Biomarkers indicate mixture toxicities of fluorene and phenanthrene with endosulfan toward earthworm (Eisenia fetida)

        Nam, T. H.,Kim, L.,Jeon, H. J.,Kim, K.,Ok, Y. S.,Choi, S. D.,Lee, S. E. Springer Science + Business Media 2017 Environmental geochemistry and health Vol.39 No.2

<P>alpha-Endosulfan and some polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs) are persistent in the environment and can reach crop products via contaminated agricultural soils. They may even be present as mixtures in the soil and induce mixture toxicity in soil organisms such as earthworms. In this study, the combined toxicities of PAHs with alpha-endosulfan were determined in Eisenia fetida adults using an artificial soil system. alpha-Endosulfan and five PAHs were tested for their acute toxicity toward E. fetida in artificial soils. Only alpha-endosulfan, fluorene, and phenanthrene showed acute toxicities, with LC50 values of 9.7, 133.2, and 86.2 mg kg(-1), respectively. A mixture toxicity assay was conducted using alpha-endosulfan at LC10 and fluorene or phenanthrene at LC50 in the artificial soils. Upon exposure to the mixture of fluorene and alpha-endosulfan, earthworms were killed in increasing numbers owing to their synergistic effects, while no other mixture showed any additional toxicity toward the earthworms. Along with the acute toxicity results, the biochemical and molecular changes in the fluorene- and phenanthrene-treated earthworms with or without alpha-endosulfan treatment demonstrated that enhancement of glutathione S-transferase activity was dependent on the addition of PAH chemicals, and the HSP70 gene expression increased with the addition of alpha-endosulfan. Taken together, these findings contribute toward understanding the adverse effects of pollutants when present separately or in combination with other types of chemicals.</P>

Conventional and inverse magnetocaloric effects, and critical behaviors in Ni43Mn46Sn8In3 alloy

        Thanh, T.D.,Nan, W.Z.,Nam, G.,Van, H.T.,You, T.S.,Phan, T.L.,Yu, S.C. Elsevier 2015 Current Applied Physics Vol.15 No.10

A systematic study of the conventional and inverse magnetocaloric effects, and critical behaviors in an alloy ingot of Ni43Mn46Sn8In3 has been performed. Our results reveal the sample exhibiting structural and magnetic phase transitions at temperatures TCM = 166 K (TC of the martensitic phase), TM-A = 260 K (the martensitic-to-austenitic phase transformation) and TCA = 296 K (TC of the austenitic phase). The large values of refrigerant capacity (RC) around TM-A and TCA are found to be RCM-A = 172.6 and RCA = 155.9 J kg-1, respectively, under an applied field change of 30 kOe. Our critical analyses near the TCM and TCA reveal that a coexistence of the long- and short-range ferromagnetic order in the martensitic phase, while the long-range ferromagnetic order exists in the austenitic phase. Interestingly, at around TCA, the maximum magnetic entropy change (|ΔSmax|) versus magnetic field H obeys a power law, |ΔSmax| = a.Hn, where the exponent n is found to be about 0.66.

Vol.4 No.-

A relationship between the amount of dietary fat, the concentration of serum lipids and the development of coronary heart disease has been one of the most important medical problems in the recent years. Accumulated data indicate that striking differences exist among different populations in the incidence and severity of coronary heart disease and these differences tend to correlate with dietary factors rather than with racial or other factors. Extensive studies on healthy peoples in various parts of the world lead to the conclusion that the incidence of coronary heart disease is directly to related the average level of serum cholesterol and this cholesterol level is directly related to the percentage of calories provided by fats in the diet, particularly common saturated fats of meats and dairy products. Such a study has never been carried out in Korea and studies in other countries of the Far· East have indicated that their diets are extremely low in the fat content and their serum cholesterol and frequency of the coronary heart disease are also remarkably low. In an attempt to correlate the dietary fat intake, blood lipid level and the Incidence of coronary heart disease in Korean people, the following population groups are selected. 319 farmers, 100 Taegu City people, 50 upper class people, 129 Buddhist Monks, and 90 Korean soldiers attached to the United States Army who have been fed American diet for from 1 to 18 months and 60 American soldiers and officers. On all of those people an analysis of dietary constituents, complete blood lipid analysis including total and free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, total esterified fatty acid . lipid phosphorus, neutral fat. C/P ratio and cholesterol ester/total cholesterol ratio and 12 leads electrocardiogram for evidences of the coronary heart disease were performed and the data thus obtained were analyzed and correlated. The most striking difference in diets of various groups is the fat content. The fat intake of Buddhist Monks and farmers is significantly lower than any other groups and their serum lipid level and the incidence of abnormal electrocardiogram are also lowest in the whole groups. Among Koreans upper class people of Taegu city have the highest fat intake and also the highest serum lipid level and the incidence of abnormal electrocardiogram. The dietary fat intake of Korean is significantly lower than that of American and the serum lipid level and the incidence of coronary heart disease are also significantly lower than American. The results of current study indicate that there is direct correlation between the dietary fat intake, the serum lipid level and the incidence of coronary heart disease and it seems to be reasonable to conclude that among many factors which may affect the remarkably low incidence of the coronary heart disease in Koreans the low dietary fat intake is the most important factor.

Open Access : Development of pig welfare assessment protocol integrating animal-, environment-, and management-based measures

        ( Anriansyah Renggaman ),( Hong L Choi ),( Sartika Ia Sudiarto ),( Laura Alasaarela ),( Ok S Nam1 ) 한국동물자원과학회(구 한국축산학회) 2015 한국축산학회지 Vol.57 No.1

Background: Due to increased interest in animal welfare, there is now a need for a comprehensive assessment protocol to be used in intensive pig farming systems. There are two current welfare assessment protocols for pigs: Welfare Quality® Assessment Protocols (applicable in the Europe Union), that mostly focuses on animal-based measures, and the Swine Welfare Assurance Program (applicable in the United States), that mostly focuses on management- and environment-based measures. In certain cases, however, animal-based measures might not be adequate for properly assessing pig welfare status. Similarly, welfare assessment that relies only on environment- and management-based measures might not represent the actual welfare status of pigs. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to develop a new welfare protocol by integrating animal-, environment-, and management-based measures. The background for selection of certain welfare criteria and modification of the scoring systems from existing welfare assessment protocols are described. Methods: The developed pig welfare assessment protocol consists of 17 criteria that are related to four main principles of welfare (good feeding, good housing, good health, and appropriate behavior). Good feeding, good housing, and good health were assessed using a 3-point scale: 0 (good welfare), 1 (moderate welfare), and 2 (poor welfare). In certain cases, only a 2-point scale was used: 0 (certain condition is present) or 2 (certain condition is absent). Appropriate behavior was assessed by scan sampling of positive and negative social behaviors based on qualitative behavior assessment and human-animal relationship tests. Results: Modification of the body condition score into a 3-point scale revealed pigs with a moderate body condition (score 1). Moreover, additional criteria such as feed quality confirmed that farms had moderate (score 1) or poor feed quality (score 2), especially those farms located in a high relative humidity region. Conclusions: The developed protocol can be utilized to assess welfare status in an intensive pig farming system. Although further improvements are still needed, this study is a first step in developing a pig welfare assessment protocol that combines animal-, environment-, and management-based measures.

Operation of a RPC with Low Resistivity Bakelite for the Endcap Region of CMS in a High-Rate Environment

S.H.Ahn,E.J.Choi,홍병식,S.J.Hong,D.H.Kang,T.J.Kim,K.S.Lee,박성근,W.J.Park,M.S.Ryu,심현하,심광숙,S.W.Youn,김용주,Y.U.Kim,S.K.Nam,S.R.Jung,Y.L.Lee,J.T.Rhee,S.J.Lee,D.G.Koo,S.Y.Bahk 한국물리학회 2002 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.41 No.5

We present the beam-test results for a real-size prototype resistive plate chamber (RPC) for the endcap region of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The chamber built with relatively low resistivity bakelite was tested at the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) at CERN under a high photon-flux environment with an effective cluster rate up to about 1.2 kHz/cm2. The characteristics of the present chamber are compatible with the previous results for the muon detection effciency, time resolustion, mean travel time, and rate capability, which were obtained using a higher resistivity bakelite. The present beam-test results ensure that the RPC made of relatively low resistivity bakelite is also suitable for the CMS muon trigger detector. In addition, we study the position resolution of the endcap RPC of the CMS. By using the median position of the cluster strips, the position resolution can be reduced to only half of the strip width.

Performance of a Dual Layer Silicon Charge Detector During CREAM Balloon Flight

        Nam, S.,Ahn, H. S.,Allison, P.,Bagliesi, M. G.,Barbier, L.,Beatty, J. J.,Bigongiari, G.,Brandt, T. J.,Jeon, J. A.,Childers, J. T.,Conklin, N. B.,Coutu, S.,DuVernois, M. A.,Ganel, O.,Han, J. H.,Kim, K. IEEE 2007 IEEE transactions on nuclear science Vol.54 No.5

<P>The balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) has completed two flights in Antarctica, with a combined duration of 70 days. One of the detectors in the payload is the SCD (silicon charge detector) that measures the charge of high energy cosmic rays. The SCD was assembled with silicon sensors. A sensor is a 4 × 4 array of DC-coupled PIN diode pixels with the total active area of 21 × 16 mm2. The SCD used during the first flight (December 2004-January 2005) was a single layer device, then upgraded to a dual layer device for the second flight (December 2005-January 2006), covering the total sensitive area of 779 × 795 mm2. Flight data demonstrated that adding a second layer improved SCD performance, showing excellent particle charge resolution. With a total dissipation of 136 W for the dual layer system, special care was needed in designing thermal paths to keep the detector temperature within its operational range. As a consequence, flight temperatures of the SCD, even at diurnal maximum were kept below 38°C. The SCD mechanical structure was designed to minimize the possibility of damage to the sensors and electronics from the impacts of parachute deployment and landing. The detector was recovered successfully following the flight and is being refurbished for the next flight in 2007. Details of construction, operation, and performance are presented for the dual-layered SCD flown for the second CREAM flight.</P>
