      • Genetic structure of Korea Brassica rapa core collection based on Mariner transposon display

        We have identified ATTIRTA1 transposon, a kind of mariner-type DNA transposon from Brassica rapa genome. A total of 811 inverted-terminal repeat, ITR consisting of the both terminal on ATTIRTA1 transposon were found from B. rapa v1.1 sequence. Among them 616 ITR were paired by two in each transposon, indicating three quarters of the transposon exists in original form. Around 10 percentage of the transposon, 82 ITR was located in gene, expecially only in intron. Using these ATTRRTA1, we developed a display system modified from AFLP technique and applied for this system to analyze genetic diversity of Korea Brassica rapa core collection. The collection includes 220 accessions representing the different morphotypes and geographical origin. The analysis of population structure revealed five subgroups and the clustering patterns matched well with their morphological traits. ATTIRTA1 transposon display seems useful marker system for studying genetic relationships. Presently we have profiled the components and contents of glucosinolate in the core collection to analyze genome wide association. This collection will be helpful to identify agriculturally desirable traits from other supspecies.

        Uncertainty assessment for a towed underwater stereo PIV system by uniform flow measurement

        The present study aims to assess test uncertainty assessment method of nominal wake field measurement by a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system in a towing tank. The systematic uncertainty of the SPIV system was estimated from repeated uniform flow measurements. In the uniform flow measurement case, time interval between image frames and uniform flow speed were varied to examine the effects of particle displacement and flow around the SPIV system on the systematic standard uncertainty. The random standard uncertainty was assessed by repeating nominal wake field measurements and the estimated random standard uncertainty was compared with that of laser Doppler velocimetry. The test uncertainty assessment method was applied to nominal wake measurement tests of a very large crude oil carrier model ship. The nominal wake measurement results were compared with existing experimental database by other measurement methods, with its assessed uncertainty.

      • Competitive grain boundary segregation of phosphorus and carbon governs delamination crack in a ferritic steel

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The present study aims at unveiling the influence of trace amounts of phosphorus on the macro-scale delamination in a ferritic steel. Two different steels with trace amounts of phosphorus were examined to reveal the cause: One was made by long-time high temperature holding to maximize the phosphorus segregation, and the other one was made by short-time high temperature holding to minimize the phosphorus segregation. The atom probe results at the grain boundaries ahead of the delamination-related cracks provide a strong evidence that phosphorus-enrichment and carbon-depletion for the long-time high temperature holding induces a larger degree of delamination as compared to the short-time high temperature holding. Reasons for the different segregation tendency were discussed by correlating the isothermal holding time at high temperature and the competitive segregation between phosphorus and carbon.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Trace amounts of P in the steel cause delamination in case of Lt-high Temp. holding. </LI> <LI> Anisotropic microstructure did not affect the delamination in this study. </LI> <LI> Crack-linked GBs in Lt-high Temp. steel had higher P and lower C segregation. </LI> <LI> Crack-interrupt GBs in St-high Temp. steel had lower P and higher C segregation. </LI> <LI> Competitive segregation controlled by high Temp. holding time affects delamination. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical Abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Page kidney refers to the phenomenon of hypertension secondary to long-standing compression of renal parenchyma caused by renal subcapsular collection. The most common cause of renal subcapsular collection is a hematoma which usually occurs after a history of blunt trauma. A 42-year-old female patient who received botulinum toxin injection in her back during chiropractic care was admitted to the emergency room with sudden bilateral flank pain and hypertension. The computed tomography (CT) images demonstrated the presence of bilateral subcapsular renal hematoma. The patient was treated conservatively and recovered well. The follow up CT images showed markedly resolved bilateral hematoma.

        Origin of Hysteresis in CH<sub>3</sub> NH<sub>3</sub> PbI<sub>3</sub> Perovskite Thin Films

        <P>Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells are attracting the attention of researchers owing to the high level of performance they exhibit in photovoltaic device applications. However, the attainment of an even higher level of performance is hindered by their anomalous current-voltage (I-V) hysteresis behavior. Even though experimental and theoretical studies have suggested that the perovskite materials may have a ferroelectric nature, it is still far from being fully understood. In this study, the origin of the hysteresis behavior in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite thin films is investigated. The behavior of ferroelectricity using piezoresponse force microscopy is first examined. Then, by comparing the scan-rate-dependent nano/macroscopic I-V curves, it is found that ion migration assisted by the grain boundaries is a dominant origin of I-V hysteresis from a macroscopic viewpoint. Consequently, the observations suggest that, even though ferroelectricity exists in the CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite materials, ion migration primarily contributes to the macroscopic I-V hysteresis. The presented results can provide fundamental guidelines to the resolution of hysteresis issues in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials.</P>

        First Korean case of factor V Leiden mutation in pregnant woman with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss

        Thrombophilia refers to inherited or acquired hemostatic disorders that result in a predisposition to blood clot formation. When combined with the hypercoagulable state that is characteristic of pregnancy, there is an increased risk of severe and recurrent pregnancy complications. Activated protein C resistance caused by factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation is known to be the most common cause of inherited thrombophilia in Caucasian population. FVL mutation has been related to pregnancy complications associated with hypercoagulation, e.g. miscarriage, intrauterine fetal demise, placental abruption, and intrauterine growth retardation. Although the FVL mutation is easily detected using molecular DNA techniques, patients who are heterozygous for this disorder often remain asymptomatic until they develop a concurrent prothrombotic condition. Because there are potentially serious effects of FVL mutation for pregnancy, and because effective treatment strategies exist, early detection and treatment of this condition might be considered.

      • Growth-promoting activity of Hominis Placenta extract on regenerating sciatic nerve1

        <P>AIM: Extract of Hominis Placenta (HP) has been used in oriental medicine as an agent for improving physiological function. The present study was conducted to investigate whether HP treatment in an experimental sciatic nerve injury animal model produces growth-promoting effects on regenerating peripheral nerve fibers after injury. METHODS: After HP was injected into a sciatic nerve injury site, changes in protein levels were analyzed in the regenerating nerve area by Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining analyses. For quantitative assessment of axonal regeneration, a retrograde tracing technique was used to identify the neuronal cell bodies corresponding to regenerating axons, and the extent of neurite outgrowth in cultured dorsal root ganglia (DRG) sensory neurons prepared from animals that had experienced a sciatic nerve crush injury 7 d before neuron collection was analyzed. RESULTS: Induction levels of axonal growth-associated protein (GAP-43) in the injured sciatic nerves were elevated by HP treatment. HP treatment also upregulated cell division cycle 2 (Cdc2) protein levels in the distal stump of the injured sciatic nerve. Induced Cdc2 protein was detected in Schwann cells, suggesting that Cdc2 kinase activity may be involved in the growth-promoting activity of regenerating axons via Schwann cell proliferation. Cell body measurement by retrograde tracing indicated that HP treatment produced significant increases in regenerating motor axons. Finally, HP treatment of cultured DRG sensory neurons significantly increased neurite arborization and elongation. CONCLUSION: HP promotes the regeneration of injured sciatic axons by upregulating the synthesis of regeneration-related protein factors such as GAP-43 and Cdc2.</P>

        Department of Parasitology, College of Medicine Seoul National University Clonorchiasis is the most important endemic disease in Korea, and this disease has been known to be one of public health concern in many areas of southern part of Korea. During the last fifty years, several surveys on the prevalence among the Korean population have been carried out by various investigators, although the general distribution and prevalences of clonorchiasis are not yet clearly determined. The present studies have been undertaken to the epidemiological and clinical aspects on the clonor-chiasis in several endemic areas in southern part of Korea. The authors have attempted to use skin test and stool examination. Fecal specimens were collected from villages including males, females and children in all inhabitants of Bul-Ani 1-Ku, Kim-Hae Eup and Karak Myun, Kim-Hae Gun located in the Delta of Naktong river basin which is one of the most important endemic areas of clonorchiasis. Stool specimens from Chil-Sung Myun, Gue-San Gun were also examined. The examinations of the feces for eggs of C. sinensis were made by using the cellophane thick smear method and the intensity of the Clonorchis infection was estimated by the Stoll's egg court. The results are as follow: 1) Among the surveyed area, the prevalence rate of Clonorchis infection was shown as 69.0 per cent in Bul-Am 1-Ku, Kim-Hae Eup, 82.7 per cent in Karak Myun, Kim-Hae Gun, and 62.1 per cent in Chil-Sung Myun, Gue-San Gun. 2) In the highly endemic area, there is no significant difference among the incidences of Clonorchis infection by sex and age. 3) The mean EPG count of Clonorchis infection in the surveyed area was found higher among the higher age group. 4) The degree of the intensity of Clonorchis infection by EPG counts in the surveyed areas was evenly distributed to the medium, heavy and very heavy infection groups in the above 20 years old. 5) The endemicity of C. sinensis in the surveyed area was applied tLe probit analysis and obtained regression equation. 6) The criterion for positive intradermal test was different in each surveyed areas, and also there was observed negative intradermal test in some considerable cases of the light infection group of clonorchiasis. 7) There were observed the higher the intensity of the Clonorchis infection, the higher the leukocytosis and eosinophilia in the blood picture, and also the values of blood biochemistry, i. e. cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase, SGOT, SGPT were elevated by the higher intensity of infection. 8) The detailed clinical symptoms according to the intensity of Clonorchis infection and the correlation between the period of infection and the intensity of Clonorchis infection were discussed.
