Abstract. In spite of the outstanding way in which democracy has been studied under an approach that focus its attention to the analysis about the steps that lead to power, it doesn’t care about solving the disputes of the ownership of power, but gives a different meaning to politics not just by the celebration of elections but also involves its understanding and study under qualitative parameters, which have motivated the study of the confirmation of democracy under a new academic agenda recently known as «quality of democracy», that in spite of its pertinence, requires a theoretical revision that allow us be aware of the implications, challenges and perspectives which face the construction of a democratic and valuable state. Resumen. A pesar de que se ha privilegiado el estudio de la democracia bajo un enfoque que centra su atención en el análisis sobre las pautas de acceso al poder, esta no se ocupa solo de dirimir las disputas de titularidad del poder, sino que connota un orden que refiere al hacer de la política más allá de la celebración de elecciones e involucra su entendimiento y estudio bajo parámetros cualitativos, que han motivado el estudio del afianzamiento de la democracia bajo una nueva agenda académica conocida actualmente como «calidad de la democracia», que no obstante su pertinencia, requiere de una revisión teórica que permita advertir las implicaciones, retos y perspectivas que enfrenta la construcción de un Estado democrático de calidad.
