<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The microstructure and electrochemical behavior of MnO<SUB>x</SUB>@reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites derived from a MnO<SUB>2</SUB>/GO template are thoroughly investigated. An as-prepared MnO<SUB>2</SUB>/GO mixture is gradually converted to MnO<SUB>2</SUB>/rGO in a reduction process and is subsequently annealed under specific conditions to form the Mn<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>/rGO composites. The overall Li<SUP>+</SUP> conversion reactions are visualized and the stability of the transformed MnO<I>x</I> phases is evaluated using density function theory calculations. The semispherical Mn<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> anchored composite exhibits stable electrode performances, including both the Li<SUP>+</SUP> anode and the Li<SUP>+</SUP>-air cathode catalyst, induced by the electrochemically favorable composite with an effective large contact area between the active materials and the electronic conductive rGO. A 13-year-old, Maltese dog presented with syncope and lethargy. Abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated anechoic peritoneal effusion and hepatic congestion. A focal echogenic round mass compressing the right ventricle and atrium was observed on echocardiography. Cardiac tamponade and right ventricular outflow tract obstruction occurred. On computed tomography, a homogeneous soft-tissue structure compressing the right chamber without contrast enhancement, suspected to be loculated pericardial effusion. During pericardiocentesis, cardiac tamponade was resolved, and irregular pericardial thickening was noted. Pericardial effusion was exudate and gram-positive bacterial colonies were observed on cytology. A diagnosis of fibrinous pericarditis secondary to bacterial infection was established.

We report a unique case of vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks manifesting as isolated, recurrent, orthostatic dizziness with posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) stenosis. A 57-year-old male patient without past medical history, pre-sented with brief orthostatic dizziness for 2 weeks. There was no associated nausea, vomiting, diplopia, or weakness. On neuro-otologic examination, the pa-tient did not show spontaneous, positional, or gaze-evoked nystagmus. Vestibular function tests such as caloric test, head impulse test, video-oculography, and tilt table test were normal. Brain diffusion-weighted images showed multiple small high signal intensities in the bilateral cerebellar hemispheres. Brain magnetic re-sonance angiography revealed hypoplasia of the right vertebral artery without fo-cal intracranial focal stenosis. Four-vessel cerebral angiogram showed severe stenosis at the right PICA artery. Our patient’s clinical scenario appears unique hemo-dynamic spells without symptoms or signs of posterior circulation ischemia. Phy-sicians should also consider cerebrovascular ischemic when the patient suffers repeated orthostatic dizziness that is not explained clinically.

Tau oligomers play critical roles in tau pathology and are responsible for neuronal cell death and transmitting the disease in the brain. Accordingly, preventing tau oligomerization has become an important therapeutic strategy to treat tauopathies, including Alzheimer’s disease. However, progress has been slow because detecting tau oligomers in the cellular context is difficult. Working toward tau-targeted drug discovery, our group has developed a tau-BiFC platform to monitor and quantify tau oligomerization. By using the tau-BiFC platform, we screened libraries with FDA-approved and passed phase I drugs and identified levosimendan as a potent anti-tau agent that inhibits tau oligomerization. 14C-isotope labeling of levosimendan revealed that levosimendan covalently bound to tau cysteines, directly inhibiting disulfide-linked tau oligomerization. In addition, levosimendan disassembles tau oligomers into monomers, rescuing neurons from aggregation states. In comparison, the well-known anti-tau agents methylene blue and LMTM failed to protect neurons from tau-mediated toxicity, generating high-molecular-weight tau oligomers. Levosimendan displayed robust potency against tau oligomerization and rescued cognitive declines induced by tauopathy in the TauP301L-BiFC mouse model. Our data present the potential of levosimendan as a disease-modifying drug for tauopathies.
Quantifying the Prevalence of Acute Vestibular Neuritis through Big Data Analysis

Objectives: Big data analytics in healthcare research have gained momentum, offering unprecedented opportunities to investigate complex medical conditions like acute vestibular neuritis (AVN). However, an inappropriate definition can introduce bias and inaccuracies into prevalence estimation, making the results unreliable and hindering cross-study comparisons. The Health Insurance data in South Korea will be used to create a robust operational definition for AVN. Methods: The study utilized the National Patients Sample dataset from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) of the Republic of Korea. The operational definition of AVN was defined using the HIRA data, which includes specific codes for diagnosis, testing, and medications. The revised categorization scheme for AVN was presented as case 1 through case 5, with criteria for each category. Results: The optimal conditions are deemed to be those that encompass the outcomes of both case 5 and case 1-1, encompassing all conditions. The study also provided prevalence estimates for subgroups based on demographic factors (age, sex), and found a consistent pattern throughout all years, sex, and age. Conclusions: The study analyzed the prevalence of AVN in case 1 and case 5, which were similar to the reference prevalence of 3.5 per 100,000 people reported in other countries. The study’s results are encouraging for several reasons, including the validity of the operational definitions used, and the agreement between the study’s prevalence estimates and the reference prevalence. The operational definition in statistics, in the context of big data, serves as a precise and standardized criterion.
