<P>In this paper, a CMOS analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a 6-bit 100MSPS at 1.8V is described. The architecture of the proposed ADC is based on a folding type with a resistive interpolation technique for low power consumption. To reduce the power consumption, a folder reduction technique to decrease the number of folding blocks (NFB) by half of the conventional ones, an averaging folder technique, and a compensated resistive interpolation technique are proposed. Further, an autoswitching encoder for efficient digital processing is also presented. With the clock speed of 100MSPS, the ADC achieves an effective resolution bandwidth (ERBW) of 50MHz, while consuming only 4.5mW of power. The measured result of figure-of-merit (FoM) is 0.93 [pJ/convstep]. The active chip occupies an area of 0.28mm<SUP>2</SUP> in 0.18μm CMOS technology.</P>

The study investigated the dietary effects of medicinal herbs extract and multiple probiotics mixture on the growth performance, innate immune response and antibacterial activity of nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. Tilapia were divided in four groups. The first is a fish group fed a basal diet added with 40% medicinal herbs extract (MHE). The second is a fish group fed a basal diet supplied with $2{\times}10^8CFU/g$ of 2 Bacillus sp, 2 Lactobacillus sp and 2 Yeast sp, respectively (PB). The third group was fed with a mixture of probiotics (2 Bacillus sp, 2 Lactobacillus sp and 2 Yeast sp) with the medicinal herbs extract added in basal diet (MHE+PB). The fourth group was fed only a basal diet (C). In a non-specific immune parameters analysis, respiratory burst activity, lysozyme activity, phagocytic activity (PA), alternative complement pathway activity ($ACH_{50}$) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were significantly (p<0.05) increased in the group MHE+PB compared to other groups. Both PB and MHE groups showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in respiratory burst activity, lysozyme activity compared to the control C group, whereas no significant differences were observed in PA, $ACH_{50}$ and SOD activity compared to the control group. In challenging test, fish were administered with Edwardsiella tarda (E. tarda) on 30 days after feeding with each experimental diet and viable E. tarda cell reduction was checked over 21 days post injection. MHE+PB group showed a significantly (p<0.05) reduced E. tarda cells compared to other groups. No significant antibacterial difference (p>0.05) was observed between PB and MHE only treated group. Compared to the control, a significant antibacterial difference (p<0.05) appeared in PB but not in MHE (p>0.05). The results suggest that the probiotics and MHE mixture could be utilized as an alternative to antibiotics in the control of fish diseases caused by E. tarda.
Meta-analysis identifies a <i>MECOM</i> gene as a novel predisposing factor of osteoporotic fracture

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Osteoporotic fracture (OF) as a clinical endpoint is a major complication of osteoporosis. To screen for OF susceptibility genes, we performed a genome-wide association study and carried out de novo replication analysis of an East Asian population.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Association was tested using a logistic regression analysis. A meta-analysis was performed on the combined results using effect size and standard errors estimated for each study.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>In a combined meta-analysis of a discovery cohort (288 cases and 1139 controls), three hospital based sets in replication stage I (462 cases and 1745 controls), and an independent ethnic group in replication stage II (369 cases and 560 for controls), we identified a new locus associated with OF (<I>rs784288</I> in the <I>MECOM</I> gene) that showed genome-wide significance (p=3.59×10<SUP>−8</SUP>; OR 1.39). RNA interference revealed that a <I>MECOM</I> knockdown suppresses osteoclastogenesis.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Our findings provide new insights into the genetic architecture underlying OF in East Asians.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Anti-corrosion metal protection of the 2D structured graphene oxide (GO) was investigated in this study using its intrinsic impermeability against reactive molecules stemming from the small geometric pore size and π-orbital repelling fields of graphene. The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of GO sheets on metals is an attractive coating method but the negatively-charged GO only allows the anodic EPD process, which makes it difficult to achieve high-quality coating layers due to gas bubbling and electrochemical oxidation of metals. Thus, we imposed the positive charge to GO sheets using <I>p</I>-phenylenediamine (PPD) and successfully carried out the cathodic EPD in the ethanol aqueous solution. The cathodic EPD of GO on cupper provided a linear growth rate with both deposition time and voltage providing the thickness over 6.0 μm in a void-free and robust feature, which could hardly be achieved by other coating methods. Converting the GO coating to the reduced GO (RGO) by thermal reduction, we successfully increased the RGO adhesion strength up to the highest adhesion grade of 5B in the cross-cut adhesion test. An excellent anti-corrosion protection capability of the developed RGO coating was demonstrated by a decreased corrosion current density and increased corrosion potential in potentiodynamic polarization analysis.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Copy number variations (CNVs) are known risk factors in complex diseases. Array-based approaches have been widely used to detect CNVs, but limitations of array-based CNV detection methods, such as noisy signal and low resolution, have hindered detection of small CNVs.</P> <P>Recently, the development of next-generation sequencing techniques has increased rapidly owing to declines in cost. Particularly, whole-exome sequencing has proved useful for finding causal genes and variants in complex diseases. Because gene copy number may affect expression, CNV genotyping can be very valuable in disease association studies. However, almost all current CNV detection tools consider only two types of CNV genotypes.</P> <P>In this study, we propose a CNV genotype estimation approach using a combination of existing methods. Our approach was comprehensively compared with the customized Agilent array–comparative genomic hybridization. A polycrystalline and low-resistive EuxOy thin film showed remarkable resistive switching phenomena. We have studied structural and electrical properties of EuxOy thin films as RRAM (resistive random access memories) materials. Performing this study, we first deposited EuxOy thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO₂/Si (111) substrates by using EuO target and Radio Frequency (RF) sputter, and then analyzed the structural properties and electrical properties of the fabricated device structures. We suggest that the resistive switching of the EuxOy thin films is explained by oxidation and reduction process of EuxOy thin films.
