<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present an LED-waveguide-based neural probe array with the highest total light power delivery from a single commercial LED. A separable configuration between the LED and the waveguide has been proposed and verified experimentally for a disposable probe tip. The system comprises of a disposable MEMS optrode array and a reusable unit. The optrode array consists of a 4 × 4 array of 6 mm-long optical fibers assembled with thermally reflowed square-shaped glass microlenses. The reusable unit includes a domed top LED and driving circuitry. Measured light delivery efficiency of the optrode array and the total power efficiency of the probe were −10.6 dB and −21.6 dB, respectively.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> An LED-waveguide-based neural probe array using single commercial μLED presented. </LI> <LI> System comprises of a disposable MEMS optrode array and a reusable unit with μLED and circuitry. </LI> <LI> A 4 × 4 array of 6 mm-long optical fibers are assembled with thermally reflowed square-shaped glass microlenses. </LI> <LI> Delivered optical power and light delivery efficiency analyzed. </LI> </UL> </P>
Low-Cost Drive Circuit for AC-Direct LED Lamps

<P>This paper proposes a drive circuit for ac-direct LED lamps. The proposed circuit consists only of a line filter, an LED bridge, a load inductor, a bidirectional switch, and a switch-control circuit. The switch connects the LED bridge to the power line directly. Each leg of the LED bridge consists of LEDs and a protection diode, all connected in series. The load inductor limits the bridge current. The switch operates at a zero current switching condition, so the circuit has high power efficiency. The circuit can operate at a free-volt input condition ( 85 <; V<SUB>in,rms</SUB> <; 265 V). For all input voltage conditions the circuit had PE > 89%, luminous efficiency ~90 lm/W, power factor >0.9, and 120-Hz flicker index ~0.3. The circuit satisfies the IEC 61000-3-2 Class C and the EN 55015 regulations. The proposed LED driver is well suited for use in household LED lamps.</P>
Perifollicular Fibrosis: Pathogenetic Role in Androgenetic Alopecia

<P>Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-mediated process, characterized by continuous miniaturization of androgen reactive hair follicles and accompanied by perifollicular fibrosis of follicular units in histological examination. Testosterone (T: 10<SUP>−9</SUP>—10<SUP>−7</SUP> <SMALL>M</SMALL>) treatment increased the expression of type I procollagen at mRNA and protein level. Pretreatment of finasteride (10<SUP>−8</SUP> <SMALL>M</SMALL>) inhibited the T-induced type I procollagen expression at mRNA (40.2%) and protein levels (24.9%). T treatment increased the expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) at protein levels by 81.9% in the human scalp dermal fibroblasts (DFs). Pretreatment of finasteride decreased the expression of TGF-β1 protein induced by an average of T (30.4%). The type I procollagen expression after pretreatment of neutralizing TGF-β1 antibody (10 μg/ml) was inhibited by an average of 54.3%. Our findings suggest that T-induced TGF-β1 and type I procollagen expression may contribute to the development of perifollicular fibrosis in the AGA, and the inhibitory effects on T-induced procollagen and TGF-β1 expression may explain another possible mechanism how finasteride works in AGA.</P>

<P>Effects of Mn addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and as-extruded Al0.15Si0.2Fe0.3Cu0.15ZnxMn alloys were investigated. After the as-cast billets were kept at 400 degrees C for 1 hr, hot extrusion was carried out with a reduction ratio of 38:1. Mn addition to Al0.15Si0.2Fe0.3Cu0.15Zn based alloys resulted in the formation of Al6(Fe, Mn) and Al15(Fe, Mn)(3)Si-2 intermetallic compounds and grain refinement. With increasing of addition of Mn, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength was increased and maximum value of yield strength and ultimate strength was 29 and 96 MPa at 2.1 Mn containing alloy, respectively. In the tensile properties at 420 degrees C, Mn containing intermetallic compounds plays an important role for the improvement of strength and elongation due to grain refinement and suppression of grain growth by the formation of thermally stable Mn containing intermetallic compounds.</P>

Atherosclerosis is characterized by a chronic inflammatory disease, and chemokines play an important role in both initiation and progression of atherosclerosis development. Leukotactin-1 (Lkn-1/CCL15), a new member of the human CC chemokine family, is a potent chemoattractant for leukocytes. Our previous study has demonstrated that Lkn-1/CCL15 plays a role in the initiation of atherosclerosis, however, little is currently known whether Lkn-1/CCL15 is associated with the progression of atherosclerosis. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in human coronary atherosclerotic lesions play a crucial role in the progression of atherosclerosis by altering the vulnerability of plaque rupture. In the present study, we examined whether Lkn-1/CCL15 modulates MMP-9 release, which is a prevalent form expressed by activated macrophages and foam cells. Human THP-1 monocytic cells and/or human peripheral blood monocytes (PBMC) were treated with phorbol myristate acetate to induce their differentiation into macrophages. Foam cells were prepared by the treatment of THP-1 macrophages with human oxidized LDL. The macrophages and foam cells were treated with Lkn-1/CCL15, and the levels of MMP-9 release were measured by Gelatin Zymography. Lkn-1/CCL15 significantly enhanced the levels of MMP-9 protein secretion from THP-1 monocytic cells-derived macrophages, human PBMC-derived macrophages, as well as macrophage-derived foam cell in a dose dependent manner. Our data suggest that the action of Lkn-1/CCL15 on macrophages and foam cells to release MMP-9 may contribute to plaque destabilization in the progression of atherosclerosis.
