<P>This report presents the results of APMP.QM-S4, a supplementary comparison. This comparison is designed to test the capabilities of the NMIs to measure and certify carbon dioxide at a nominal amount fraction of 2000 µmol/mol in nitrogen. The previous key comparisons regarding carbon dioxide, CCQM-K1.b and CCQM-K52, had been done at a lower range than that in this comparison. This comparison gives an opportunity to the NMIs to submit supporting evidence for CMC at a higher range.</P><P>Main text.To reach the main text of this paper, click on Final Report. Understanding the Brain-Heart Connection Through a Case of Angry Glioma Syndrome

We discuss a patient with a tumor on the anterior corpus callosum who underwent open biopsy eventually succumbing to cerebrogenic fatal arrhythmia following wounded glioma syndrome. A healthy 37-year-old female patient was admitted to our department due to a history of headache for 13 months. MRI revealed a suspicious glioma infiltrating the anterior corpus callosum. Neurologic examination only showed low cognitive assessment score (Montreal Cognitive Assessment score 20/30). ECG was normal sinus rhythm. Steroids and levetiracetam were administered prior to operation. Patient underwent right frontal craniotomy and biopsy of tumor with unremarkable events. During the first hospital day, patient had episodes of bradycardia followed by decrease in sensorium. Brain CT scan showed progression of edema without hemorrhage within the tumor bed. This was followed minutes later by two episodes of generalized tonic-clonic seizures and pulseless ventricular tachycardia. Cardiac resuscitation was done for 24 minutes but patient eventually expired. Location of the lesion and the epileptogenicity of the peritumoral cortex greatly contributed to the patient’s demise. Involvement of the frontomesial structures, particularly the insula and the cingulate cortex, and their connection to the central autonomic network, increased susceptibility to arrhythmias. Decreased seizure threshold worsened post-operative edema, further aggravating the dysregulation of the brain-heart-connection.

<P>This key comparison was performed to demonstrate the capability of NMIs to analyse the purity of methane for use as a source gas in the preparation of standard gas mixtures. This capability is an essential requirement for the preparation of accurate standards of natural gas and some other fuels.</P><P>Since it is difficult to carry out a comparison with individual samples of pure gas, the sample for this comparison was a synthetic mixture of high purity methane with selected added impurities of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and ethane. These mixtures were prepared by a gas company as a batch of 10 cylinders and their homogeneity and stability were evaluated by NMIJ.</P><P>The KCRVs for the four different analytes in this key comparison are based on a consensus of values reported by participants. The uncertainties in the degrees of equivalence were calculated by combining the reported uncertainties with the homogeneity of the samples and the uncertainty of the KCRV. The results submitted are generally consistent with the KCRV within the estimated uncertainties.</P><P>Finally, this comparison demonstrates that the analysis of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and ethane in methane at amount fractions of 1 µmol/mol to 5 µmol/mol is generally possible with an uncertainty of 5% to 10%.</P><P>Main text.To reach the main text of this paper, click on Final Report.
