Background/Aims: The protective effects of vitamin D and calcium on colorectal neoplasms are known. Bone mineral density (BMD) may be a reliable biomarker that reflects the long-term anticancer effect of vitamin D and calcium. This study aimed to evaluate the association between BMD and colorectal adenomas including high-risk adenoma. Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional, case-control study was conducted among participants with average risk of colorectal cancer who underwent BMD and screening colonoscopy between 2015 and 2019. The main outcome was the detection of colorectal neoplasms. The variable under consideration was low BMD (osteopenia/osteoporosis). The logistic regression model included baseline demographics, components of metabolic syndrome, fatty liver disease status, and aspirin and multivitamin use. Results: A total of 2,109 subjects were enrolled. The mean age was 52.1±10.8 years and 42.6% were male. The adenoma detection rate was 43%. Colorectal adenoma and high-risk adenoma were both more prevalent in subjects with low BMD than those with normal BMD (48.2% vs 38.8% and 12.1% vs 9.1%). In the univariate analysis, old age, male sex, smoking, metabolic components, fatty liver, and osteoporosis were significantly associated with the risk of adenoma and high-risk adenoma. In the multivariate analysis, osteoporosis was independently associated with risk of colorectal adenoma (odds ratio [OR], 1.65; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11 to 2.46; p=0.014) and high-risk adenoma (OR, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.14 to 3.29; p=0.014). Conclusions: Osteoporosis is an independent risk factor of colorectal adenoma and high-risk adenoma.
A Classification of User Experience in Similar Domains Using Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA)

Objective: The aim of this study is to utilize aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) technique to classify user experience (UX) from rich data source domains and apply the classification to analyze data in similar target domains. Background: Products that have reached the maturity stage in the product life cycle have a huge number of reviews available online. Researchers use this abundant resource to gain insights into users’ needs through opinion mining. However, for products that are still at the early stage, such opinion mining strategies may be ineffective. Method: This study conducted ABSA technique in order to analyze the UX of product domains that are less frequently reviewed. In addition, due to the lack of labels in the data, researchers’ subjectivity in analyzing the text can be a huge limitation for the analysis. Therefore, this study utilized cross-domain transfer learning to overcome this limitation. Results: As a result of this study, the appearance frequency by aspect for review sentences containing the extracted product specific elements was identified. In addition, the ratio of positive/negative classes predicted by the model was confirmed for each element. Conclusion: This study proposed a novel UX analysis technique in order to more effectively analyze UX in domains with fewer data. Application: ABSA technique in this study would be applicable to identify customers’ needs for products that lack reviews in various fields.

We designed a new product planning for business to customer market, by use of a business case. We considered a company, HESED, as a pilot company for our research. As a B2Bbased manufacturer of custom-made lighting fixtures for interior use, HESED Lighting has yet to enter the growing B2C lighting market. Being an expert in B2B market but still a novice in B2C market, HESED Lighting was able to obtain various information and knowledge on B2C market as well as some development ideas for new product, namely ‘message lighting’. The company used ideas from the big data analysis for new product planning and development, and was able to take a successful step into the B2C market.

Purpose: To compare medical costs of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) for the treatment of rectal tumors. Methods: The records of 80 patients who underwent ESD and 32 who underwent TEM for the treatment of rectal tumors were collected. Factors compared in the two groups included patient age, sex and clinical characteristics, as well as hospital stay, procedure time, instrument use, medications, postoperative complications, and imaging and laboratory findings. Costs were analyzed based on medical insurance fees, as set publicly by the Ministry of Health & Welfare, Korea. Medical costs were also divided into patient copayments and National Health Insurance (NHI) Corporation charges. Results: Patient characteristics, including age, sex, and comorbidities, were similar in the two groups, as were procedure time, histologic diagnosis, tumor size and distance from the anal verge, hospital stay, and complication rates. Median total hospital costs were significantly lower in the ESD than in the TEM group (1,214 United State dollars [USD] vs. 1,686 USD, P < 0.001). The costs for consumables, drugs and laboratory as well as operation fee were also significantly lower in the ESD than in the TEM group. However, patient copayments in the ESD group were significantly higher than in the TEM group (928 USD vs. 496 USD, P < 0.001), because ESD procedure for rectal tumors is not yet covered by the Korean NHI. Conclusion: Overall direct medical costs were significantly lower for ESD than for TEM in the treatment of rectal tumors.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Renal fibrosis is the final common pathway of various renal injuries and it leads to chronic kidney disease. Recent studies reported that FOXD1-lineage pericyte plays a critical role in tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TIF). However the regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Autophagy is a cellular process of degradation of damaged cytoplasmic components that regulates cell death and proliferation. To investigate the role of autophagy in FOXD1-lineage pericytes on renal TIF, we generated the FOXD1-lineage stromal cell-specific Atg7 deletion (<I>Atg7</I> <SUP>△FOXD1</SUP>) mice. FOXD1-lineage stromal cell-specific Atg7 deletion enhanced renal TIF through Smad-dependent transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling after unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). FOXD1-lineage stromal cell-specific Atg7 deletion increased the accumulation of interstitial myofibroblasts and enhanced the differentiation of pericytes into myofibroblasts after UUO. Peritubular capillary rarefaction was accelerated in <I>Atg7</I> <SUP>△FOXD1</SUP> mice after UUO. <I>Atg7</I> <SUP>△FOXD1</SUP> mice increased the accumulation of SQSTM1/p62-positive aggregates in the obstructed kidney and resulted in increased expression of NLRP3 inflammasome, interleukin (IL) 1-β and caspase-1 signaling pathway, which enhanced apoptosis of interstitial cells after UUO. In summary, our data showed that autophagy in FOXD1-lineage stromal cells plays a protective role in renal TIF through regulating the Smad4 dependent TGF-β an NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathway.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Autophagy is induced in platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β positive cells after UUO. </LI> <LI> FOXD1-specific Atg7 deletion enhances renal fibrosis through Smad dependent TGF-β signaling. </LI> <LI> FOXD1-specific Atg7 deletion enhances differentiation of pericytes into myofibroblasts. </LI> <LI> FOXD1-specific Atg7 deletion activated NLRP3 inflammasome pathway and induced apoptosis. </LI> <LI> Autophagy in FOXD1-lineage cells regulates renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis and apoptosis. </LI> </UL> </P>
A colorimetric hydrogel biosensor for rapid detection of nitrite ions

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Nitrite ions are important markers of inflammation, food safety, and water quality; therefore, various methods are under development to detect nitrite ions. This paper describes a novel method for detecting nitrite ions using polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel superimposed glass fiber membrane strips. A colorimetric Griess assay was performed on the hydrogel modified with <I>N</I>-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine by dropping a solution of nitrite and sulfanilamide. This colorimetric hydrogel sensor exhibited a detection limit as low as 10 μM for nitrite ions and the working concentration of nitrite ions was between 10 μM and 5 mM. The colorimetric reaction was completed within a few seconds; the performance test results indicated that the sensor was specific to nitrite ions compared to other anions, and it was suitable to detect nitrite ions in clinical samples. In the future, this sensor platform can be used to detect nitrite ions in various complex solutions including biological and environmental samples.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A nitrite detecting sensor was developed by using hydrogel superimposed glass fiber membranes. </LI> <LI> A Griess reagent, <I>N</I>-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine was immobilized on the chemically modified PEG hydrogel. </LI> <LI> Nitrite ions were detected by colorimetric Griess assay on the hydrogel sensor. </LI> </UL> </P>
