Risk of Osteoporotic Fracture in Patients with Breast Cancer: Meta-Analysis

Background: The fracture risk induced by anti-estrogen therapy in patients with breast cancer remains controversial. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis and systematic review to evaluate the risk of osteoporotic fracture in patients with breast cancer. Methods: A systematic search was performed to identify studies that included any osteoporotic fracture (hip fracture and vertebral fracture) in patients breast cancer. Main outcome measures were occurrence and risk of osteoporotic fractures including hip and vertebral fractures in patients and controls. Results: A systematic search yielded a total of 4 studies that included osteoporotic fracture outcomes in patients with breast cancer. Meta-analysis showed a higher risk of osteoporotic fracture in patients with breast cancer. Analysis of these 4 studies involving a total of 127,722 (23,821 cases and 103,901 controls) patients showed that the incidence of osteoporotic fractures was higher in the breast cancer group than in the control group. The pooled estimate of crude relative risk for osteoporotic fracture was 1.35 (95% confidence interval, 1.29–1.42; P<0.001). Conclusions: Although studies were limited by a small number, results suggested a possible association between anti-estrogen therapy and increased risk of osteoporotic fractures in patients with breast cancer.

Objective-Hemodialysis patients may have psychological distress and reduced quality of life (QoL) related to chronic physical health problems. Genetic polymorphisms associated with reduced QoL in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between genetic polymorphisms and variation in health-related QoL in Korean hemodialysis patients. Methods-The 36-item Short-Form Health Survey and the Korean Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to assess health-related QoL and psychological distress, respectively. Twenty hundred and five clinically stable patients from 6 hemodialysis centers have participated with informed consents. Sociodemographic factors, clinical factors, and genotypes of serotonin 1A receptor, brain-derived neurotrophic factors, and glucocorticoid receptor were assessed. Independent t-tests, correlation analyses, multiple regression analyses were performed for statistical analyses. Results-The serotonin 1A receptor CC genotype group showed significantly higher physical and mental QoL levels than those with the GG/GC genotypes. In the final linear regression analysis, serotonin 1A receptor CC genotype was significantly associated with positive physical and mental QoL levels. Conclusion-Serotonin 1A receptor polymorphism, as well as age and depression, were significantly associated with mental and physical QoL in hemodialysis patients. Functional activity in the serotonin receptor system may have a modulating effect on health-related QoL in hemodialysis patients.

Nasotracheal intubation is valuable during intra-oral surgery. A common complication of this technique is epistaxis. We experi- enced a case of middle turbinate fracture which showed no immediate signs of fracture such as bleeding or avulsed particles. Two months later, it was discovered in the form of nasal obstruction with a mass-like lesion. Symptoms associated with traumatic intu- bation usually develop during surgery, and it is rare to be found a long time after surgery. We will review the anatomical and techni- cal aspects for safe nasotracheal intubation.

자동차 플라스틱 부품의 내후성에 대한 신뢰도 확보는 감성품질, 내구품질이 우수한 자동차를 만들기 위해서는 확보해야 하는 기술이다. 국산 자동차에 대한 초기품질은 세계 최고 수준에 이르고 있지만, 촉진내후성에 대한 내구신뢰도 수준은 중하위권에 머무르고 있는 실정으로 내후성에 대한 신뢰도 확보는 고객의 감성지수를 만족시키는 필수적인 요소라 할 수 있다. 본 고에서는 촉진내후성시험의 배경과 함께 촉진내후성시험을 수행하고 있는 군산대학교 자동차부품기술혁신센터(KATIC)의 촉진내후성시험기 및 적용사례를 기술하였다. 관련된 촉진내후성을 평가하는 방법과 관련 장비들은 향후 자동차 플라스틱, 고무 부품 등 고분자 재료를 이용한 부품 개발 및 평가에 활용할 수 있을 것이다. In this article, weatherability test technology for automotive parts is presented. Weatherability test investigates the degradations by the sunshine, rain and snow, temperature and humidity, Ozone and so on. These tests are categorized in two types. Firstly, outdoor exposure test that is requested the long term and large outdoor test facility. Secondly, acceleration test that is performed in laboratory with the similarly natural conditions. Recently, accelerated test is more often performed to evaluate the weatherability of the automotive parts in terms of the cost reduction and development time. This article is described the test equipments and procedures, which are used in Kunsan National University Automotive Technology Innovation Center(KATIC), and showed the performed test samples. Above described test technology is helpful to the automotive parts developments and enterprise’s competitions.
