Characteristics of wet flue gas desulfurization and in-furnace desulfurization of domestic and overseas limestone with different crystallinity and crystalline size are studied in this article. Properties of desulfurization were evaluated in relation to physicochemical/ mineralogical characteristics, degree of pore formation for different calcination temperatures and TNC(total neutralizing capability). TNC of domestic high crystalline limestone was lower than that of overseas one. On the other hand, the porosity after calcination was shown to be relatively high for domestic limestone, which had high initial rates of desulfurization reactions in-furnace. Based on low pore formation and porosity with high TNC of crystalline high-Ca limestones compared to macrocrystalline ones, the former are preferred for wet desulfurization processes.
Optical Properties of Ge-Doped ZnO Thin Films Studied with Spectroscopic Elipsometry

We prepared Ge-doped ZnO (ZnO : Ge) thin films on silicon substrates by using RF magnetron sputtering. We used as targets mixtures of ZnO and Ge, the RF power was 70 and 150 W and the Ge mole ratio was varied between 0 mol% and 3 mol% with respect to the ZnO content. During growth, we used two kinds of gas ows: Ar : O₂ = 40 : 5 and Ar : N2 = 40 : 5. The substrate temperatures were kept at room temperature (RT) and 400 ℃. We measured the pseudo-dielectric functions by using spectroscopic ellipsometry at RT. By using the parametric optical constant model and performing alayer model analysis, we obtained the Kramers-Kronig-consistentdielectric functions of the ZnO : Ge films. To find the band gap energies of the ZnO : Ge films, we applied the standard critical point model to the 2nd derivatives of the dielectric functions (ε = ε₁ +ⅰε₂) of the ZnO : Ge films. Among the ZnO : Ge films grown on Si substrates, the thin films grown in the Ar and O₂ mixture showed dielectric functions closer to that of a purely crystalline ZnO film,which indicate shigh crystallinity. Theband-gapenergies of the ZnO:Ge film sincreased with increasing Ge content. We attribute the blue shift of the band-gap energy to the Burstein-Moss shift (band-filling effect) and/or to the alloying effect of ZnO : Ge. The larger blue shift of the ZnO : Ge films grown in the Ar and N₂ mixture suggests that more carriers were activated in that mixture than in the Ar and O₂ mixture. With increasing Ge content, the linewidth broadened due to an increase in alloy disorder. In the case of ZnO : Ge grown under a gas flow ratio of Ar : N₂ = 40 : 5, a deep-level transition was observed near 2.5 eV in the dielectric function spectra and is attributed to atransition related to oxygen vacancies. In order to investigate the effect of annealing on the ZnO : Ge films, we annealed the ZnO : Ge films grown on silicon substrates at RT with a gas how ratio of Ar : O₂ = 40 : 5 in oxygen (O2) ambient. When the annealing temperature was increased, both the band gap energy and broadening parameter of the ZnO : Ge film decreased.

Precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC) inorganic fillers for plastic offera higher replacement ratio with improved mechanical properties than any other inorganic fillers. Due to its secure economic feasibility, its fields of application areexpanding. For optimized PCC grain size and polymer replacement ratio, it is good to maintain at least $0.035{\mu}m$ grains and keep double the grain size of distance between particles, depending on the molecular weight and volume replacement rate of the polymer. PCC has unique characteristics, ie, with smaller grain size, dispersibility decreases, and if grain size is not homogenous, polymer cracking occurs. The maximum replacement ratio of PCC is approximately 30%, but in the range of 10 - 15% it produces the highest mechanical strength. When mixed with a biodegradable plastic like starch, it also improves initial environmental degradability.

A new sound insulation metamaterial (SIM) is designed by combining a Helmholtz resonator and a fractal structure for sound insulation in the frequency range of 600 to 1700 Hz. Using a fractal-based internal structure, the designed hybrid SIM shows a relatively constant value of sound transmission loss (STL) over the target frequency range. The basic concept of this work is to develop two functional parts working in each effective frequency range. One is a Helmholtz resonance structure that operates with a high value of STL from 600 to 1000 Hz, and the other is an internal fractal structure that shows a high STL at higher frequencies in the 1000 to 1700 Hz range. In this work, the proposed metamaterial has a mean of 16.34 dB with a standard deviation of 1.73 dB within the wide target range of 600 to 1700 Hz. Additionally, the proposed SIM is approximately 40 % smaller in size than the previous resonator and has a higher mean STL with a small ∆STL of 1.7 dB between highest and lowest values.

Hemicellulosic hydrolyzate obtained from rice straw was evaluated to determine if it was a suitable fermentation medium for the production of xylitol by Candida mogii ATCC 18364. To obtain xylose selectively from rice straw, it is important to establish rapid hydrolysis conditions that yield xylose-rich substrates. The results of hydrolysis experiments indicated that the optimal reaction conditions for the recovery of xylose from rice straw hemicellulose were obtained using a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.5%, a reaction temperature of $130^{\circ}C$, a reaction time of 20 min and a solid to liquid ratio of 1:10. Because the fermentation of concentrated acid hydrolyzates can be inhibited by compounds present in the raw material or produced during the hydrolysis process, various methods were tested to determine if they could detoxify the hydrolyzates and thus improve xylitol production. The greatest xylitol yield (0.53 g/g) and volumetric productivity (0.38 g/L h) were obtained when an overlimed hydrolyzate was treated with activated charcoal.
