Sustainable hydrogen production from water using tandem dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells

If generated from water using renewable energy, hydrogen could serve as a carbon-zero, environmentally benign fuel to meet the needs of modern society. Photoelectrochemical cells integrate the absorption and conversion of solar energy and chemical catalysis for the generation of high value products. Tandem photoelectrochemical devices have demonstrated impressive solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiencies but have not become economically relevant due to high production cost. Dye-sensitized solar cells, those based on a monolayer of molecular dye adsorbed to a high surface area, optically transparent semiconductor electrode, offer a possible route to realizing tandem photochemical systems for H 2 production by water photolysis with lower overall material and processing costs. This review addresses the design and materials important to the development of tandem dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells for solar H 2 production and highlights current published reports detailing systems capable of spontaneous H 2 formation from water using only dye-sensitized interfaces for light capture.
Unraveling the EFL expat: challenging privilege through borderlands and Asia as Method

Each year, multitudes respond to the demand for native English speakers to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Asian countries, particularly China, Japan, and South Korea. These EFL transnationals are often young, new to living abroad, and inexperienced as educators. When they arrive, they often fnd a community, and an identity waiting for them: that of the expatriate. In this paper, I draw on research on EFL expatriates to produce a fguration, a way of engaging with and highlighting contradiction and disjuncture in the narrative identity of EFL expat taken up by some transnational EFL teachers. This fguration serves as a nexus to which I bring two bodies of theory with which to think. These are the Borderlands Thought of Gloria Anzaldúa and Chen Kwan-Hsing’s articulation of Asia as Method. Separately, I bring these into conversation with the fguration of the EFL expat, then consider what emerges when all three are brought together. In doing so, I highlight how the fguration of the EFL expat is outlined by privileged and constrictive colonial, racial, professional, and linguistic dichotomies. The theories of Anzaldúa and Chen help to unravel these binaries, suggesting ways in which transnational English teachers can move on from such constraints to become something more than in-but-not-of their local world. I also consider what it means for Western scholars to work respectfully in theoretical spaces that were not developed by and for them, proposing that such researchers can think of themselves as theoretical expatriates.

지난 8월에 핀란드 Jarvenpaa에서 5일간의 세계 루터 연구가들의 회합이 있었다. 과거에도 두 차례의 이런 모임이 있었는데 제1차는 1956년에 덴막 Aarhus에서, 제2차는 1960년에 독일 Munster에서 있었다. 이때에 적극적인 관심을 모으게 하여 루터교 세계연맹 신학국이 지난번의 핀란드 회합을 주선하게 된 것이다. 이번 모임에는 독일에서 40명과 미국에서 30명의 대표를 포함하여 약 120명의 대표들이 출석하여 "루터와 신비주의", "루터와 교회의 연관성 문제", "루터에게 있어서 자연적인 것의 문제" 그리고 "광신자들의 논쟁할 때 루터에게 있어서의 성화 문제"에 대한 강연을 들었다.
Federalizing the Education Gospel, 1945-2010

This paper explores the changing nature of federalism in US national discourse around education in the six decades after World War II. Three major forces catapulted education onto the national stage in the immediate post-WW 2 era: the mass spread of broadcast culture, especially television; the civil rights movement; and the Cold War. The federalizing of education encouraged politicians and others to argue that schools could solve the nation’s greatest challenges. But neither that federalization nor the hopeful assumptions of policymakers were inevitable. Instead, the path of federal education politics has been contingent on complex, multilevel dynamics of education discourse, a political dynamic of federalism that extends beyond any formal constitutional relationships between state and federal government.

Though there is a wealth of digital resources available for independent computer-assisted language learning, language teachers may find mixed success in supporting learners in using it. Teachers need to understand their learners and how educational information-communication technology and the target language are integrated in their lives. We present the concepts of digital ecology and digital bricolage. Building on a prior survey study on English learner technology use at a Korean college, this qualitative case study explores ways that four Korean college students integrated technology and English into their lives. Drawing on a priori and emergent themes from interviews, we explore students’ digital ecologies and their processes of digital bricolage. We found that types of technology use varied across these cases, suggesting the value of digital ecologies for thinking about student technology use. Further, variations of technology use across the cases suggest that learners draw selectively from their available digital ecologies based on their perceptions of what it means to learn English and their personal priorities. We propose a framework for understanding language learner digital bricolage based on formality and instrumentality. This framework is of value to researchers and teachers who want to support students in digitally mediated self-directed language learning.

The article analyzes and shows the rapid development information and telecommunication technologies, and their capabilities are becoming unprecedented for human development, effective solutions to many professional problems. The analysis of information and communication technologies of education used in higher educational institutions of Ukraine confirmed that for the effective use of special teaching methods, as well as software and technical teaching aids, it is necessary to have a trained teaching staff and students.
