Effect of sodium salts on the cycling performance of tin anode in sodium ion batteries

<P>To determine the effect of electrolyte salts on the cycling properties of tin anodes in sodium ion batteries, sodium/tin cells were prepared using eight electrolytes containing NaCF3SO3, NaBF4, NaClO4, and NaPF6 in ethylene carbonate-dimethyl carbonate (EC-DMC) and EC-DMC/fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) solvents. The first charge capacity and cycling properties strongly depended on the electrolyte salts. Additionally, an appropriately chosen electrolyte salt in combination with the FEC additive improved the cycling properties of the tin electrode. The tin electrode in the presence of the FEC-containing NaPF6-based electrolyte exhibited the best cycling properties. The first charge capacity and charge capacity after the 45th cycle were 220 and 189 mAh g(-1) (electrode), respectively at a current density of 84.7 mA g(-1) (electrode). The rate performance is also studied using the optimized electrolyte which reveals the ability of the electrode to perform in high current application. At a high current density of 4235 mA g(-1) (electrode), the capacity delivered is 24 mAh g(-1) (electrode). At a current rate of 1694 mA g(-1) (electrode), at the end of 1400th cycle, capacity is about 45 mAh g(-1) (electrode). The results of the study clearly indicate that the electrolyte salts critically affect the electrochemical performance of the tin anode in sodium ion batteries.</P>

<P>Relationship between the electrospun fiber diameters of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers with process parameters are complex and nonlinear. We used artificial neural networks technique to estimate the electrospun PMMA nanofiber diameter as a function of polymer concentration, nozzle-collector distance, temperature, flow rate, and voltage. The average errors of the predicted fiber diameters for training and testing data were found to be 1.26% and 5.74%, respectively. Process window for optimum nanofiber diameter was generated. The proposed index of relative importance, evaluated in this study, will be a useful guide to quantitatively and qualitatively identify and define the importance of different electrospinning parameters on the fiber diameter. Prostate cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men, primarily because of treatment resistance, recurrence, and metastasis. In the present study, we investigated the role of paracrine interleukin-8 (IL-8) in the antagonistic expression of IL-8 and androgen receptor (AR), and the contribution of IL-8 to prostate cancer aggressiveness. In hormone-responsive LNCaP cells that do not express IL-8, recombinant IL-8 treatment significantly increased expressions of IL-8, CXC chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2/9, Snail, and vimentin. IL-8 treatment significantly decreased AR and E-cadherin expression. IL-8-induced gene expression changes were suppressed by navarixin, a CXCR1/2 inhibitor, and gallein, a Gβγ inhibitor. In PC-3 androgen-refractory prostate cancer cells, IL-8 knockdown reduced expressions of CXCR2, MMP-2/9, Snail, and vimentin, and increased AR and E-cadherin expressions at the mRNA and protein levels. Co-culture with MEG-01 human megakaryocytic cells secreting high levels of IL-8 induced gene expression changes in both LNCaP and PC-3 cells, similar to those induced by IL-8 treatment. The altered gene expressions were accompanied by significant activation of transcription factor Snail in LNCaP and PC-3 cells. Treatment with the CXCR blocker navarixin inhibited the invasion of PC-3 cells but not LNCaP cells. However, invasion induced by MEG-01 was inhibited by navarixin in both LNCaP and PC-3 cells. The collective findings demonstrate that IL-8 enhances CXCR2 expression, which antagonistically regulates AR expression. More importantly, through changes in IL-8/CXCR2-regulated gene expression, IL-8 induces antiandrogen therapy resistance and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in prostate cancer.
Structural, Mechanical and Magnetic Properties of Fe – 40-at.% Al Powders during Mechanical Alloying

Nanocrystalline Fe – 40at.% Al alloy powders were prepared by using a mechanical alloying (MA)process with a planetary high-energy ball mill. The structural and the morphological propertiesof the powders were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), respectively. A disordered Fe(Al) solid solution with bcc crystal structure wasformed after 10 h of MA. Longer MA durations introduced ordering in the alloyed powders. Thefinal crystallite size was found to be as small as 5 nm whereas the internal strain was found toreach a final value of 2.1%. Also, the lattice parameter quickly increased to a maximum value of0.2926 nm at 30 h of MA, and then decreased to a value of 0.2873 at 80 h of MA. SEM resultsshowed variations in the shapes and the sizes of the particles in the powders at different stages. Furthermore, the microhardness values were found to increase gradually with increasing MA timedue to work hardening, grain refinement and solid-solution formation. Magnetic properties such asthe saturation magnetization (Ms) and the coercive field (Hc) were calculated from the hysteresisloops, and the results are presented as functions of the MA time.
A self-healing Sn anode with an ultra-long cycle life for sodium-ion batteries

<P>For a next-generation sodium battery to replace lithium ion batteries, it is essential to develop an anode with a long cycle life and high rate. Sn is considered to be an ideal candidate for the anode of sodium ion batteries. Here, we report a Sn anode that exhibits ultra-long-term cycle stability with a high capacity of 554 mA h g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 10C-rate for 5000 cycles. The optimized cell configuration consists of 1,2-dimethoxyethane as the electrolyte, a double separator including a nanoporous membrane, and a Sn anode with MWCNT as a conductive additive. Its capacity retention reaches up to 99.8% and its coulombic efficiency is near 100% for 5000 cycles. Surprisingly, we have discovered that the Sn powder exhibits a self-healing phenomenon during cycling. Sn is initially pulverized into a nanometer-sized powder, and then forms a three-dimensional porous coral-like structure in which ligament-shaped micrometer-sized Sn particles are connected with a low coordination number by room temperature sintering. The coral-like structure is mechanically stable towards volume change and electrically connected. The self-healing structure and mechanism provide a direction for the design of other electrodes with alloying mechanisms.</P>
MoS2 FULLERENE-LIKE NANOPARTICLES AND NANOTUBES USING GAS-PHASE REACTION WITH MoCl5

Inorganic fullerene-like (IF) nanoparticles of MoS2 were synthesized using gas-phase reaction starting from MoCl5 and H2S. The IF-MoS2 nanoparticles are spherical and in some cases faceted with diameters in general ranging between 20 and 80 nm. The IF-MoS2 nanoparticles have large hollow cores, filled in some cases with amorphous material. Various parameters have been investigated to understand the growth and formation of the IF-MoS2 nanoparticles. The parameters that have been studied include flow rates of the various carrier gases, temperature at which the reaction was carried out, time of the reaction and heating of the precursor material. The best set of conditions wherein maximum yields of the IF-MoS2 nanoparticles are obtained have been identified. Additionally, annealing the as-obtained samples or heating them in a mixture of H2 along with H2S improves the crystallinity and reduces the amorphous material filling in the core. Apart from the fullerene-like nanoparticles under certain experimental conditions nanotubes of MoS2 have also been obtained nonetheless in small yields.

Background: Mandibular fractures are common in camels, leading to considerable economic losses. This study explored methods of improving mandibular fractures repair, adjuvant with interdental wire, or bone plate fixation. Autologous bone marrow (BM) injection enhances osteogenesis and rapid healing. Objectives: To investigate the effect of autologous BM aspirate as an adjuvant treatment for repairing mandibular fractures in camels with interdental wire, or bone plate fixation. Methods: Thirty dromedary camels aged 5–8 years and of both sexes were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups: group 1 (n = 10) treated with stainless steel wire fixation and BM injection at the fracture line, group 2 (n = 10) treated with plate fixation and BM injection at the fracture line, group 3 (n = 5) treated with stainless steel bone wire fixation and placebo saline injection at the fracture line, and group 4 (n = 5) treated with plate fixation and placebo injection at the fracture line. The mandibular fractures were followed weekly for 12 weeks postoperatively to assess improvement and healing based on clinical evaluation, radiographic union scale, and bone turnover markers (i.e., bone alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, pyridinoline, and deoxypyridinoline). Results: Compared to other groups, elevated bone turnover markers in group 1 were demonstrated (p < 0.05) on the seventh postoperative day. Likewise, compared to other groups, both clinical findings and radiographic union scale significantly improved (p < 0.05) in group 1 on the 56th postoperative day. Conclusions: BM aspirate has a promising beneficial osteogenic effect on mandibular fracture repair in camels, most notably when combined with interdental wire fixation.
Incidentally Detected Cardiac Cyst Hydatid after Blunt Thoracic Trauma

Cardiac involvement in hydatid disease is more seldom than the involvement of the liver and the lungs. Cardiac cyst hydatid disease is diagnosed incidentally or by means of symptoms such as dyspnea and angina pectoris. Here, we present the case of a 45-year-old male patient who underwent open heart surgery for a randomly detected cardiac cyst hydatid during investigations carried out in a healthcare institution after accidentally falling from height. On the other hand, this patient did not have any complaints associated with hydatid disease before this event.
