CO2환기제어는 신축건물에서 흔히 사용되고 있지만, 기존의 건물에서는 그 적용 예가 흔하지는 않다. 아마도 개보수라는 것이 가능하다고 여겨지는 자원절감이나 이익에 대한 방대한 기록이 요구되기 때문이며 게다가 제어에 관한 개보수는 복잡하다는 인식에 기인한다. 공교롭게도, 에너지 사용 패턴에 대하 명확한 기록이 있는 기존의 건물에 가장 에너지절약적인 기회가 많다는 사실이다. 이 기고문에서는 기존 건물의 CO2개보수에 관하여 그 성능 평가에 대한 방법론을 제시하고 있으며, 현장 평가와 이 방법론을 적용한 A-등급 사무소 건물에서의 개보수를 통한 성능개선에 관하여 분석하고 있다. 대상은 첨단 DDC시스템이 있는 미국 환경청의 에너지스타 등급을 획득한 건물이다.
Type VI secretion is a major virulence determinant in <i>Burkholderia mallei</i>

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P> <I>Burkholderia mallei</I> is a host‐adapted pathogen and a category B biothreat agent. Although the <I>B. mallei</I> VirAG two‐component regulatory system is required for virulence in hamsters, the virulence genes it regulates are unknown. Here we show with expression profiling that overexpression of <I>virAG</I> resulted in transcriptional activation of ∼60 genes, including some involved in capsule production, actin‐based intracellular motility, and type VI secretion (T6S). The 15 genes encoding the major sugar component of the homopolymeric capsule were up‐expressed > 2.5‐fold, but capsule was still produced in the absence of <I>virAG</I>. Actin tail formation required <I>virAG</I> as well as <I>bimB</I>, <I>bimC</I> and <I>bimE</I>, three previously uncharacterized genes that were activated four‐ to 15‐fold when VirAG was overproduced. Surprisingly, actin polymerization was found to be dispensable for virulence in hamsters. In contrast, genes encoding a T6S system were up‐expressed as much as 30‐fold and mutations in this T6S gene cluster resulted in strains that were avirulent in hamsters. SDS‐PAGE and mass spectrometry demonstrated that BMAA0742 was secreted by the T6S system when <I>virAG</I> was overexpressed. Purified His‐tagged BMAA0742 was recognized by glanders antiserum from a horse, a human and mice, indicating that this Hcp‐family protein is produced <I>in vivo</I> during infection.</P>

<P>The impact of electron scattering at surfaces and grain boundaries in nanometric polycrystalline tungsten (W) films was studied. A series of polycrystalline W films ranging in thickness from 10 to 310 nm and lateral grain size from 74 to 133 nm were prepared on thermally oxidized Si. The Fuchs-Sondheimer surface-scattering model and Mayadas-Shatzkes grain-boundary scattering model were employed for quantitative analyses. Predictions from the theoretical models were found to deviate systematically from the experimental data. Possible reasons for the failure of the theoretical models to describe the experimental data are explored. Finally, a discussion of the crucial features lacking from existing models is presented, along with possible avenues for improving the models to result in better agreement with experimental data. A Molecular Approach to Studies of Growth and Development

The molecular mechanisms underlying control of growth and differentiation in higher plant cells remain unknown. In order to systematically isolate and functionally characterize genes from higher plant cells involved in control of growth and differentiation, we have applied both conventional and novel strategies. We have used modern microanalytical techniques to isolate and study various auxin-binding proteins. We shall discuss the molecular structure of different putative auxin-receptor genes from Z. mays and A. thaliana. Using homology probing we have identified and isolated a series of genes involved in plant signalling processes including members of the RAS-gene family. The isolation of other genes relies on the study of different procaryotic genes known to have a marked effect on plant differentiation. These are T-DNA linked genes from A. tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes as well as genes from Rhizobiacae. Finally various gene tagging approaches will be discussed that are presently used to identify and isolated genes involved in developmental control of plants.

We investigated the distribution of commensal staphylococcal species and determined the prevalence of multi-drug resistance in healthy cats and dogs. Risk factors associated with the carriage of multi-drug resistant strains were explored. Isolates from 256 dogs and 277 cats were identified at the species level using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry. The diversity of coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CNS) was high, with 22 species in dogs and 24 in cats. Multi-drug resistance was frequent (17%) and not always associated with the presence of the mecA gene. A stay in a veterinary clinic in the last year was associated with an increased risk of colonisation by multi-drug resistant Staphylococci (OR = 2.4, 95% CI: 1.1∼5.2, p value LRT = 0.04). When identifying efficient control strategies against antibiotic resistance, the presence of mechanisms other than methicillin resistance and the possible role of CNS in the spread of resistance determinants should be considered. <P>In this paper, we present a novel device which comprises a DFB laser with electroabsorption modulators integrated on both sides. This integrated chip provides two independently modulated optical outputs from a single laser source and thus cuts the required number of chips for multilane applications in half. Both outputs can be simultaneously operated with 56 Gb/s NRZ leading to 112 Gb/s from a single chip. The performance of the chip is further tested in an optical PAM4 generation experiment. The two NRZ modulated outputs are combined with a polarization combiner to generate an optical PAM4 signal which on the receiver side is measured with a polarization insensitive photodetector.</P>
