        Characterization of Nutritional Value for Twenty-one Pork Muscles

        A study was conducted to evaluate nutritional value for twenty-one pork muscles. Ten market-weight crossbred pigs (five gilts and five barrows) were used for evaluating proximate chemical composition, cholesterol, total iron, calorie and fatty acid contents. As preliminary analysis revealed no noticeable sex effect, pooled data from both sexes were used for the final analysis. M. rectus femoris had the highest moisture content, while m. latissimus dorsi was lowest in moisture content (p<0.05). Protein content was highest for m. longissimus dorsi and lowest for m. supraspinatus (p<0.05). The tensor fasciae and latissimus dorsi muscles contained the highest intramuscular fat (p<0.05), while rectus femoris, adductor and vastus lateralis were lowest in intramuscular fat content. When simple correlations between chemical values were computed for the pooled dataset from all muscles, intramuscular fat had significant (p<0.05) negative linear relationships with moisture (r = -0.85) and protein (r = -0.51) contents. Calorie levels were not significantly affected by fat content, while rectus femoris and latissimus dorsi muscles showed lowest and highest calorie contents, respectively (p<0.05). Polyunsaturated fatty acid content was highest (p<0.05) for both m. adductor and m. rectus femoris, while it was lowest for m. longissimus dorsi. Collectively, the current study identified a large amount of variation in nutritional characteristics between pork muscles, and the data can be used for the development of muscle-specific strategies to improve eating quality of meats and meat products.

        완전 이식형 인공중이의 국내 개발현황

        인구의 고령화가 진행되면서 난청인구는 증가하고 있으며 난청자들은 일반적으로 공기전도형 보청기를 사용하고 있다. 이러한 보청기는 미용문제와 귀 폐쇄감 및 하울링 현상 등으로 인해 난청자들이 기피하고 있으며, 이를 극복하기 위한 방법으로 완전히 은닉할 수 있고 음향 피드백의 영향이 적은 완전 이식형 인공중이 시스템이 전 세계적으로 주목받고 있다. 경북대 첨단 감각기능 회복장치연구센터(Advanced Research Center for Recovery of Human Sensibility, ACRHS)는 보건복지부의 지원과 (주)파이컴의 참여 하에, 약 4년간의 연구 결과로 차동 전자 트랜스듀서를 기반으로 하는 완전 이식형 인공중이 시스템의 시제품 ACROHS-1.5와 그 주변장치로 무선 제어기 및 무선 충전장치를 각각 구현하고 실험을 통해 평가하였다. 현재는 제작된 시제품을 기반으로 한국식품의약품안전청 (KFDA)의 시험을 받기 위한 준비과정에 있다. Recently, persons who have difficulty in hearing are increase as aging of population, conventional hearing aids are generally used by them. In contrast with conventional hearing aids, implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) with the advantages of complete concealment, occlusion of ear, and reduction of acoustic feedback are remarkable methods to overcome difficulties of people who have from moderate hearing loss to severe hearing loss. At Advanced Research Center for Recovery of Human Sensibility (ACRHS) in Kyungpook National University (KNU) under the auspices of Korean Ministry of Health & Welfare (KMHW) and PHICOM Co, as the products of their research during 4 years, fully implantable middle ear hearing device (ACROHS-1.5) based on a differential floating mass transducer (DFMT), an implantable microphone, a remote controller, and a wireless charger have been implemented. Each prototype has been evaluated through several experiments. In the present time, we are going to prepare clinical trials for approval of Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA).

      • Effects of B<sub>2</sub>H<sub>6</sub> flow rate and deposition time on superconducting properties of MgB<sub>2</sub>/Hastelloy tapes

        We have investigated the influence of B<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>6</SUB> gas mixture flow rate and deposition time on superconducting properties of MgB<SUB>2</SUB> tapes. The MgB<SUB>2</SUB> tapes are fabricated by growing the MgB<SUB>2</SUB> films on Hastelloy tapes at a temperature of 520<SUP>o</SUP>C by using hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) technique. The MgB<SUB>2</SUB> tapes exhibit transition temperature (T<SUB>c</SUB>) of around 39K and is found to be unaffected by the gas flow rate but shows a slight dependence on the deposition time. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the MgB<SUB>2</SUB> tapes are polycrystalline in nature. MgB<SUB>2</SUB> grains of various orientations are observed in the microstructures of the tapes taken by scanning electron microscopy. We obtained much higher J<SUB>c</SUB> values over the wide field range for MgB<SUB>2</SUB> tapes grown on Hastelloy than the previously reported data on other metallic substrates, such as Cu, SS, and Nb. The critical current density (J<SUB>c</SUB>) of about 10<SUP>5</SUP>A/cm<SUP>2</SUP> at 5K under 3T is obtained for the MgB<SUB>2</SUB> tape of thickness 2μm. These results suggest that the thick MgB<SUB>2</SUB>/Hastelloy tapes with high J<SUB>c</SUB> values deposited under controlled growth conditions of HPCVD could be useful in high-field applications.

        In this paper, the sample chamber for multichannel electrolyte analyzing system was designed and the correction algorithm for interference among samples was proposed. The sample chamber was designed to replace the ISFET sensor more easier. The principles of design were the structural independency of each channel and the shield of sample solution from air contact. The correction algorithm could reject the interference effect of mixed sample solution and compensate the voltage difference between single electrolyte solution and mixed electrolyte solution. To approve the proposed algorithm, the several experiments were carried out under the condition of mixed samples. We acknowledged that with our proposed algorithm, the sensor output influenced by mixed electrolyte solution was improved with measurement accuracy.

        지엽류 급여가 임신중인 흑염소에 있어서 유산 발생에 미치는 영향

        지엽류 급여가 임신한 흑염소의 유산 발생에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 5∼6세인 임신 3∼4개월된 흑염소 20두를 처리구별로 각각 5두씩 배치하여 소나무지엽, 소나무지엽 사일리지, 잣나무발효지엽 그리고 참나무지엽 사일리지를 급여한 결과는 다음과 같다. 일일 조사료 섭취량은 참나무지엽 사일리지 0.36㎏, 소나무지엽 0.28㎏, 소나무지엽 사일리지 0.24㎏ 그리고 발효지엽 0.14㎏으로 발효지엽 급여구가 낮았다. 지엽류 내의 유해균 중 Salmonella와 Fungi는 소나무 지엽류에서는 나타나지 않았으나 참나무지엽 사일리지에서는 각각 7.93×10^3, 11.0×10^1cfu/g로 나타났으며 E. Coli도 11.67×10^1cfu/g로 소나무류 지엽보다 훨씬 높게 나타났으나 (P<.05) 유산발생과는 상관이 없었다. 유산발생율은 발효지엽, 소나무지엽 사일리지 그리고 소나무지엽 급여구에서 각각 60%, 40% 그리고 20%로 나타났으며 참나무지엽 사일리지구는 유산이 발생되지 않았다. 혈청 중 progesterone 농도는 모든 처리구가 분만 4주전까지는 높은 수준이었으나 분만일에는 급감하는 경향이었고 estradiol 농도는 분만시에 감소하였으며 cortisol 농도는 정상 분만한 참나무지엽 사일리지 급여구가 다른 처리구보다 분만당일에 낮은 경향이었다. 이상의 결과를 고려할 때 임신 흑염소에 소나무지엽류를 급여하면 유산이 발생할 가능성이 있음을 제시해 준다. In order to investigate the effect of feeding browses on the incidence of abortion in pregnant Korean native female goats, 20 pregnant does(3∼4 month) were used as experimental animal and they grouped 4 treatments with 5 heads according to experimental diets. Each group was fed pine browse, pine browse silage, fermented pine browse, or oak browse silage. Browses intake a day was 0.36㎏ for oak browse silage, 028㎏ for pine browse, 0.24㎏ for pine browse silage, and 0.14㎏ for fermented pine browse. Salmonella and Fungi were not found in pine browses but they were found in oak browse silage in the amount of 7.93×10^3 and 11.1×10^1 cfu/g, respectively. E. Coliwas found 11.67×10^1 cfu/g in oak browse silage. The incidence of abortion was 60% for fermented pine browse, 40% for pine browse silage, and 20% for pine browse feeding. Abortion did not occur by feeding oak browse silage. Progesterone concentration was similar each other regardless of normal delivery or abortion at delivery day but the concentration of estradiol was higher for normal delivery, concentration of cortisol was decreased until the delivery day in normal but increased in abortion does. The results were suggested that if pine browses are fed to pregnant Korean native goats, abortion was likely to occur.

      • Design and Fabrication of Integrated Fabry-Perot Type Color Reflector for Reflective Displays

        <P>A Fabry-Perot type integrated color reflector, with red/blue/green colors as subpixels, was designed and fabricated with Si substrate. Ag films were used as reflective mirror layers, SiO2 films were used as Fabry-Perot cavity layers and W films were used as partially reflective layers for the cavity. To minimize the effects of the thickness variation of the oxide cavity layers, the structure of the color reflector was optimized, and the differential deposition scheme was devised and applied in the fabrication process. The integrated color reflector was successfully fabricated with the proposed fabrication scheme. The measured white reflectance was >45% in the visible spectrum range and similar to 49% at 550 nm wavelength. The fabricated reflector had moderate color gamut of 17% of the National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard and it showed very high white reflectivity. The fabricated color reflector is expected to be applicable to reflective displays.</P>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A new structure for a switchable mirror device based on reversible electrodeposition is proposed. This device does not contain Cu ions in the electrolyte and adapts a counter electrode. The feasibility of the device was evaluated with a WO<SUB>3</SUB> film, which is a well-known electrochromic material, as a counter electrode. Even in the absence of Cu ions, the WO<SUB>3</SUB> film facilitates a clean erase feature in the device. Furthermore, using a pre-deposited Ag film as a working electrode, Ag deposition can be driven at a substantially lower voltage than that in conventional devices. Moreover the deposition current decreases with the progress of Ag deposition, and stops after completion of the deposition process. The results clearly indicate that the tri-bromine ion, which makes the self-erasing circulation, is not generated during Ag deposition process. The new switchable mirror shows excellent bistability and size scale-up is possible because it does not consume continuous current in the mirror state.       • Comprehensive mutational analysis of <i>BRCA1/BRCA2</i> for Korean breast cancer patients: evidence of a founder mutation

        <P>The <I>BRCA1</I> and <I>BRCA2</I> genes are the strongest susceptibility genes identified for breast cancer worldwide. However, <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> have been incompletely investigated due to their large size and the genomic rearrangements that occasionally occur within them. Here we performed a comprehensive mutational analysis for <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> in 206 Korean patients with breast cancer.</P><P>We analyzed all exons and flanking regions of <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> by direct sequencing and screened deletions or duplications involving <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. We reconstructed haplotypes using intragenic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to investigate the possibility of a founder effect among recurrent mutations. In our series, 38 patients (18.4%) had one or more <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> mutations including 10 novel ones. Three additional patients carried novel distinct unclassified variants with potentially harmful effects. No large deletions or duplications involving <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> were identified in our series. Haplotype analyses and allele separation suggested that the most frequent mutation in Koreans, <I>BRCA2</I>:c.7480C>T, might have originated from a common ancestor. <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> mutations were more frequent in a group with family history, bilateral cancer or multiple site cancer than in a group without the risk factors described or an unknown risk group. In contrast, mutation frequencies in the early-onset cancer group were not higher than in the unknown risk group.</P><P>Our results will be helpful to understand the mutation spectrum in <I>BRCA1</I>/<I>BRCA2</I> genes and establish a genetic screening strategy. In addition, this study suggests the possibility of the first true founder mutation of <I>BRCA1/BRCA2</I> identified in the Korean population.</P>

        Diagnostic Application of an Extensive Gene Panel for Leber Congenital Amaurosis with Severe Genetic Heterogeneity

        Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder and the most severe form of inherited retinal dystrophy. We report results of a diagnostic application of an extensive gene panel composed of 204 retinal dystrophy-related genes and discuss its feasibility as a diagnostic tool. Nineteen unrelated LCA patients were included in the study: two patients for validation purposes of our gene panel, 15 previously analyzed patients with no identified mutations, and two previously unanalyzed patients. Genetic diagnosis for each patient was conducted according to whether the variants were consistent with the known inheritance pattern of each gene. We identified two heterozygous or homozygous pathogenic variants in seven of 19 patients. On the basis of mutation information, clinical features were re-reviewed, and clinical diagnoses for two patients were revised from LCA to LCA-related disorders. In addition, a coverage simulation was performed to determine the optimal depth of coverage of the gene panel. Using our gene panel, we diagnosed LCA and LCA-related disorders in 36.8% of patients and one or more deleterious variants or variants of unknown significance in 89.5% of patients. Molecular diagnosis using this extensive gene panel is expected to facilitate diagnosis of retinal dystrophy and help provide proper treatment to patients, although further analyses is needed for a complete clinical validation.
