Damaging winds, associated with a variety of weather phenomena, are frequently experienced in New Zealand. Observations and modelling of two recent extreme wind events; the Taranaki tornado outbreak of July 2007, and the Greymouth down-slope easterly wind storm of July 2008 are described in detail here. Post-event engineering damage surveys, rare for New Zealand, were done for these storms and the results are summarized here. Finally, the issue of sampling extreme wind events is raised and the need to include detailed numerical modelling analysis to understand wind gust climatologies at observing sites and extending these to wider regions is discussed.

This experiment examined the effect of dietary spray-dried bovine colostrum on intestinal histology and organ weights in early-weaned pigs. In a randomised complete block design, twelve 14-day-old weaner pigs were offered a diet containing either 5% spray-dried bovine colostrum or no colostrum (control). Diets were formulated to contain 14.8 MJ/kg DE, 1.26% available lysine and to meet or exceed requirements for other nutrients. Piglets were offered the diets for a period of 14 days. No effect of diet on growth rate or feed intake was observed (p>0.10). Small intestine weight was reduced by 12% in piglets consuming dietary bovine colostrum (p< 0.05). Villous height and crypt depth were increased and decreased, respectively, in the proximal jejunum, mid jejunum and distal ileum of pigs consuming dietary bovine colostrum (p<0.05). Mid-jejunal lamina propria $CD4^+$ and $CD8^+$ T lymphocyte density was increased by 28 and 37%, respectively, in piglets consuming dietary bovine colostrum (p<0.05). Diet did not affect thickness of tunica muscularis externa or tunica submucosa (p>0.10). Collectively, these results suggest a positive effect of dietary bovine colostrum on intestinal morphology and immune status in early-weaned pigs.
Security of Mobile Agent Platforms using RBAC based on Dynamic Role Assignment

Mobile agent technology is a new trend in the network computing. It succeeds to capture researchers' and industry's interests long time ago, due to its innovative capabilities and attractive applications. Mobile agents are self-contained data and software modules, able to autonomously move from one host to another across the network, in order to perform their tasks and eventually return to their initiators. Despite their several qualities that make them suitable for various disciplines, where autonomy, dynamism and flexibility are strongly recommended, mobile agents still suffer from some limitations mainly related to the security issues raised by mobility. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address the security problems evoked by platforms hosting mobile agents, particularly those caused by unauthorized access attacks. Our approach introduces a robust security policy for a Hospital, where a flexible role-based access control model (RBAC) is used and simulated as a set of cooperative agents. We implant a privilege management infrastructure (PMI) charged with issuing attribute certificates based on elliptic curve cryptography, in order to provide this model with a dynamic role assignment. Finally, practical experiments are conducted to evaluate our approach and prove its effectiveness, reliability and security.
High Precision Machining of a Displacement Sensor for Helicoidal Motions

This research study presents the design and the high precision manufacture procedure of a fiber-optic displacement sensor. It is composed of two fiber-optic probes associated with a structure of a cones’ grating. The sensor is characterized by its ability to measure the linear displacement for an axis performing a helicoidal motion. This motion has been demonstrated on a high precision lathe; where the spindle provided the rotational motion, associated to a translational motion on the linear stage. This allowed to obtain the two simultaneous motions. The displacement of the translational stage is measured by the sensor in real time. Firstly, a highly precise geometric model of the reflector part for the sensor was developed. This model provided a specific geometry for the cones-assembled grating, which has been precisely manufactured. The geometric parameters and the surface characteristics of each step in the fabricated grating were both identified in situ on the lathe. The agreement between simulation and experimental results is excellent. The performances of the fiber-optic displacement sensor were identified in-situ on the lathe. The analysis of the voltage output signals from the two fiber-optic probes is used to measure the grating displacement. The unbalanced rotation due to non-centered axes was also characterized. The sensor provided a micrometric resolution, on a measurement range of more than one centimeter.
Mobile Agent Security Using ID-Based Agreement Protocol and Binary Serialization

Recent days, the systems based on mobile agents have attracted the attention of many researchers in different areas, because of the autonomic and pro-active aspects of the agent, as well as its adaptive and dynamic behaviors in solving complex problems. However, the mobility of these entities needs to be secured against multiple vulnerabilities that present a real obstacle to its wide expansion. When the mobile agent is migrating from one node to another over the network, it is difficult to guarantee that it will be executed safely and correctly on the hosting platform, neither that it will not encounter in its way malicious entities that try to harm it. In this paper, we try to address these security issues by introducing an approach based on cryptographic mechanisms. This approach involves an Identity-Based Key Agreement Protocol to get a session key and ensure authentication, an Advanced Standard Encryption (AES) for the confidentiality of data exchanged, as well as a Binary Serialization to get an easy and persistent portability of the agent across the network.
