A case of pentalogy of Fallot in a pomeranian dog

A five-month-old female pomeranian dog (weighing 0.95 kg) with a history of cyanosis, exercise intolerance, and delayed growth presented to Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Gyeongsang National University. Findings on diagnostic imaging studies showed a dextropositioned and over-riding aorta, pulmonic stenosis, ventricular septal defect, right ventricular hypertrophy, and atrial septal defect. Based on the diagnostic findings, the dog was diagnosed as a case of tetralogy of Fallot with atrial septal defect (pentalogy of Fallot).

Color Doppler imaging (CDI) was carried out to evaluate the effects of anti-glaucoma drugs on ophthalmic circulation using CDI-derived resistive index (RI) values. CDI was performed on nine Beagle dogs, and RI values were calculated for the medial long posterior ciliary artery before and after the administration of anti-glaucoma drugs. A significant increase in RI values was found after topical administration of levobunolol (p < 0.05) or dipivefrin (p < 0.05). Pilocarpine showed no effects on RI values after topical administration. The results suggest that some anti-glaucoma drugs could affect ophthalmic blood flow.

<P>A 4-year-old beagle had intermittent vomiting and weight loss for 1 month. On plain radiography, an approximately 3.5-cm, radiopaque, linear foreign body was identified in the region of the liver. On ultrasonography, a hyperechoic linear structure with reverberation was identified in the left lobe or quadrate lobe. On computed tomography(CT), a thin hyperattenuating material consistent with a metallic foreign body was identified just medial to the gall bladder. Removal of the foreign body was performed without complications. We present a rare case in which a metallic foreign body was embedded in the liver asymptomatically and found incidentally during a clinical examination performed to ascertain the cause of clinical signs.</P>
Sonographic Detection of Small Amounts of Free Peritoneal Gas in Beagle Dogs

<P>The detection of small amounts of free peritoneal gas in the canine patient can pose a diagnostic dilemma. The objective of this study was to determine how much of this free gas could be detected ultrasonographically. Ultrasound examinations were carried out after increments (0.1 m<I>l</I>) of air were intraperitoneally injected. Via ultrasonography, 0.4 m<I>l</I> of free gas can be reliably detected. The authors concluded that ultrasonography is a very sensitive modality for the detection of small amounts of peritoneal free gas (above 0.4 m<I>l</I>).</P>
다이캐스팅 공정으로 제조한 ADC12 알루미늄 합금의 물성 향상 및 진공 열처리 효과

We report structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of diecast ADC12 aluminum alloys characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, thermal conductivity (λ), Vickers hardness (Hv), and stress-strain measurements. We also studied the effect of post-annealing performed in a vacuum atmosphere on the mechanical properties of diecast ADC12 alloys. EDX and XRD results revealed that Al2Cu and AlCu3 grains are formed, well dispersed in Al base and highly crystalline. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 307.9 ± 9.1 MPa and elongation of 2.98 ± 0.62 % were estimated. λ was 129.3 ± 0.27 W/m·K and Hv was approximately 130. Both values were significantly higher than the reported values. At annealing temperatures ranging from 25 to 200℃, UTS and Hv values remained constant, while as the annealing temperature increased to 500℃, these values gradually decreased. This is because stabilization of the microstructure improves toughness and ductility. 최적의 조건에서ADC12 알루미늄 합금을 다이캐스팅 기법으로 제조하여 구조적, 기계적, 열적 성질을 연구하였다. 또한 진공에서 후속 열처리한 ADC12 알루미늄 합금의 기계적 물성 변화를 규명하였다. 방사광 X-선 회절 및 energy dispersive X-선 화학조성 분석법을 통하여 ADC12 합금은 알루미늄 기저에 알루미늄과 구리의 화합물인 Al2Cu 및 AlCu3 상이 결정질 형태로 분포하고 있음을 규명하였다. 대표적인 기계적 물성값인 인장강도와 연신율은 각각 307.9 ± 9.1 MPa와 2.98 ± 0.62 %이다. 기존 보고보다 우수한 열전도도(129.3 ± 0.27 W/m·K)와 비이커스 경도값(Hv = 130)을 나타낸다. 후속 열처리 결과, 200℃까지는 기계적 물성치가 일정하게 유지되었으나, 이후 500℃까지 열처리 온도를 증가시킬 경우에는 인장강도와 비이커스 경도가 점진적으로 감소하였다. 이는 열처리 도중 미세조직이 안정화되면서 인성과 연성이 향상되었기 때문이다.
Laparoscopic Splenectomy in Two Dogs Using SonicisionTM

A 10-year-old, 24.1 kg, intact female Siberian husky dog (case 1) and 11-year-old, 5.0 kg, intact male Shihtzudog (case 2) presented with chief complaints of polydipsia, anorexia, vomiting and exercise intolerance (case 1)and stranguria (case 2). Splenic nodule (case 1) and mass (case 2) were identified in these patients throughultrasonographic examination. Laparoscopic splenectomy was conducted for the histopathologic evaluation. In addition,laparoscopic ovariohysterectomy, liver biopsy (case 1) and castration (case 2) were performed for treatment or diagnosisof primary symptoms. Under general anesthesia, 5 mm three-portal access laparoscopic splenectomy was performedusing the SonicisionTM equipment. The dogs were rotated onto right lateral recumbency. The spleen was elevated usinga fan or goldfinger retractor, which revealed the ventral aspect of the spleen. Resection of vessels was started at thecaudal aspect of the spleen using the SonicisionTM. The excised spleen was removed from the abdominal cavity usinga 12 mm endo-bag via the enlarged instrument portal. There were no post-operative complications in either patient. Histopathologic diagnoses were splenic lymphoid hyperplasia (case 1) and splenic nodular hyperplasia (case 2). Basedon our experience, laparoscopic splenectomy is sufficient to replace traditional splenectomy in small animal surgery. The use of the SonicisionTM could be a novel surgical technique for three-portal laparoscopic splenectomy, regardlessof patient size.

The expression of immunogenic markers after differentiation of umbilical cord blood (UCB)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) has been poorly investigated and requires extensive in vitro and in vivo testing for clinical application. The expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) classes on UCB-derived MSC was tested by Fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis and immunocytochemical staining. The undifferentiated MSC were moderately positive for HLA-ABC, but almost completely negative for HLA-DR. The MSC differentiated to chondrocytes expressed neither HLA-ABC nor HLA-DR. The proliferation of MSC was not significantly affected by the allogeneic lymphocytes stimulated with concanavalin A. The responder lymphocytes showed no significant decrease in proliferation in the presence of the MSC, but the apoptosis rate of the lymphocytes was increased in the presence of MSC. Taken together, these findings indicate that UCB-derived MSC differentiated to chondrocytes expressed less HLA class I and no class II antigens. The MSC showed an immunomodulatory effect on the proliferation and apoptosis of allogeneic lymphocytes. These data suggest that the differentiated and undifferentiated allogeneic MSC derived from umbilical cord blood can be a useful candidate for allogeneic cell therapy and transplantation without a major risk of rejection.
