N/A The 19 months clinical experiences about 634 cases of laparoscpic surgery were reviewed at Sung-Ae General Hospital from July 1991 to Jan. 1993 The results were as follows; Among 168 cases of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and 5 cases of laparoscopic CBD exploration, we obtained better results with advantages of laparoscopic surgery including few complications, less morbidity and early return to work. In series of 361 cases of laparoscopic appendectomy, we obtained superior results especially in the cases of 1) uncertainty of clinically suspected appendicitis, 2) right lower quadrant pelvic pain without other pathology and 3) patients who wanted early return to work. In series of spontaneous pneumothorax with bullae and recurrent pneumothorax, the thoracoscopic bullectomy was much superior than open bullectomy. The laparoscopic Taylor procedures and laparoscopic bandlysis will be better choice in the management of intractable pain in duodenal ulcer and postoperative adhesion. The diagnostic laparoscopy will be much useful in the blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma.

<B>Purpose: </B>PET-CT is often used to differentiate benign or malignant thyroid incidentalomas. In this retrospective study, we evaluated whether the <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG uptake pattern and PET-CT findings improved accuracy over the standardized uptake value (SUV). <B>Methods:</B> <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG PET-CT was performed on 2,178 subjects from August, 2004, to October, 2007, in Sung-ae Hospital. PET-CT was performed on 806 patients (37%) with suspected or known nonthyroidal cancer and 1,372 healthy subjects (63%) without a previous history of cancer. We investigated the clinical characteristics of patients, history, standardized uptake value (SUV), ultrasonography, and hormone levels in blood. Thyroidal cancer was confirmed by ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration and pathology after thyroid operation. <B>Results:</B> The prevalence of focal thyroid lesions on PET-CT was 8.8% (191/2178). Thyroid cancer confirmation was 7.9% (15/191). The maximum SUV of malignant thyroid lesions were significantly higher than that of benign lesions (7.00±3.08 vs. 4.49±1.84, P<0.001). <B>Conclusion:</B> PET-CT image interpretation that includes 18F-FDG uptake and SUV is better than PET-CT alone for differentiating benign and malignant lesions. Staphylococcus aureus lipase is regarded as a virulence factor. The response of lipase activity to various factors can provide important insights concerning the prevention of S. aureus during meat fermentation. This study was conducted to evaluate the main effects of nutrients used in culture media, and their combined effects on the inhibition of lipase activity and cell growth of pathogenic S. aureus SK1593 isolated from fermented pork meat. A Plackett-Burman design was used to evaluate the main effects of variables, including olive oil, soybean oil, grapeseed oil, sesame oil, CuSO4, MgCl2, KNO3, CaCl2, and KCl. Significant negative effects on lipase activity were detected with soybean oil, grapeseed oil, KNO3, and CaCl2. Additionally, these nutrients were further selected as variables for the investigation of their combined effect on lipase activity, via response surface methodology. In order to confirm the regression model, a situation that only inhibits lipase activity was simulated. The predicted lipase activity and cell growth of the simulated situation were 14.0 U/mL and 9.6 log10 (CFU/mL), respectively, and the estimated value of those in the same medium showed 15.14 U/mL and 9.4 log10(CFU/mL) respectively. The lipase activity of the simulated medium was inhibited approximately 5-fold as compared to the basal medium, but no significant differences in cell counts were noted to exist between the basal and simulated media. These results suggest that soybean oil, grapeseed oil, KNO3, and CaCl2 can be used to inhibit the growth of pathogenic S. aureus during the process of meat fermentation.
TR4 activates FATP1 gene expression to promote lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes

<P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► TR4 enhances fatty acid uptake in 3T3-L1 adipocytes via induction of the FATP1 gene. ► Knockdown of FATP1 abolished TR4-enhanced fatty acid uptake in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. ► TR4 facilitates lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. ► Silencing of TR4 in adipocytes reduced FATP1 expression and lipid accumulation.</P> <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We show that TR4 facilitates lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes via induction of the FATP1 gene. Further study showed that TR4 transactivated FATP1 5′ promoter activity via direct binding to the TR4 responsive element located at the FATP1 5′ promoter region. Constitutive overexpression of TR4 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes resulted in increased lipid accumulation, accompanied by an increase in fatty acid uptake. However, small interfering RNA knockdown of FATP1 abolished TR4-enhanced fatty acid uptake. Moreover, microRNA-mediated silencing of TR4 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes drastically reduced basal FATP1 5′ promoter activity and FATP1 expression with reduced lipid accumulation.</P>
