2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) displays high toxicity in animals and has been implicated in human carcinogenesis. Although the mechanism of carcinogenesis by TCDD is unclear, it is considered to be a non-genotoxic compound and tumor promoter. In our experiment, we investigated the effects of TCDD on gene expression in mouse skin carcinogenesis. We used cDNA microarray to detect the differential gene expression in tumors induced in hairless mouse skin by MNNG plus TCDD protocol. We found that erb-2, c-ets2 and p27$^{kip1}$ were significantly up-regulated, but TNFR2, AKT-l, integrin $\beta$l, maspin, IGF-l, c-raf-l, Rb were significantly down-regulated, in tumor region, respectively. We also found that the expression of 53 genes involved in cen cycle, signal transduction, apoptosis, adhesion molecule, angiogenesis, and invasion, were changed two fold more, in tumor surrounding region. These data suggest that TCDD alters the expression of a large array of genes involved in apoptosis, cytokine production and angiogenesis in mouse skin carcinogenesis.
Pseudo 480-Hz Driving Method for Digital Mode Grayscale Displays

A pseudo 480-Hz drive method has been proposed to reduce the dynamic false contour noise that occurs on flat panel displays with displaying grayscale image in the digital mode, such as plasma display panels. The proposed method makes the image movements nearly continuous by rearranging the 8-bit image data displayed for 1 TV field into 8 subfields. The position of the image data rearranged in subfields has been optimized on the basis of the speed of the moving image by computer simulations for the dynamic false contour noise. It is verified that a significant reduction in the dynamic false contour noise is achieved with the proposed method as compared to the conventional noise reduction technologies. Moreover, to reduce the noise in digital mode displays, the proposed technology requires only 8 subfields. Therefore, there is no reduction in the brightness of the image.
Gray Scale Plasma Display Panel with a New High-Speed Drive

The objective of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of a newly proposed high-speed drive method for the gray scale display for high-resolution plasma display panels(PDP). In the experiment it was found that the characteristics of gray scale display are not closely affected by a priming period below 50[${\mu}s$], the width of the priming period, and that it can be driven stably from the brightest sub-field to the darkest sub-field even though a priming discharge is applied to the 1 TV-field only once. Moreover, from the experimental result, the gray scale pattern of 8-bit and 9 sub-fields was stably displayed in the experimental PDP with scan pulses having the pulse width of 0.7[${\mu}s$]. An address voltage margin of about 25[V] and a sustain voltage margin of about 10[V] was obtained.
Degradation of Phenanthrene by Sphingomonas sp. 1-21 Isolated from Oil Contaminated Soil

A phenanthrene-degrading bacterium, Strain 1-21, was isolated from oil-contaminated soil. This strain was a Gramnegative, aerobic, and rod-shaped bacterium, and exhibited a 99% sequence similarity of 16S rDNA to that of Sphingomonas subarctica. The major cellular fatty acid was a summed feature 7 (18:1 w7c, 18:1 w9t, 18:1 w12t), which is a characteristic of the Sphingomonas species. When 200 and 1,000ppm of phenanthrene was added as the sole carbon source, Strain 1-21 degraded 98% and 67% after 10 days of incubation, respectively. Futhermore, this strain was also able to utilize naphthalene and fluorene as sole carbon and energy sources.
