<P>Montelukast (MKT), a leukotriene receptor antagonist, degrades when it is exposed to light. The analysis of MKT content in blood plasma by high-pressure liquid chromatography requires several sample preparation steps including deproteinization. This study aimed to evaluate MKT photodegradation in blood plasma samples and optimize a deproteinization method to reduce MKT photodegradation, and thereby improve analytical quality. We evaluated the stability of MKT in water and plasma in real time using high-pressure liquid chromatography and optimized a sample deproteinization procedure by comparing the effectiveness of several deproteinization methods. When exposed to light, MKT photodegraded quickly. Although MKT photodegradation was slightly slower than that in water, a half portion (55%) of the MKT in plasma degraded within 2h when exposed to light. The rate of MKT photodegradation was dramatically reduced by sample deproteinization using ZnSO4-Ba(OH)(2), but it was accelerated by deproteinization through precipitation using methanol or acetonitrile. These results suggest that precautions should be taken when preparing plasma samples for the analysis of MKT, and that deproteinization of such samples using ZnSO4-Ba(OH)(2) can reduce the risk of analytical error arising from MKT photodegradation. Pediatric Deaths Associated With Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Korea

As of September 3, 2022, 5,388,338 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and 46 deaths (3 in 2021 and 43 in 2022) were reported in children ≤ 18 years in Korea. Cumulative confirmed cases accounted for 67.3% of the population aged ≤ 18 years and case fatality rate was 0.85/100,000. Among 46 fatal cases, 58.7% were male and median age was 7 years. Underlying diseases were present in 47.8%; neurologic diseases (63.6%) and malignancy (13.6%) most common. Only four had history of COVID-19 immunization. COVID-19 associated deaths occurred at median 2 days from diagnosis (range: −1 to 21). Among COVID-19 deaths, 41.3% occurred before admission; 2 before hospital arrival and 17 in the emergency department. Among children whose cause was documented, myocarditis, respiratory and multiorgan failure were most common. COVID-19 associated death was seen early after diagnosis in children and public health policies to provide access to medical care for children with COVID-19 are essential during the pandemic.
A Trajectory for Faculty Professional Development in Collaborative Course Design

This study explored faculty professional development through a specific course design at a medium-sized national university in South Korea. Three professors in an English education major participated in the project-based faculty professional development to design a course and plan to create course content. Data were collected through interviews, meeting agenda notes, faculty reflection logs, and relevant documents during the fall semester of 2021. Thematic analysis was used to identify emerging themes or incidents regarding issues from the faculty professional development. During the faculty professional development with designing a new course, four intriguing themes were identified for promoting faculty professional development and strengthening a faculty community of practice; (1) creating an adequate atmosphere for faculty professional development, (2) sharing various perspectives with cultural competence, (3) negotiating and accommodating the direction of course design and related research and (4) awareness of constraints of time management. Commitment to constant communication and course design collaboration offers positive pedagogical implications for faculty professional development.
Reconfigurable Service Composition and Categorization for Power-Aware Mobile Computing

<P>The requirement of agile adaptation to varying resource constraints in mobile systems motivates the use of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), which can support the composition of two or more services to form a complex service. In this paper, we propose SOA-based middleware to support QoS control of mobile applications and to configure an energy-efficient service composition graph. We categorize services into two layers: functionality-centric services, which are connected to create a complex service to meet the user's intentions, and resource-centric services, which undertake distributed functionality-centric services in a way that increases the success rate of service composition while reducing contention at specific service nodes. We also present a service routing algorithm to balance the resource consumption of service providers on a service-overlay network. Through simulation of power-aware service composition using a realistic model based on ns-2 and traced data, we demonstrate that our approach can help both the mobile devices and the servers in a service-overlay network to reduce energy consumption without an increase in response time.</P>
Current Use of Depression Rating Scales in Mental Health Setting

Objective-This study was to investigate the current use of depression rating scales by psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in Korea. Methods-The questionnaires from many psychiatrists and clinical psychologists were included in the analysis. The questionnaire was composed of items about examining the percentage of patients clinically using depression rating scales, reasons for not use of them, the degree of satisfaction, the perceived agreement rate between the result of depression rating scales and doctor’s clinical interview in the evaluation of patients with depressive symptoms. Data were analyzed by χ2 and independent t-test. Results-The clinical use of depression rating scales was more frequent in the psychologists than in the psychiatrists. The purposes for using depression rating scales were assessed into six areas, there was no significant difference in between two groups, and both groups po-inted out their purpose as rating of severity and screening. The reasons for not using scales were that their interview may be sufficient for diagnosis and assessment of depressive patients and they are not familiar with the use of depression rating scales. The psychiatrists usually prefer the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Symptom Checklist 90-Revision (SCL-90-R) in order of frequency, and the clinical psychologists are more likely to use the BDI, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and SCL-90-R. Overall rate of satisfaction in the use of the scales was 67.29±14.45% and overall perceived agreement rate was 70.89±16.45%. Conclusion-Currently used depression rating scales at the clinical practice were not various. Therefore, to heighten clinicians’ utility of these depression rating scales measures, either educational efforts or advertisements, or both, will be necessary to spread them wildly.
Developing Efficient Protein Expression System to Produce Dengue Viral Non-structural Protein 1

Non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of dengue virus is one of the factors that develop the diseases of severe dengue shock syndrome (DSS) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) during the viral pathogenesis. However, the mechanism of NS1 in the progression of the disease is barely understood. Besides, efficient processes for the production of recombinant NS1 as a soluble form have not been established. In this study, NS1 expression systems have been generated. NS1 gene was genetically engineered to have advantage in protein purification and structure formation. Notably, to acquire good folded NS1, periplasm targeting signal sequence was fused to N-terminus of the NS1 gene. The engineered gene was cloned into pET11 or pUC19 expression vector and transformed in E.coli. The host strain, signal sequence, induction conditions were varied and expression of NS1 was assessed by SDS-PAGE and western blot. finally, proper size 40 kDa of NS1 was obtained from periplasm of E. coli. Our work will further help to find the role of NS1.

This study aimed to evaluate the differences in the baseline characteristics and patterns of antibiotic usage among hospitals based on their participation in the Korea National Antimicrobial Use Analysis System (KONAS). We obtained claims data from the National Health Insurance for inpatients admitted to all secondary- and tertiary-care hospitals between January 2020 and December 2021 in Korea. 15.9% (58/395) of hospitals were KONAS participants, among which the proportion of hospitals with > 900 beds (31.0% vs. 2.6%, P < 0.001) and tertiary care (50.0% vs. 5.2%, P < 0.001) was higher than that among non-participants. The consumption of antibiotics targeting antimicrobial-resistant gram positive bacteria (33.7 vs. 27.1 days of therapy [DOT]/1,000 patient-days, P = 0.019) and antibiotics predominantly used for resistant gram-negative bacteria (4.8 vs. 3.7 DOT/1,000 patient-days, P = 0.034) was higher in KONAS-participating versus -non-participating hospitals. The current KONAS data do not fully represent all secondary- and tertiary-care hospitals in Korea; thus, the KONAS results should be interpreted with caution.

Eph receptors and ephrins have been implicated in a variety of cellular processes, including morphology and motility, because of their ability to modulate intricate signaling networks. Here we show that the phosphotyrosine binding (PTB) domain-containing proteins AIDA-lb and Odin are tightly associated with the EphA8 receptor in response to ligand stimulation. Both AIDA- lb and Odin belong to the ankyrin repeat and sterile alpha motif domain-containing (Anks) protein family. The PTB domain of Anks family proteins is crucial for their association with the juxtamembrane domain of EphA8, whereas EphA8 tyrosine kinase activity is not required far this protein-protein interaction. In addition, we found that Odin is a more physiologically relevant partner of EphA8 in mammalian cells. Interestingly, overexpression of the Odin PTB domain alone attenuated EphA8-mediated inhibition of cell migration in HEK293 cells, suggesting that it acts as a dominant-negative mutant of the endogenous Odin protein. More importantly, small interfering RNA-mediated Odin silencing significantly diminished ephrinA5-induced EphA8 signaling effects, which inhibit cell migration in HEK293 cells and retract growing neurites of Neuro2a tells. Taken together, our findings support a possible function far Anks family proteins as scaffolding proteins of the EphA8 signaling pathway.
