<P>Optical diffraction tomography (ODT) enables the reconstruction of the three-dimensional (3D) refractive-index (RI) distribution of a biological cell, which provides invaluable information for cellular and subcellular structures in a non-invasive manner. However, ODT suffers from an inferior axial resolution, due to the limited accessible angles imposed by the numerical aperture of the objective lens. In this study, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to enhance the 3D reconstruction performance in ODT. By employing trapezoidal micromirrors, side scattered signals from the sample are measured for various side plane-wave-illumination angles. By combining the side scattered fields with the forward scattered fields, the axial resolution and 3D image quality of ODT are improved, without changing optical instruments. The feasibility and applicability of the proposed method are demonstrated by reconstructing the 3D RI distribution of a red blood cell and HeLa cells in hydrogel. We also present systematic analyses of the improved 3D imaging performance using numerical simulations and experimental measurements for the 3D transfer function, a point object, and a microsphere. The analyses demonstrate an improved axial resolution of 0.31 μm, 4.8 times smaller than that of the conventional method. The proposed method enables the non-invasive and accurate 3D imaging of 3D cultured cells, which is crucial for cell biology studies.</P>
AirBeam: 손가락에 압축공기를 사용하여 전달하는 햅틱 피드백

Head-Mounted Displays (HMD)의 발달 및 보편화로 햅틱 피드백 디바이스의 필요성이 증가하고 있다. 그 중 손가락 착용형 햅틱 디바이스에 대한 연구는 점점 더 증가하고 있다. 우리는 허공에서의 손가락 인터랙션을 위한 웨어러블 햅틱 디바이스 AirBeam 을 소개한다. AirBeam 은 기존의 모터의 진동이나 물리적인 접촉을 사용하여 햅틱 피드백을 재현하는 이전의 연구와 달리 압축 공기를 사용하여 사용자에게 햅틱 피드백을 전달한다. AirBeam 은 압축 공기의 세기를 조절하여 손가락에 전달되는 햅틱 피드백의 강약을 조절 할 수 있다. 또한 2 개의 DC 모터를 사용하며 공기의 분사방향을 조절 할 수 있으며, 이를 통하여 사용자에게 손가락 끝에서 2 자유도의 햅틱 피드백을 전달 할 수 있다. 우리는 AirBeam 을 사용하여 사용자의 경험을 증대 시킬 수 있는 3 가지 가능한 시나리오를 제시하고, 향후 연구에 대하여 소개한다.

<P>Both lipid accumulation and oxidative stress are major pathologic contributors to the development of hepatic steatosis. Treatment with molybdate reduces hepatic levels of lipids in diabetic rats. Potential activities of molybdate as an antioxidant have also been demonstrated in various animal models. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of sodium molybdate dihydrate (SM) on hepatic steatosis and associated disturbances in a widely used mouse model of the metabolic disease. Male C57B1/6 mice at 10 weeks of age were fed a diet deficient in methionine and choline (MCD) and bottled water containing SM for four weeks. The SM treatment markedly attenuated MCD-induced accumulation of lipids, mainly triglycerides, in the liver. Lipid catabolic autophagic pathways were activated by SM in the MCD-fed mouse livers, as evidenced by a decreased level of p62 expression. MCD-induced oxidative damage, such as lipid and protein oxidation, was also alleviated by SM in the liver. However, the level of MCD-induced hepatocellular damage was not affected by SM. Taken together, these findings suggest that molybdate can be used in the treatment and prevention of hepatic steatosis without inducing adverse effects in the liver. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental study to investigate the effects of molybdate in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and also the first that demonstrates molybdate-induced autophagy.</P>
MouthNode: Exploring Actuation in the Mouth to Convey Information

Through haptic feedback, information can be directly transferred to the user in private. So, there are previous researches conducted on various parts of the body as a medium of information transfer such as the ear, finger, and wrist. However, the teeth, which is as sensitive as finger or ear has not been explored. In this paper, we propose MouthNode, which uses an unshielded Linear Resonant Actuator (LRA) system to convey information on the teeth through vibration. From the technical evaluation, our prototype can generate up to 0.28N of force, and through our pilot study, the user can feel a stimulus at a minimum force of 0.23N. This result confirms that this system is feasible in conveying information through tactile feedback on the teeth.
Enhancing Spatial Input on the Body with a Smart-Ring

Smart, interactive fabrics are enabling a new generation of wearables that can sense touch input with high fidelity. However, while sensing systems are improving, we argue that human challenges remain: touch input on clothes will be hard due to a lack distinctive physical cues to guide users and the fact that many wearable scenarios involve eyes-free input. We propose to address these issues by combining touch selections on the body with complementary input on a ring wearable. We validate this idea with an empirical study that contrasts targeting performance with input on the body against that with a combination of input on ring and body. The results show that times remain static, while error rates and workload are significantly improved.
VectorWatch : 기어 메커니즘을 이용하여 가상의 힘을 제공하는 웨어러블 디바이스

우리는 특수한 기어 메커니즘을 통해 사용자에게 가상의 힘을 느끼게 하는 웨어러블, VectorWatch 를 제안한다. 가상의 물리력을 구현하기 위해 감속메커니즘과 특수 변속 메커니즘을 사용했다. 감속메커니즘은 6 개의 기어로 이루어져 모터의 토크를 56.8 배 증가시킨다. 모터토크가 증가됨의 따라 저전압 소형 모터로도 충분한 양의 토크를 제공할 수 있게 한다. 특수 변속 메커니즘은 2 개의 기어로 이루어져 있어 축에 달린 무게추를 자동변속시켜주는 역할을 한다. 무게추는 네 가지 다른 구간을 회전하게 되는데 빠른 구간, 감속 구간, 느린 구간, 가속 구간으로 구성되어 있고 빠른 구간의 회전속력은 느린 구간의 회전 속력의 4.4 배이다. 이를 통해 추가적인 소프트웨어 없이 토크와 가속을 부여하게 되고 하드웨어만으로 사용자에게 가상의 물리력을 전달할 수 있다. 또한 우리는 VectorWatch 가 사용될 수 있는 3 가지 시나리오를 제안한다. 손목에 착용하게 되는 VectorWatch 는 손의 자유도가 높아 다양한 상황에 활용된다. 첫째는 네비게이션으로 사용자에게 가상의 물리력으로 방향과 정보를 안내해 사용자의 시선을 분산시키지 않고 직관적으로 정보를 전달하는 것이다. 둘째는 타블렛에서의 내재 상호작용과 정보전달로 사용자에게 물리력을 가해 공감각적인 경험을 유도하하거나 효과적으로 정보를 전달하도록 돕는 것이다. 마지막은 가상현실, 증강현실에 있어 사용될 수 있는데 디지털에 존재하는 가상의 물체에 물리적 속성을 더해 몰입감과 현실감을 늘리는 데에 있다.
Visualization and label-free quantification of microfluidic mixing using quantitative phase imaging

<P>Microfluidic mixing plays a key role in various fields, including biomedicine and chemical engineering. To date, although various approaches for imaging microfluidic mixing have been proposed, they provide only quantitative imaging capability and require exogenous labeling agents. Quantitative phase imaging techniques, however, circumvent these problems and offer label-free quantitative information about concentration maps of microfluidic mixing. We present the quantitative phase imaging of microfluidic mixing in various types of polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic channels with different geometries; the feasibility of the present method was validated by comparing it with the results obtained by theoretical calculation based on Fick's law. A novel agar-degrading bacterium mbrc-1 was isolated from seashore of Kyungpo at Gangwon province and cultured in marine broth 2216 medium. Isolated bacterium mbrc-1 was named as Flammeovirga sp. mbrc-1 based on the 16S rDNA sequence. Its agarase showed maximum activity of 923 units/L at pH 7.0 and 45℃ and sustained 90% remaining activity after exposed to 45℃ for 2 hours. The enzyme hydrolyzed agarose to yield neoagarohexaose (18.5%), neoagarotetraose (38%) and neoagarobiose (43.5%), indicating that the enzyme is β-agarase. Thus, isolated bacterium and its β-agarase would be useful for the industrial production of neoagarotetraose and neoagarobiose.
