Wear assessment of the WC/Co cemented carbidetricone drillbits in an open pit mine

In rock drilling, the most important characteristic to clarify is the wear of the drill bits. The reason that the rock drill bits fail with time is wear. In dry sliding contact adhesive wear deteriorates the materials in contact, quickly, and is the result of shear fracture in the momentary contact joins between the surfaces. This paper aims at presenting an overview of the assessment of WC/Co cemented carbide (CC) tricone bit in rotary drilling. To study wear of these bits, two approaches have been used in this research. Firstly, the new bits were weighted before they mounted on the drill rigs and also after completion their useful life to obtain bit weight loss percentage. The characteristics of the rock types drilled by using such this bit were measured, simultaneously. Alternatively, to measure contact wear, namely, matrix wear a micrometer has been used with a resolution of 0.02 mm at different direction on the tricone bits. Equivalent quartz content (EQC), net quartz content (QC), muscovite content (Mu), coarseness index (CI) of drill cuttings and compressive strength of rocks (UCS) were obtained along with thin sections to investigate mineralogical properties in detail. The correlation between effective parameters and bit wear were obtained as result of this study. It was observed that UCS shows no significant correlation with bit wear. By increasing CI and cutting size of rocks wear of bit increases.

We examined the protective effects of Pyropia yezoensis glycoprotein (PYGP) against ethanol-induced gastric damage. The experimental animals were divided into four groups. They were treated with distilled water (control), ethanol alone (EtOH), ethanol + PYGP 150 mg/kg BW (EtOH+150), or ethanol + PYGP 300 mg/kg BW (EtOH+300). The groups were treated for 4 weeks. We measured mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), the apoptotic signaling pathway, and PARP activity in gastric tissues obtained from the rats. Ethanol consumption increased apoptotic signal activity and ERK, JNK, and p38 phosphorylation. PYGP reduced the apoptotic signaling pathway activity and ERK, JNK, and p38 phosphorylation. Furthermore, PYGP regulated Bcl-2 family expression. In light of these findings, PYGP appears to prevent ethanol-induced gastric injury and oxidative stress.

Background: Health care services effort to provide alternative cardiac rehabilitation (CR) models to serve patients according to their preferences and needs. So, the present study aimed to assess and compare the effects of hospital-based and hybrid CR programs on chest pain intensity and discomfort in cardiac surgery patients. Methods: In this prospective study, 110 cardiac surgery patients were invited to the CR department of a hospital in the western part of Iran between March and July 2016. Patients were divided into two groups: hospital-based and hybrid CR. The hospital-based program included 26 sessions, and the hybrid program included 10 training sessions and exercise. The Brief Pain Inventory and Pain Discomfort Scale were used as research instrument, and data were analyzed using the paired t-test and ANCOVA. Results: The results indicated that both hospital-based and hybrid CR are effective in reducing the chest pain intensity and discomfort of cardiac surgery patients (P < 0.05). In addition, the comparison of scores before and after treatment using ANCOVA shows that no significant differences were observed between the two programs (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Traditional hospital-based CR delivery is still the first choice for treatment in developing countries. However, hybrid CR is as effective as a hospital-based program in reducing pain components and it includes only 38% of the total cost in comparison to hospital-based delivery. So, we recommend using hybrid CR according with the recommendations of American Heart Association about using CR for the management of angina symptoms. (Korean J Pain 2017; 30: 265-71)

Fossil fuel depletion, global warming, energy security, and climate change spur interest in commercialand environmentally friendly alternative fuels. Palladium-based catalytic membrane technologycurrently produces ultrapure hydrogen from fossil fuels. Palladium exhibits high permeability, selectivityfor hydrogen, and good surface properties. Properties of some palladium alloys enable the industrialproduction of hydrogen. Reaction rates and conversion depend on several parameters. This documentreviews kinetic expressions for the water–gas shift (WGS) reactions and WGS combined with Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (WGS–FTS) reactions at high and low temperatures along with the details of thecatalysts and operating conditions. The discussion includes mathematical reactor modeling.

A novel ferrite-53% austenite medium-Mn transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel with extraordinary combinationof 1420 MPa tensile strength and 27% elongation was produced by a simple designed thermomechanical treatment. Thedeformation and strain hardening behavior of this material were studied in detail using feld emission scanning electronmicroscopy and electron backscatter difraction examinations of diferent strained specimens. Exclusive strain hardeningbehavior observed in this new TRIP steel was found to be related to the severe grain refnement to less than 200 nm andaustenite grain disintegration within the frst 1% of applied strain. Moreover, it was shown that the deformation of highlyunstable retained austenite benefts the mechanical properties, since it could promote the severe grain refnement and subsequent uniform strain distribution within the microstructure of the TRIP steel. Finally, based on the strain hardening behavioranalysis a new and simple measurable criterion was introduced as a reliable replacement of traditional austenite stabilityparameter or the K value.

Reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by externally bonded reinforcement often fail by debonding. This paper presents an experimental and analytical study aimed at better understanding and modeling the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) debonding failures in strengthened RC beams under monotonic and cyclic loads. In order to investigate the flexural behavior and failure modes of FRP-strengthened beams under monotonic and cyclic loadings, an experimental program was carried out. An analytical study based on the energy balance of the system was also performed. It considers the dominant mechanisms of energy dissipation during debonding and predicts the failure load of the strengthened beams. Validation of the model was carried out using test data obtained from the own experimental investigation.

Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy in Non-cardia Gastric Cancer Patients - Does it Improve Survival?

Background: Survival rates after resection of advanced gastric cancer are extremely poor. An increasing number of patients with gastric carcinomas (GC) are therefore being treated with preoperative chemotherapy. We evaluated 36 month survival rate of GC patients that were treated by adding a neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy before gastrostomy.Materials and Methods: Patients with stage II or III gastric adenocarcinomas were enrolled. The patients divided into two groups: (A) Neoadjuvant group that received concurrent chemoradiation before surgery (4500cGy of radiation at 180cGy per day plus chemotherapy with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil, in the first and the end four days of radiotherapy). Resection was attempted 5 to 6 weeks after end of chemoradiotherapy. (B) Adjuvant group that received concurrent chemo-radiation after surgical resection. Results: Two (16.7%) patients out of 12 patients treated with neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy and 5 (38.5%) out of 13 in the surgery group survived after 36 months. These rates were not significantly different with per protocol and intention-to-treat analysis. The median survival time of patients in group A and B were 13.4 and 21.6 months, respectively, again not significantly different. Survival was significantly greater in patients with well differentiated adenocarcinoma in group B than in group A (p<0.004). Conclusions: According to this study we suggest surgery then chemoradiotherapy for patients with well differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma rather than other approaches. Additional studies with greater sample size and accurate matching relying on cancer molecular behavior are recommended.
