Resistive heating feature of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)

This research was focused on heat generation characteristics of CFRPs and their possible use as a medium material for heat transfer in thermal cycles in buildings. Usually heat exchanger part of a thermal cycles are kept outside the building. On winter season or in frozen environment the heat exchangers covered with an ice layer which dramatically reduce the heat transfer rate and overall system efficiency. Therefore, using the carbon fiber instead of aluminum heatsinks could probable be a decent idea due to its acceptable thermal conductivity and more importantly, the resistive heating feature of it which can be used for defrosting process (remove the ice layer from fin surface). Accordingly, two PITCH and PAN based carbon fiber were used as a matrix and the epoxy resin in case of the filler to bind the fibers together. In-plain and through-plain thermal conductivity were measured for both composite types. Moreover, the resistive heating phenomena was verified under various direct electrical current and samples response, average temperature, and generated heat were calculated and compared in two cases. Finally, two heatsinks with equal geometry were manufactured and their performances under frozen environment were examined.

Polystyrene resin was functionalized by diethanolamine for the efficient removal of p-toluenesulfonicacid (p-TSA) from aqueous solution. Functionalized adsorbent (DEA-PS) was characterized by elementalanalysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, point of zero charge measurement and field-emissionscanning electron microscopy. According to the results, maximum removal of p-TSA was observed at thepH range of 2.5–5. The adsorption kinetics of p-TSA onto DEA-PS was represented by pseudo-first-ordermodel and the equilibrium data followed Langmuir model well. The adsorption process wasendothermic and spontaneous, along with the positive change of entropy. The regeneration of DEAPSwas also conducted by 1 M NaOH solution.
