Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of oncology ward nurses toward cancer pain management and to find ways to improve the educational program for nurses. Method: A total of 209 nurses working at the oncology ward of three hospitals in Seoul and a Gyenggi Province. The survey instrument used was the 32-item scale for evaluating nurses knowledge and attitudes originally developed by McCaffery and Ferrell'(1990). that was by Kim'(1997). Result: In terms of the nurses knowledge of pain management. the result showed that the nurses scored an average of 67.8 out of 100 for phamacokinetics of opioids. 84.8 for classification of analgesics, 60.1 for pain assessment, and 70.7 for drug administration. 18.2% of the nurses hesitate to inject the narcotic agent because of concerns regarding the drug's potential side effects. there was significant difference in the knowledge of pain management according to the general characteristics of pain in terms of the nurses age(p=.001), position (p=.016). years of experiences(p=.002), experience of cancer pain education(p= .001). Conclusion: The also showed that nurses working at cancer ward lack knowledge. It is important to provide intensive education to nurses about cancer pain management.

The purpose of this study was to develop menus for daily intake of 25g soybean protein and to analyse nutrients of these foods. Analytical values were compared to the theoretical one using the food composition table and recommended dietary allowances for Koreans (7th revision). The results are as follows. 1. Soybean curd residue stew, Soybean curd, Kimchi saute, and hard boiled soybean and lotus root were selected for the menu for January, of which the content of soy bean protein(SBP) was 33.1g, soybean stew, soybean curd and soybean sprout saute, and Italian deep fried soybean curd were for February, of which the content of SBP was 35.0g. The content of SBP in soybean paste soup with soybean curd, fried soybean curd and fried soybean curd roll, the menu for March, was 24.9g. That of April were soybean curd gratin with soymilk, soybean curd and ham with garlic dressing and the content of SBP was 26.3g. That of May were soybean porridge, soybean flour cake with honey (Dasik), soybean sprout soup and the content of SBP was 26.7g. That of June were soymilk, pan-fried soybean curd, steamed soybean curd with chicken and the content of SBP was 28.4g. That of July were noodle with soymilk, mapatofu, soybean curd salad and the content of SBP was 24.7g. That of August were soybean sprout with mustard dressing, Tossed green pepper with raw soybean flour, Tofu and Kimchi stew, soybean curd steak and the content of SBP was 26.2g. That of September were Chinese cabbage soup with raw soybean flour, sweet and sour tofu and the content of SBP was 23.2g. That of Oct. were Fermented soybean stew, soybean pan cake and the content of SBP was 24.3g. That of November were not-pressed soybean curd casserole, pan-fried mashed soybean curd with egg, stir frying deep-fried soybean curd with vegetables and the content of SBP was 22.4g. That of December were soybean curd and mushroom casserole, fried soybean curd and vegetables, hard boiled soybean curd and the content of SBP was 28.9g. 2. The ratio of the analytical value over theoretical value (A/B%) of one serving in kcal, carbohydrate, protein, fat, ash and dietary fiber were 57.7~107.7%, 42.9~131.9%, 79.2~118.3%, 54.5~100%, 40.7~80.8% and 42.1~113.2%, respectively. 3. The ratio of A/B% of one serving in Ca, K, Na, P and Fe were 44.1~93.6%, 59.0~153.1%, 53.1~117.7% 64.6%~138.8 and 33.8~77.3%, respectively. That in Fe was the lowest among minerals. 4. The ratio of analytical value over Korean R.D.A(A/C%) in Ca was relatively higher (22.0~85.9%) than that in kcal(18~63%). 5. The ratio of A/C% in Fe was 25.1~64.3% and lower than that in Ca and protein in general.

<P>Vascular endothelial cells play an important role in leukocyte trafficking during the inflammatory process. Proinflammatory cytokines activate the expression of cell adhesion molecules in endothelial cells. Janus kinase (JAK) and signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) are important intracellular cytokine signaling molecules that are involved in immune responses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of JAK3 inhibition on the expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced cell adhesion molecules in vascular endothelial cells and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of JAK3 for myocardial vascular permeability in endotoxemic mice. A JAK3 inhibitor, JANEX-1, decreased the TNF-α-induced expression of intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, VCAM (vascular cell adhesion molecule)-1 and fractalkine in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The downregulation of the expression of these cell adhesion molecules by JANEX-1 was mediated via suppression of STAT3 phosphorylation and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation. In endotoxemic mice, pretreatment with JANEX-1 prevented not only an increase in the cardiac ICAM-1 expression by LPS in the arteriolar and capillary endothelial cells, but also myocardial vascular leakage. These results suggest that inhibition of the JAK/STAT pathway by JANEX-1 ameliorates the expression of TNF-α-induced cell adhesion molecules in HUVECs and improves myocardial vascular permeability.</P>
Comparison of Different Vehicles on Human Embryonic Stem Cells using Vitrification

Vitrification has been suggested to be an effective method for the cryopreservation of human ES cells. However, the efficiency of vitrification with different vehicles remains a matter of ongoing controversy. The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of cryopreservation in human ES cells by vitrification using different vehicles. A human ES cell line and a variety of vehicles, including micro-droplet (MD), open-pulled straw (OPS) and electron microscopic grid (EM-grid), were employed in an attempt to assess vitrification efficiency. In order to evaluate the survivability and the undifferentiated state of the post-vitrified human ES cells, we conducted alkaline phosphatase staining and characterization via both RT-PCR and immunofluorescence assays. The survival rates of the post-vitrified human ES cells using MD, OPS and EM-grid were determined to be 61.5%, 66.6% and 53.8%, respectively. There also exist significant differences between slow-freezing and vitrification (p<0.01). However, no significant differences were detected between the vehicle types. Finally, the pluripotency of human ES cells after thawing was verified by teratoma formation. Cryopreservation using vitrification is more effective than slow-freezing, and the efficiency of vehicles proved effective with regard to the preservation of human ES cells.
Evaluation of P-T Limit Curves According to Alternative Fracture Toughness Requirements

<P>During the heat-up and cool-down processes of nuclear power plants, temperature and pressure histories are to be maintained below the P-T limit curve to prevent the non-ductile failure of the RPV(Reactor Pressure Vessel). The ASME Code Sec. XI, App. G describe the detailed procedure for generating the P-T limit curve. The evaluation procedure is containing the evaluation methods of RTNDT using 10CFR50.61. However, recently, Alternative fracture toughness requirements were released 10CFR50.61a. Therefore, in this study, RTNDT of RPV according to the 10CFR50.61a was calculated and used for evaluation of P-T limit curve of a typical RPV under cool-down condition. As a result, it was proven that the P-T curve obtained from 10CFR50.61 is conservative because RTNDT value obtained from the alternative fracture toughness requirements are significantly low.</P>

Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in uncontrolled neuroin-flammation leading to many neurological diseases including Alzheimer's. One of the major antioxidant enzymes known to prevent deleterious effects due to oxidative stress is Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD). In this study, we examined the regulatory function of SOD on the LPS-induced signaling pathways leading to NF-kappaB activation, expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), in BV-2 cells using cell-permeable SOD. Treatment of BV-2 cells with cell-permeable SOD led to a decrease in LPS-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and significantly inhibited protein and mRNA levels of iNOS and COX-2 up-regulated by LPS. Production of NO and $PGE_2$ in LPS stimulated BV-2 cells was significantly abrogated by pretreatment with a cell-permeable SOD fusion protein. Furthermore, cell-permeable SOD inhibited LPS-induced NF-kappaB DNA-binding activity and activation of MAP kinases including ERK, JNK, and p38 in BV-2 cells. These data indicate that SOD has a regulatory function for LPS-induced NF-kappaB activation leading to expression of iNOS and COX-2 in BV-2 cells and suggest that cell-permeable SOD is a feasible therapeutic agent for regulation of ROS-related neurological diseases.
Evaluation of RPV according to alternative fracture toughness requirements

Recently, US NRC revised fracture toughness requirements as 10CFR50.61a to reduce the conservatism of 10CFR50.61. However, unlike previous studies relating to the initial regulation, structural integrity evaluations based on the alternative regulation are not sufficient. In the present study, PTS and P-T limit curve evaluations were carried out by using both regulations and resulting data were compared. With regard to the PTS evaluation, the results obtained from the alternative requirements were satisfied with the criterion whereas those obtained from the initial requirements did not meet the criterion. Also, with regard to the P-T limit curve evaluation, operating margin by 10CFR50.61a was greater than that by 10CFR50.61.
