and three products (AG1, AG2, and AG3) when using aesculetin. The whole-cell biotransformation production yields of the major transfer products for each acceptor (AGG1 and AG1) were 85% and 25%, respectively, compared with 68% and 14% for enzymatic synthesis. These results indicate that whole-cell biotransformation is more efficient than enzymatic synthesis for the production of glycoside derivatives.

The data in tables are accurate and rich in information, which facilitates the performance of information extraction and question answering (QA) tasks. TableQA, which is based on tables, solves problems by understanding the table structure and searching for answers to questions. In this paper, we introduce both novice and intermediate Korean TableQA tasks that involve deducing the answer to a question from structured tabular data and using it to build a question answering pair. To solve Korean TableQA tasks, we use S3-NET, which has shown a good performance in machine reading comprehension (MRC), and propose a method of converting structured tabular data into a record format suitable for MRC. Our experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms a baseline in both the novice task (exact match (EM) 96.48% and F1 97.06%) and intermediate task (EM 99.30% and F1 99.55%).

Bacterial extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been shown to regulate various pulmonary diseases, but their functions in asthma remain uncertain. To demonstrate the clinical significance of Micrococcus luteus-derived EVs (MlEVs) in asthma, we enrolled 45 asthmatic patients (20 patients with neutrophilic asthma [NA], 25 patients with eosinophilic asthma [EA]) and 40 healthy controls (HCs). When the prevalence of IgG1 and IgG4 specific to MlEVs was evaluated in serum by ELISA, lower levels of MlEV-specific IgG4 (but not IgG1) were noted in asthmatic patients than in HCs. Among asthmatic patients, significantly lower levels of MIEV-specific IgG4 were noted in patients with NA than in those with EA. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between serum MlEV-specific IgG4 levels and FEV1 (%) values. In asthmatic C57BL/6 mice, MlEVs significantly attenuated neutrophilic airway inflammation by reducing the production of IL-1β and IL-17 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid as well as the number of group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) in lung tissues. To clarify the functional mechanism of MlEVs in NA, the effect of MlEVs on airway epithelial cells (AECs) and immune cells was investigated ex vivo. According to microarray analysis, MlEVs upregulated hsa-miR-4517 expression in AECs. Moreover, this miRNA could suppress IL-1β production by monocytes, resulting in the inhibition of ILC3 activation and neutrophil recruitment. These findings suggest that MlEVs could be a novel therapeutic agent for managing unresolved NA by regulating miRNA expression in AECs.

일반적으로 노인에게 나타나는 퇴행성 질환으로 알려져 있는 완치 없는 병, 치매의 발병 연령대가 점점 낮아지고 있다. 이에 젊은 나이때부터 치매 예방을 위해 인지 저하 증상을 선별하고 관리하는 것에 대한 사회적 필요성이 높아지고 있다. 본 연구는 비교적 디지털 리터러시 수준이 높은 초로기 치매 연령대(45-65 세)의 인구가 스스로 본인의 인지력을 앱으로 선별할 수 있도록 초로기 치매 조기 선별을 위한 어플리케이션 ‘초록이를 제안한다. 이를 위해 유저 리서치, 테마 분석, 퍼소나, 브레인스토밍을 수행하였고 선행 내용을 바탕으로 실제 인터랙션이 담긴 시연용 프로토타이핑을 제작해 어플리케이션의 컨셉을 구체화했다. 본 연구를 통해 디지털 선별 검사 산업에서 디자인 사고를 적용하여 문제해결 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
Antioxidant and Cytotoxicity Effects of Luteolin

Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds that are ubiquitous in plants. They have been shown to possess a variety of biological activities, such as antioxidant and anticancer. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) lead to damages of cellular molecules and it is the one of various factors to induce cancer. The one of flavonoids, Luteolin, was found to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover luteolin showed protection on hamster lung fibroblast cells (V79-4 cell) damage induced by H₂O₂. And then it was investigated whether it may show cytotoxicity effect against various cancer cells by MTT. Luteolin at 10 ㎍/㎖ showed the cell viability of 63.2%, 34.7%, 18.4% and 71.4% against NCI-H460, HeLa, U937 and MCF-7, respectively. As a result, luteolin shows more sensitive to U937 cells among the tested cancer cell lines. In summary, luteolin has antioxidant and cytotoxicity effect on various cancer cell lines.
Study on Storytelling Contents Preference for Waterfront Area Construction

In this study, a present situation survey of users was done for the construction of waterfront area, and user preference was surveyed in applying new contents. For the survey, Shin stream and Susung pond, located at the center of Daegu city, and Palgeo stream, located on the outskirts of residential areas were selected. Through the result of the present situation survey, it was possible to identify the main user ages, facilities in use, and purposes, where the main user ages were at least 40s who primarily used for exercise and walking. The demands for new contents were found to have various requirements such as movies, educational space, diversification of exercise facilities, and festivals. Indicators such as location, age group, accessibility, and etc. could be set as indicators to be considered in developing waterfront areas to which storytelling is applied using the survey results

The antioxidant property of cultured mycelia of Phellinus baumii was investigated. The water-soluble extract isolated from these mycelia showed intracellular reactive oxygen species, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities. This radical scavenging activity of extract protected cell viability of Chinese hamster lung fibroblast (V79-4) cells exposed to H2O2. Furthermore, water extract reduced the apoptotic cells induced by H2O2, as demonstrated by the decreased number of sub G1 hypo-diploid cells and apoptotic body formation and it increased the activities of cellular antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase and catalase. Taken together, these findings suggest that mycelia of P. baumii exhibit antioxidant property. (Cancer Prev Res 11, 329-335, 2006)
