Cancer Prevalence in Easter Island Population - 2006-2010

In Easter Island, population is composed by original habitants, the Rapa Nui culture and introduced people, mainly from continental Chile, who have a different ethnic origin. The aim of this research was to describe cancer frequency in resident population in Easter Island, and secondarily compare the findings with other islands of Polynesia and continental Chile. We reviewed the statistics of patients treated in Hanga Roa Hospital during the period 2006-2010, finding a total of 49 patients with cancer during the study. The most frequent cancers in Easter Island's people were breast cancer (8 cases), skin (8 cases), cervical (8 cases), lung (5 cases) and gastric (4 cases). According to gender, in females the most frequent cancer was breast, followed by skin and cervical, while in men, lung, prostate and hematopoietic cancers were the most frequent. Most cases of cervical cancer occurred in women of Rapa Nui ethnicity, while most skin cancers were found in non-Rapa Nui people. In case of the most common cancer in Easter Island, education (e.g. Papanicolaou and mammography screening) and prevention in the community (e.g. use sun block, avoid cigarettes) should be useful tools to reduce incidence.

<P>Tracking, in radar altimetry, is the positioning of the waveforms in the correlation window. This letter presents a tracking strategy in spaceborne altimetry using global navigation satellite system reflectometry. First, the tracking procedure is illustrated, and the tracking parameters are discussed one by one: the determination of the correlation window, the accuracy of specular delay guess, and the tracking-refresh period. Based on the results, the proposed European Space Agency Passive Reflectometry and Interferometry System In-Orbit Demonstrator tracking case study is examined.</P>

Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds and color most flowers, fruits and seeds. The regulation of flavonoid biosynthetic genes is directed by ternary complexes composed of MYB-bHLH-WD40 transcription factors. DNA-binding bHLH proteins are widely distributed in higher plants and comprise the second largest transcription factor family. The regulation of flavonoid synthesis by bHLH has been extensively studied in vascular plants, most functionally characterized in Arabidopsis. Sorghum is one of the most economically important crops worldwide. Despite 169 bHLH genes were identified in this cereal, few studies have reported their roles in seed coat pigmentation. Here we identified and characterized SbTT8, a sorghum bHLH-domain protein, through molecular modeling and complementation studies in Arabidopsis tt8 mutant. SbTT8 partially rescues the brown seed color and dormancy in Arabidopsis tt8 mutants. We show that SbTT8 is significantly larger than AtTT8 and holds a Lys467 residue where AtTT8 has an Ala367, within the DNA-recognition motif conserved throughout the bHLH family. This change likely affects how SbTT8 interacts with the target DNA, as compared with AtTT8. Our results shed light on the different phenotypes witnessed for A. thaliana transgenic lines expressing SbTT8 from sorghum, as well as the regulation of genes encoding enzymes for flavonoid biosynthesis.

<P>The focus of this paper lies on the possible experimental tests of leptogenesis scenarios. We consider both leptogenesis generated from oscillations, as well as leptogenesis from out-of-equilibrium decays. As the Akhmedov-Rubakov-Smirnov (ARS) mechanism allows for heavy neutrinos in the GeV range, this opens up a plethora of possible experimental tests, e.g. at neutrino oscillation experiments, neutrinoless double beta decay, and direct searches for neutral heavy leptons at future facilities. In contrast, testing leptogenesis from out-of-equilibrium decays is a quite difficult task. We comment on the necessary conditions for having successful leptogenesis at the TeV-scale. We further discuss possible realizations and their model specific testability in extended seesaw models, models with extended gauge sectors, and supersymmetric leptogenesis. Not being able to test high-scale leptogenesis directly, we present a way to falsify such scenarios by focusing on their washout processes. This is discussed specifically for the left-right symmetric model and the observation of a heavy <TEX>$ W_{R}$</TEX>, as well as model independently when measuring <TEX>$ \Updelta L = 2$</TEX> washout processes at the LHC or neutrinoless double beta decay.</P>
