        Developing value added service of cold chain logistics between China and Korea

        Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to elaborate value-added service of cold chain logistics between China and Korea. The covering strategy for developing the cold chain value-added service between the two countries is proposed. Design/methodology/approach – The author expounds the driving power for developing cold chain logistics between the two countries basing on the trade data of agricultural exports and imports, the tariff liberalization agreement of China–Korea FTA and the short distance between the two countries. It analyzes the value-added service of cold chain logistics with exemplary cases from four aspects (customized service, integrated service, consultation/solution and strategic alliance service), and its value-added mechanism for the enhancement of core competences of the entire cold chain. Then, by considering the drawbacks of the current cold chain logistics practices, between the two countries, the author proposes certain measures for fostering the cold chain value-added services between them. Findings – There are apparent mutual benefits in developing cold chain value-added service between the two countries, but there exists some shortcomings which impede the sound development of the cold chain logistics, such as low circulation rate and insufficient cold chain facility in China, shortage of integrated and compatible information platform between the two countries, few integrated cold chain service and strategic alliance service and occurrence of some trade frictions. Originality/value – The enforcement of China–Korea FTA will greatly reduce the tariff and increase the import and export volumes between the two countries; with the proximity between them, development of cold chain logistics between the two countries holds tremendous potential. This paper thoroughly discusses the mechanism of the value-added service of the cold chain logistics, and brings into focus the development of the value-added service in the two countries.

        Flywheel energy storage system with a permanent magnet bearing and a pair of hybrid ceramic ball bearings

        A flywheel energy storage system (FESS) with a permanent magnet bearing (PMB) and a pair of hybrid ceramic ball bearings is developed. A flexibility design is established for the flywheel rotor system. The PMB is located at the top of the flywheel to apply axialattraction force on the flywheel rotor, reduce the load on the bottom rolling bearing, and decrease the friction power loss. The magneticforce of the PMB is analyzed through finite element method, and the force with the air gap of the PMB is verified experimentally. Asqueeze film damper (SFD) is introduced to support the bottom rolling bearing, suppress lateral vibration, and enhance the stability of theflywheel rotor system. A dynamic model of FESS is established through transfer matrix method, Jones-Harris rolling bearing theory, anda finite length bearing dynamic model for SFD, which is verified by measuring the amplitude-frequency response. The effect of SFDradial clearance and unbalanced mass distribution on the dynamics of FESS is discussed. A spin-down test for the FESS prototype isconducted in a moderate vacuum. Results show that the hybrid bearing and flexibility design for the rotor system allow for the use of asmall rolling bearing to reduce the power loss of FESS caused by friction. The developed FESS is simple in structure, stable withoutactive control, low in cost, and convenient in maintenance.

        A QoS-aware Adaptive Coloring Scheduling Algorithm for Co-located WBANs

        Interference may occur when several co-located wireless body area networks (WBANs) share the same channel simultaneously, which is compressed by resource scheduling generally. In this paper, a QoS-aware Adaptive Coloring (QAC) scheduling algorithm is proposed, which contains two components: interference sets determination and time slots assignment. The highlight of QAC is to determine the interference graph based on the relay scheme and adapted to the network QoS by multi-coloring approach. However, the frequent resource assignment brings in extra energy consumption and packet loss. Thus we come up with a launch condition for the QAC scheduling algorithm, that is if the interference duration is longer than a threshold predetermined, time slots rescheduling is activated. Furthermore, based on the relative distance and moving speed between WBANs, a prediction model for interference duration is proposed. The simulation results show that compared with the state-of-the-art approaches, the QAC scheduling algorithm has better performance in terms of network capacity, average delay and resource utility.

      • A Study on Group Buying of O2O Mode using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets

        This paper proposes a Group Buying model (paid in advance) of online-to-offline mode using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets. As the time cost of consumers is getting higher and higher, time efficiency is getting much more important in all aspects of life, especially in catering industry, and one way that can lead to direct communication between store owners and consumers is Group Buying of online-to-offline mode, the center of which is the brand building and service efficiency. Although researches based on both users’ and sellers’ perspective about online buying are very rich, these findings are not entirely applicable for this new e-commerce model, and most of current research on online-to-offline mode use qualitative methods. More importantly, few researchers have concerned about the efficiency of Group Buying process and come up with related solutions to improve it. By constructing a business model of GB and conducting time efficiency and performance analysis on it, we find that the key transitions of the system only take up less than half of the time before the whole process has been completed. And when we shorten the feedback process, the percentage of finishing consumption in physical store in the whole Group Buying model can be improved by 14.5%. Thus, we suggest that suppliers and sellers should be more focused and efficient in encouraging customers review timely as well as giving consumers feedback as soon as possible, since consumer comments are proved to be significantly important for the retailers. Besides, site operators and store sellers can also use other ways like WeChat and microblogging to promote their site linkages and gain more market share.

        Inter-Provincial Railroad Network in China

        Using Social Network Analysis (SNA), this paper examines the inter-provincial logistics relationships in China. Based on the annual data of inter-provincial railway logistics quantity during the period 1998-2009, the degree of interconnection between regions could imply intensified trends of regional economic integration. The main results of the logistic relationships in China are as follows: the regional logistic interconnection, especially between western and eastern China has increased continuously, which would imply a rising national economic integration. However, the increased centralization index and the average Degree Centrality level imply that a logistics bottleneck has intensified in several hub provinces. Secondly, logistic center provinces evaluated by the Degree Centrality have changed. In 2009, Hebei, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Sichuan provinces revealed the highest inward Degree Centrality. Sichuan Province is the region that most surprisingly increased its centrality. Thirdly, the number of logistic hub provinces, evaluated by the Degree Betweenness Centrality, has increased. In 2008, Henan province was only a focal hub but in 2009, Shandong, Hubei, Sichuan provinces became logistic hubs. Lastly, the Community Modularity which analyzed grouping structures shows that there are three time-consistent communities. This means that even though there is enhanced between-region integration, the inter-regional inter-connection is more important in explaining the regional logistic relationship.

        Emergence of Tertiary Dirac Points in Graphene Moiré Superlattices

        <P>The electronic structure of a crystalline solid is largely determined by its lattice structure. Recent advances in van der Waals solids, artificial crystals with controlled stacking of two-dimensional (2D) atomic films, have enabled the creation of materials with novel electronic structures. In particular, stacking graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) introduces a moire superlattice that fundamentally modifies graphenes band structure and gives rise to secondary Dirac points (SDPs). Here we find that the formation of a moire superlattice in graphene on hBN yields new, unexpected consequences: a set of tertiary Dirac points (TDPs) emerge, which give rise to additional sets of Landau levels when the sample is subjected to an external magnetic field. Our observations hint at the formation of a hidden Kekule superstructure on top of the moire superlattice under appropriate carrier doping and magnetic fields.</P>
