      • Preliminary pharmacognostical and phytochemical evaluation of Stachys tibetica Vatke

        Zulfiqar Ali Bhat,Dinesh Kumar,Vijender Kumar,Ishtaq Ahmad Chashoo,Nisar Ahmad Khan,Irfat Ara,Mohammad Yassin Shah 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2012 TANG Vol.2 No.1

Stachys tibetica Vatke (Lamiaceae) is an important medicinal plant in the folk medicine of Ladakh, India and Tibet for the treatment of various mental disorders. Infusion and decoction of the whole plant is used as a cup of tea for a severe fever, headaches and to relieve tension. The recent study is aimed to evaluate the preliminary pharmacognostical and phytochemical nature of Stachys tibetica Vatke. The whole plant material was subjected to successive soxhlet extraction with petroleum ether (40 - 60C), chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol and finally decocted with water to get the respective extracts. The fluorescence characteristics of the powdered materials were analysed under ultraviolet light and ordinary light. Different physicochemical parameters such as ash value, extractive value, foaming index, pH values, loss on drying and determination of foreign matter were carried out as per WHO guidelines. The total fat, flavonoid, saponin and volatile contents were also determined. Macroscopical studies revealed the authentication of the plant drug. Physicochemical parameters helped to standardize the plant material while preliminary qualitative chemical tests of different extracts showed the presence of Glycosides, Carbohydrates, Phytosterols/triterpenoids, Saponins, Fixed oils, Fats and phenols/tannins. Quantification of the total flavonoids and saponins and contents were determined as 54.66 ± 0.58 mg/g and 75.42 ± 0.48 mg/kg respectively, while the volatile and fat contents were 6.5% and 0.7% respectively. Results may lay the foundation for the standardization of the drug and discovery of new molecules from S. tibetica for the treatment of various diseases.

Effect of successive extracts of Stachys tibetica Vatke (Lamiaceae) in anxiety

        Kumar, Dinesh,Bhat, Zulfiqar Ali,Shah, M.Y. 경희한의학연구센터 2012 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.12 No.4

Stachys tibetica Vatke (Lamiaceae) is an important medicinal plant in the folk medicine of Ladakh, India and Tibet for the treatment of various mental disorders. Infusion and decoction of the whole plant is used as a cup of tea in severe fever, headache and to relieve tension. Present study is aimed to evaluate the anxiolytic effect of successive extracts of Stachys tibetica Vatke (SES). Stachys tibetica Vatke (1 kg) was subjected to successive extraction in a soxhlet apparatus with different solvents of increasing polarity like petroleum ether ($40-60^{\circ}C$), chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol and finally decocted with water (yield 7.08 %, 3.98 %, 2.02 %, 16.40 % and 21.53 % w/w respectively). All successive extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening. Rutin was identified by TLC method in the extracts. SES were evaluated for anxiolytic activity using elevated plus maze and light/dark arena tests in rats. Phytochemical studies showed the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, glycosides, tannins, alkaloids etc. which might be responsible for anxiolytic activity. TLC analysis of the extracts also showed the presence of flavonoids (rutin). SES increased number of entries and time spent in open arms on the elevated plus maze test while as in the light/dark arena test; they showed an increase in number of crossings and time spent in light arena. The results of both the models of anti-anxiety studies were reflected on the 1st, 3rd and 7th day. Methanol and aqueous showed the most, chloroform and petroleum ether ($40-60^{\circ}C$) intermediate and ethyl acetate the least anxiolytic activity ($^*P$ <0.05, $^{**}P$ <0.01, $^{***}P$ <0.001) in both the models. The results strongly justify the use of this plant for treatment of anxiety. Further studies are in progress in our laboratory to isolate and identify the components responsible for anxiolytic activity and the mechanism of action involved.

Investigations of thermoelectric properties of different gallium nitride polytypes through first-principles approach

        Ul Haq Bakhtiar,Kim Se-Hun,Alsardia M.M.,Khadka I.B.,Chaudhry Aijaz Rasool,AlFaify S.,Ahmed R.,Shah Zulfiqar Ali 한국물리학회 2023 Current Applied Physics Vol.49 No.-

In recent years, exploring new polytypes of III-V semiconductors has been widely practiced for the development of thermoelectric devices of high efficiency. In this work, the thermoelectric properties of new polytypes, namely the wurtzite(wz), Berrylium oxide (β-BeO), Nickel arsenide (NiAs), Silicon carbide (SiC), and Titanium arsenide (TiAs) phases of GaN have been investigated using the first-principles approaches. It is found that the p-type of doping induces enhancement of the power factors (PFs) and figure-of-merits (zT) of the GaN polytypes. The optimal p-type doping for PFs has been recognized as - 1.67 eV for wz-GaN, - 1.78 eV for β-BeO-GaN, - 1.33 eV for NiAs-GaN, - 1.58 eV for SiC-GaN, and - 1.48 eV for TiAs-GaN. These optimal p-type doping has induced the room-temperature PFs as high as 13.75 × 1010 W/mK2s recorded for wz-GaN, 13.61 × 1010 W/mK2s for β-BeO-GaN, 41.14 × 1010 W/mK2s for NiAs-GaN, 14.06 × 1010 W/mK2s for SiC-GaN, and 49.21 × 1010 W/mK2s for TiAs-GaN. Furthermore, the PFs of the GaN polytypes are enhanced by increasing the temperature. Due to such significant PFs, the zT values corresponding to p-type doping have been recorded as 1.013 for wz-GaN, 0.998 for β-BeO-GaN, 1.00 for NiAs-GaN, 1.015 for SiC-GaN, and 0.999 for TiAs-GaN. Moreover, we comprehensively discussed the electrical and thermal conductivities and Seebeck coefficients (S) for the predicted GaN polytypes. The results of the thermoelectric properties presented in this study reveal the predicted GaN polytypes may find interesting applications in thermoelectric devices for clean energy harvesting.
