Calcium and zinc binding protein, calprotectin is a multifunctional protein with broad spectrum antimicrobial and antitumoural activity. It was purified from human neutrophil, using a two-step ion exchange chromatography. Since surface hydrophobicity of calprotectin may be important in membrane anchoring, membrane penetration, subunits oligomerization and some biological roles of protein, in this study attempted to explore the effect of calcium in physiological range on the calprotectin lipophilicity. Incubation of human calprotectin ($50\;{\mu}g/ml$) with different calcium concentrations showed that 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulfonic acid (ANS) fluorescence intensity of the protein significantly elevates with calcium in a dose dependent manner, suggesting an increase in calprotectin surface hydrophobicity upon calcium binding. Our study also indicates that calcium at higher concentrations (6, 8 and 10 mM) induces aggregation of human calprotectin. Our finding demonstrates that the starting time and the rate constant of calprotectin aggregation depend on the calcium concentration.

In this study, the effects of various ratios of cow milk to soy milk (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100) and three types of commercial culture composition (ABY- 1, MY-720, and YO-Mix 210; all of them containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, and yogurt cultures) on the biochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics of a probiotic fermented composite drink during incubation and refrigerated storage were investigated. It was found that the shortest fermentation time, greatest mean pH drop rate, and mean acidity increase rate were related to the 50:50/ABY treatment. 25:75/ABY and 25:75/MY treatments exhibited the highest viability of B. bifidum and/or L. acidophilus at the end of 21 days of refrigerated storage. The influence of the type of starter culture composition on the sensory properties of the final products was not significant. Based on microbial and sensory evaluations, using the 50:50 ratio with each type of culture composition was considered as the most suitable treatment.
Numerical study of blowing and suction slot geometry optimization on NACA 0012 airfoil

The effects of jet width on blowing and suction flow control were evaluated for a NACA 0012 airfoil. RANS equations were employedin conjunction with a Menter’s shear stress turbulent model. Tangential and perpendicular blowing at the trailing edge and perpendicularsuction at the leading edge were applied on the airfoil upper surface. The jet widths were varied from 1.5% to 4% of the chordlength, and the jet velocity was 0.3 and 0.5 of the free-stream velocity. Results of this study demonstrated that when the blowing jet widthincreases, the lift-to-drag ratio rises continuously in tangential blowing and decreases quasi-linearly in perpendicular blowing. The jetwidths of 3.5% and 4% of the chord length are the most effective amounts for tangential blowing, and smaller jet widths are more effectivefor perpendicular blowing. The lift-to-drag ratio improves when the suction jet width increases and reaches its maximum value at2.5% of the chord length.

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiology has taken on new roles in the management of health care services. In this study, we developed a non-pharmacological self-management modular program group intervention and evaluated its efficacy as an adjunct therapy in patients suffering from early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Patients were randomized to either participate in a non-equivalent intervention group along with the standard of care or only receive standard-of-care treatment at a community rheumatology center. The outcomes measured were a pain visual analog scale (VAS), patient general health (GH) on a VAS, and the Short Form 36 Health Survey version 2 scale measuring quality of life. These parameters were evaluated in the first week to obtain baseline values, and at 20, 32, 48, and 60 weeks to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention group. RESULTS: The patients were randomized, with 100 patients in the intervention group and 106 in the control group. The intervention and control groups were similar with regard to the percentage of women (86% vs. 89.6%), tobacco usage (25% vs. 19.8%), mean age (42.6±13.2 years vs. 46.6±10.9 years), and disease duration (15.3±6.7 months vs. 14.5±6.6 months). The mean outcomes were significantly different between the two groups, and post-hoc pairwise analysis demonstrated significant deterioration in the control group in contrast to improvement in the intervention group at the second, third, fourth, and fifth evaluations. Improvements were often seen as early as the 12-week and 24-week follow-up visits. CONCLUSIONS: Epidemiology contributes to the evaluation of how well specific therapies or other health interventions prevent or control health problems. The modular program group intervention implemented in this study appears to be a suitable and feasible method to facilitate much more comprehensive management of early RA in socioeconomically challenged communities.

This report presents the case of a 5-year-old boy with a hard swelling on the right side of the mandible body. An important point of this case is that the primary imaging finding was fine spicules in the inferior border of the mandible on panoramic radiography without significant changes in bone density. Cone-beam computed tomography views revealed a lytic lesion on the lingual side of the right mandibular body with the destruction of the lingual cortex and periosteal reaction from the midline to the first molar area. Careful attention to this radiographic finding in the primary stage in the absence of other significant imaging findings, particularly in children, could result in the early diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma. Therefore, a better prognosis can be expected following early surgical treatment.

Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the formation and motion of single bubble inliquids using volume-of-fluid (VOF) method using the software platform of FLUENT 6.3. Transient conservation massand momentum equations with considering the effects of surface tension and gravitational force were solved by thepressure implicit splitting operator (PISO) algorithm to simulate the behavior of gas–liquid interface movements inthe VOF method. The simulation results of bubble formation and characteristics were in reasonable agreement withexperimental observations and available literature results. Effects of fluid physical properties, operation conditions suchas orifice diameter on bubble behavior, detachment time, bubble formation frequency and bubble diameter were numericallystudied. The simulations showed that bubble size and bubble detachment times are linear functions of surfacetension and decrease exponentially with the increase in liquid density. In contrast, only a small influence of the fluidviscosity on bubble size and detachment time was observed. Bubble collapse at a free surface simulation with VOFmethod was also investigated.

The aim of the present study was to survey the frequency of inducible and constitutive phenotypes and inducible cross-resistant genes by regulating the methylation of 23S rRNA (ermA, ermB, and ermC) and macrolide efflux-related msrA gene in Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis strains. A total of 172 bacterial isolates (identified based on standard tests), were examined in this study. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by the disk diffusion method, and all isolates were evaluated with respect to inducible and constitutive phenotypes. The presence of ermA, ermB, ermC, and msrA genes was investigated by a PCR assay. The constitutive resistance phenotypes showed a higher distribution among the isolates. R phenotype was detected more among S. epidermidis isolates (46.25%). ermB, ermC, and msrA genes were detected more in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE) isolates that had R and HD phenotypes (>77% strains). The ermA gene had the lowest frequency among MRSA, MRSE, MSSA, and MSSE strains (<14% isolates). Distribution of inducible resistance genes in MRSA and MRSE strains, and possibly other species, leads to increased constitutive resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin, and other similar antibiotics. Therefore, it can be challenging to treat infections caused by these resistant strains.
