A novel large-<i>N</i> reduction on <sup>S3</sup>: Demonstration in Chern–Simons theory

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We show that the planar Chern–Simons (CS) theory on <SUP>S3</SUP> can be described by its dimensionally reduced model. This description of CS theory can be regarded as a novel large-<I>N</I> reduction for gauge theories on <SUP>S3</SUP>. We find that if one expands the reduced model around a particular background consisting of multiple fuzzy spheres, the reduced model becomes equivalent to CS theory on <SUP>S3</SUP> in the planar limit. In fact, we show that the free energy and the vacuum expectation value of unknot Wilson loop in CS theory are reproduced by the reduced model in the large-<I>N</I> limit.</P>

We examined the effects of spectral composition conversion films on proliferation of protocorm-like body (PLB) of Cymbidium finlaysonianum. In this study, several red fluorescent films (NB-PS, BD-PS, CD-PC and ID-PS) were used for culture. These films, which developed by our group, have different characteristics on the pattern of absorption and emission spectra of the light. PLBs were cultured under transmitted light from these films provided from cool fluorescent light with 16h photoperiod for 40 days. Blank film (transparent PS film) was covered as the control. NB-PS and BD-PS films increased significantly the number of PLB after 20 days of culture. However, the number of PLB covered with ID-PS and CD-PC film was almost similar to blank film throughout the culture. At 40 days after culture, the increase of number of PLB was as follows; BD-PS>NB-PS>CD-PC>ID-PS>Blank. Also, NB-PS and BD-PS film increased significantly the normal PLBs. In addition, the number of PLB was almost similar regardless the period of the NB-PS film-covered time. These results showed that the proliferation of Cymbidium PLB would be controlled accurately by a delicate difference of the wavelength distribution of the light. We found that the red fluorescent films (NB-PS and BD-PS) increased the PLB proliferation of C. finlaysonianum, even if the film was covered only during early stage of the culture.

The fuel spray injected into a direct injection (DI) engine is strongly affected by both the in-cylinder air flow and the piston cavity wall impingement. The combined effect of the air flow and the wall impingement plays an important role on the spray development, mixture formation and subsequent combustion. In this study, the effects of the parallel cross-flow and the flat wall impingement were investigated on the spray development and dispersion. The spray was injected by a valve covered orifice (VCO) nozzle under various cross-flow velocities and ambient pressures. Tomographic images of the spray in a vertical and several horizontal planes were taken by a high-speed video camera and a continuous wave laser sheet. Moreover, the experiment results were compared with simulation which was calculated by the validated spray models based on the CONVERGE software. The results show that with increasing the cross-flow velocity, the spray tip penetration is decreased slightly before the impingement while the spray tip penetrates further in the cross-flow downstream direction after the impingement. The high ambient pressure tend to compress the spray profiles. Additionally, under the condition of the similar fuel injection and cross-flow momentum flux ratio, the distortion curves of the sprays in the cross flow upstream side agree well with each other whereas the spray dispersion in the downstream side is affected by the cross flow velocity. In the vertical plane along the flat wall, the head vortex is generated at the spray tip. With the head vortex growing, the surrounding air is significantly entrained into the spray. In the horizontal plane, an empty belt is observed near the head vortex core region. The quantitative analysis shows that the high velocity of the cross-flow favors the spray breakup and dispersion, leading to a larger head vortex and a wider spray angle.
