In order to evaluate estrogenic compounds in brown algae, an in vitro test system for the verification of estrogenic activity was applied. Fractions from ethanol extracts of each brown alga were prepared by a systematic fractionation procedure with solvents such as H₂O, hexane, butanol and methanol. Aqueous fractions of brown algae showed the highest estrogenic activities. Estrogenic activities of 500 ㎍/㎖ aqueous fractions of Undaria pinnatifida and Laminaria japonica showed almost the same strength as that of 10?? M standard solution (17β-estradiol). Furthermore, estrogenic activities of 500 ㎍/㎖ aqueous fractions of Ecklonia stolonifera and Porphyra suborbiculate represented higher activities than that of 10?? M 17β-estradiol. These observations suggest that aqueous fractions of all these brown algae are expected to possess estrogenic compounds and could be developed as estrogenic agents for postmenopausal disorder.

Objective: The present study is to evaluate satisfaction of vehicle outside door handles (ODHs) by design factor for improving grip comfort. Background: Existing studies have mainly focused on size and/or shape of typical handles (e.g., cylindrical handle); therefore, a specialized research for ergonomic ODH design is needed. Method: Satisfaction (operation, shape, height, width, tilting angle, central radius (R), inside upper R, inside middle R, inside lower R, pressure distribution, and overall satisfaction) by design factor (2-level: section width; 3-level: central R, inside upper R, inside middle R, inside lower R, tilting angle, and section height) were analyzed by applying a Taguchi L18 design (2¹ × 3<SUP>6</SUP>). Design levels by design factor were determined referring to 5 existing ODHs. 18 ODHs developed in the study were relatively evaluated comparing with a reference ODH (0 point) through an 11-point bipolar scale (-5: extremely dissatisfaction, 0: no difference, +5: extremely satisfaction) by twenty participants aged 20s ~ 50s. Results: Section width and inside upper R were significant on satisfaction of ODH. Conclusion: A design guideline for ODH was established considering users’ satisfaction. Application: The design factor evaluation protocol using Taguchi method applied in the study can be applicable to the other vehicle moving handles (e.g., inside door handle, door trim grip handle, door trim pull handle).

본 논문에서는 자연어 질의가 가지는 특징들을 살펴보고, 범주 문법과 논리구조에 기반한 한국어 의미 분석기[권혜진 1997]를 기반으로 parsing기법을 개선하여 시스템의 속도를 향상시키는 방법을 제안한다. 또 자연어 처리의 각 단계의 분석 점수를 결합하여 애매성을 내포하고 있는 자연어 질의로부터 의미 분석의 best result를 얻는 방법을 소개하고 튜닝을 통해 그 결과를 확인한다.

<P>The purpose of the present study was to elucidate whether premature senescence contributes to the outcome of radiotherapy (RT) and to validate senescence biomarkers in vitro and in vivo. Cultured human cancer cell lines and xenografted mice were exposed to single (SR; 2, 6 or 12 Gy) or fractionated radiation (FR; 3 x 2 Gy or 6 x 2 Gy), and premature senescence was assessed using senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) activity, hypophosphorylation of pRb and p21 accumulation. A variety of senescence-associated biomarkers including cathepsin D (CD), the eukaryotic translation elongation factors eEF1A1, eEF1B2, decoy receptor 2 and Dec1 were further validated in vivo or in vitro. We demonstrated the beneficial tumor suppressive role of ionizing radiation (IR)-induced premature senescence in vitro and in vivo. FR inhibited tumor growth via induction of premature senescence as effectively as an equivalent SR dose (6 Gy). In addition, CD and eEF1 were valuable biomarkers of cellular senescence in either SR- or RF-exposed carcinoma cells or xenograft mice. Our results suggest that 2 Gy of a conventional RT regime could achieve a better clinical outcome if premature senescence could be increased through an improved understanding of its molecular action mechanism.</P>
Distribution Coefficients of Th(IV) Onto Granite and Biotite Gneiss in Gyeongju Groundwater

Th(IV) is a stable actinide that can act as a chemical analogue of U(IV) and Pu(IV), which are important radionuclides in safety assessments of deep geological repositories (DGR). Therefore, to understand the geochemical behaviour of U(IV) and Pu(IV), batch sorption of Th(IV) onto crystalline rocks were performed in oxidising conditions. The distribution coefficients (Kd) of Th(IV) were of particular interest. Gyeongju fresh groundwater (GF) and Gyeongju brackish groundwater (GB) were obtained at the Gyeongju Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste (LILW) Disposal Facility. Crystalline granite (gr) and biotite gneiss (bg) were collected in Gyeongju and Gwacheon respectively and were grounded to a particle size smaller than 150 μm. Sorption samples were continuously shaken for 7 days under 200 rpm at 25°C. The liquid-to-solid ratio (V/m) was 200 L·kg-1. Th(IV) concentrations of the sorption samples were determined by UV-Vis-NIR absorption colorimetry from the formation of Th(IV)-arsenazo III complexes. Although the method allowed the initial Th(IV) concentrations to be determined, the final Th(IV) concentrations fell below the limit of detection (LOD), 6.27×10-9 mol·L-1. Taking the LOD as the final concentrations, conservative Kd were calculated to be 4,410 L·kg-1 for GF-gr and GF-bg, and 7,830 L·kg-1 for GB-gr and GB-bg. The result indicates a strong sorption affinity of Th(IV) onto granite and biotite gneiss within Gyeongju groundwater, suggesting a similar behaviour for U(IV) and Pu(IV). Furthermore, comparison of the conservative Kd obtained from the experiment were compared with existing Kd values of Th(IV). Such analysis and comparison of Th(IV) Kd in various types of groundwater could help locate the optimal site for a DGR in South Korea.
