Formation of large SiC nanocrystals on Si(1 0 0) by 12C implantation and electron beam annealing

Scanning electron microscopy and nuclear reaction analysis have been used to study annealing eects of 10 keV12C implanted andelectron beam annealed silicon (10) substrates that cause the formation of large SiC nanocrystals named nanoboulderson silicon.Wafer silicon was implanted with varying uences from 0.38 to 1.14· 1017 atoms cm. 2 and subsequently annealed at 1000.C for15 s. The deuterium induced12C(d,p)13C reaction was used to measure the12C dose quantitatively. It was found that the implanted car-bon remained in the specimen after annealing. This result, coupled with geometrical analyses of the resulting nanostructures suggest thatfollowing nucleation, the SiC nanocrystals grow as a result of C and Si diusion across the substrate surface, that became oxide freeduring annealing under vacuum conditions.
Surveying the Impact of Work Hours and Schedules on Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Sleep

Background: Given the long hours on the road involving multiple and interacting work stressors (i.e., delivery pressures, irregular shifts, ergonomic hazards), commercial drivers face a plethora of health and safety risks. Researchers goal was to determine whether and to what extent long-haul trucker work schedules influence sleep duration and quality. Methods: Survey and biometric data collected from male long-haul truck drivers at a major truckstop in central North Carolina over a six month period. Results: Daily hours worked (mean ¼ 11 hours, 55 minutes) and frequency of working over governmentmandated daily HOS regulations (23.8% “frequently or always”) were statistically significant predictors of sleep duration. Miles driven per week (mean ¼ 2,812.61), irregular daily hours worked (63.8%), and frequency of working over the daily hour limit (23.8% “frequently or always”) were statistically significant predictors of sleep quality. Conclusion: Implications of findings suggest a comprehensive review of the regulations and operational conditions for commercial motor vehicle drivers be undertaken.

<P><B>Significance</B></P><P>In many plants, seasonal flowering is a crucial aspect of maximizing reproductive fitness. Changes in day length (or photoperiod) provide the most reliable cue that enables plants to anticipate approaching seasonal variation in the surrounding environment. The induction of the <I>FLOWERING LOCUS T</I> (<I>FT</I>) gene controlled by the light-stabilized CONSTANS (CO) protein is the key mechanism for photoperiodic flowering in <I>Arabidopsis thaliana</I>. The CO/FT module is highly conserved in many plant species, including major crops. In <I>Arabidopsis</I>, blue-light–signaling pathways are essential for the stabilization of CO protein. Here we show a unique role of GIGANTEA in photoperiodic flowering through the interactions with two homologous proteins, FLAVIN-BINDING, KELCH REPEAT, F-BOX1 and ZEITLUPE, which antagonistically control CO stability.</P><P>Many plants measure changes in day length to synchronize their flowering time with appropriate seasons for maximum reproductive success. In <I>Arabidopsis</I>, the day-length–dependent regulation of CONSTANS (CO) protein stability is crucial to induce <I>FLOWERING LOCUS T</I> (<I>FT</I>) expression for flowering in long days. The FLAVIN-BINDING, KELCH REPEAT, F-BOX1 (FKF1) protein binds to CO protein specifically in the long-day afternoon and stabilizes it, although the mechanism remains unknown. Here we demonstrated that the FKF1-interacting proteins GIGANTEA (GI) and ZEITLUPE (ZTL) are involved in CO stability regulation. First, our immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry analysis of FKF1 revealed that FKF1 forms an S-phase kinase-associated protein 1 (Skp1)/Cullin(CUL)/F-box complex through interactions with <I>Arabidopsis</I> Skp1-like 1 (ASK1), ASK2, and CUL1 proteins and mainly interacts with GI protein in vivo. GI interacts with CO directly and indirectly through FKF1. Unexpectedly, the <I>gi</I> mutation increases the CO protein levels in the morning in long days. This <I>gi</I>-dependent destabilization of CO protein was cancelled by the <I>fkf1</I> mutation. These results suggest that there are other factors likely influenced by both <I>gi</I> and <I>fkf1</I> mutations that also control CO stability. We found that ZTL, which interacts with GI and FKF1, may be one such factor. ZTL also interacts with CO in vivo. The CO protein profile in the <I>ztl</I> mutant resembles that in the <I>gi</I> mutant, indicating that ZTL activity also may be changed in the <I>gi</I> mutant. Our findings suggest the presence of balanced regulation among FKF1, GI, and ZTL on CO stability regulation for the precise control of flowering time.</P>
Early American Perceptions of Korea and Washington’s Korea Policy, 1882-1905

This study explores the cultural and ideological factors that conditioned U.S. policy in Korea during the early period of U.S.-Korean relations (1882-1905) and Washington’s de facto pro-Japan policy. Key officials in Washington possessed negative perceptions of Korea that influenced their policymaking on an ideological level. These men perceived Korea to be a backward country averse to progress and generally believed that Japan should guide Korea to civilization. This article suggests that Washington’s perceptions of Korea were firmly rooted in a cultural discourse on Korea, which was shaped largely by dominant representations of Korea in popular texts of the period. Representations of Korea in newspaper articles and commercial texts were influenced by Americans’ early hostile encounters with the “hermit nation,” colored by ethnographic descriptions of Korea’s “backwardness,” and informed by racial stereotypes and the ideologies of imperialism prevalent in the West. It was also mediated by Japanese information channels. These texts generated a popular discourse on Korea that likely impacted Washington’s perceptions of Korea and conditioned its pro-Japan policy. They help to explain the perceptual rift that developed between policymakers in Washington and the American diplomatic community in Korea. In focusing on the nature and origins of the early American discourse on Korea, the purpose of this article is to contribute to scholarship on early U.S.-Korean relations by exploring how cultural facts may have conditioned U.S. foreign policy in Korea. It also aims to start a conversation about public awareness of Korea during the period and the importance of public opinion as a political force in the United States.
Magnetoresistance (MR) of twisted bilayer graphene on electron transparent substrate

We studied the magnetoresistance (MR) of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) on electron transparent substrate. Samples of tBLG were assembled on free-standing silicon nitride (SiN<SUB>x</SUB>) membranes (<100nm thick) by transferring chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown single layer graphene (SLG) twice; this allowed the measurement of the angle of rotation between the two layers, the twist angle, by electron diffraction using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). To compare with the previous reports on tBLG, we performed Raman spectroscopy on our samples. We measured the MR of tBLG for two different twist angles: 2<SUP>o</SUP> (small) and 18<SUP>o</SUP> (large). The MR showed superposition of two Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations for both angles. An analysis of the oscillation peaks by Landau fan diagrams showed difference as twist angle. While the large twist angle (18<SUP>o</SUP>) sample had two anomalous π Berry's phases, the small twist angle (2<SUP>o</SUP>) sample had conventional 2π and anomalous π Berry's phase depending on carrier density.

RNA polymerase III (Pol III) transcribes medium-sized non-coding RNAs (collectively termed Pol III genes). Emerging diverse roles of Pol III genes suggest that individual Pol III genes are exquisitely regulated by transcription and epigenetic factors. Here we report global Pol III expression/methylation profiles and molecular mechanisms of Pol III regulation that have not been as extensively studied, using nc886 as a representative Pol III gene. In a human mammary epithelial cell system that recapitulates early breast tumorigenesis, the fraction of actively transcribed Pol III genes increases reaching a plateau during immortalization. Hyper-methylation of Pol III genes inhibits Pol III binding to DNA via inducing repressed chromatin and is a determinant for the Pol III repertoire. When Pol III genes are hypo-methylated, MYC amplifies their transcription, regardless of its recognition DNA motif. Thus, Pol III expression during tumorigenesis is delineated by methylation and magnified by MYC.
