Effects of Phytase Supplementation on the Performance of Broiler Chickens Fed Maize and Wheat Based Diets with Different Levels of Non-phytate Phosphorus

        Singh, P.K.,Khatta, V.K.,Thakur, R.S.,Dey, S.,Sangwan, M.L. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2003 Animal Bioscience Vol.16 No.11

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of phytase supplementation on the growth performance, nutrients utilization and bone mineralization in broiler chickens. Day-old broiler chicks (n=480) were equally devided into eight treatment groups and fed maize or wheat based isocaloric, isonitrogenous and isocalcium diets having two non phytate phosphorus (NPP) concentrations (0.50% and 0.30%) and two phytase levels (0 and 500 phytase units/kg diet) in a 42 days growth trial. Maize based dietary treatments were MC (NPP 0.50%, MN (NPP 0.30%), MNP (MN+500 units of phytase) and MCP (MC+500 units of phytase), whereas wheat based experimental diets were WC (NPP 0.50%), WN (NPP 0.30%), WNP (WN+500 units of phytase) and WCP (WC+500 units of phytase). The NPP levels were maintained by dicalcium phosphate. Reduction in dietary NPP depressed live weight gain and feed intake and increased feed conversion ratio (FCR). Phytase supplementation to low NPP (0.30%) diets significantly (p<0.05) improved the growth performances of broilers. The supplementation to low NPP diets allowed complete, safe and economic replacement of dietary inorganic P (dicalcium phosphate) to reduce feed cost per kg live weight gain of broilers. Reduction in dietary NPP did not affect retention of nutrients except phosphorus (P) but had a significant (p<0.05) depression in tibia ash and minerals (Ca, P) concentration in serum and tibia ash. Phytase supplementation at low NPP level was effective (p<0.05) in improving the retention of dry matter, Ca and P and Ca and P concentration in serum and tibia ash. However, the supplementation was not effective at high level of NPP (0.50%). There were no significant (p>0.05) differences in carcass quality among dietary treatments. The response of phytase was greater in low NPP and maize based diets as compared with high NPP and wheat based diets, respectively. The results show that phytase supplementation to low NPP (0.30%) diets improved the growth performance, relative retention of nutrients (N, Ca and P) and minerals (Ca, P) status of blood and bone in broiler chickens, with a better efficacy in maize based diets.

        R. Govindarajan1,,N. Sreevidya1,,M. Vijayakumar1,,M. Thakur2,,V.K. Dixit2,,S. Mehrotra*1,,P. Pushpangadan1 한국생약학회 2005 Natural Product Sciences Vol.11 No.3

Chlorophytum borivilianum Baker (Antharicaceae) comonly referred as ‘Safed Musli’ has beenwidely used in the Indian traditional systems of medicine to treat various diseases like rheumatism apart fromaphordisiac properties. C. borivilianum was screened for the first time to determine its antioxidant activity, isolation of the sapogenins and standardization of the isolated sapogenin fraction using HPTLC. Potent antioxidantactivity of ethanolic extract was found by their ability to scavenge DPPH (84.51%), hydroxyl radical (48.95 %),feryl bi-pyridyl complex (84.53%) along with the inhibition of lipid peroxidation (67.17%) at 100g/mlconcentration. The ethanolic extract also exhibited significant inhibition of superoxide anion radical generated byplant in the traditional system especially its use as a Rasayana drug.

      • Orbital anisotropy in SnO2 thin films and its modification by swift heavy ion irradiation

        Thakur, H.,Kumar, R.,Thakur, P.,Brookes, N.B.,Sharma, K.K.,Singh, A.P.,Kumar, Y.,Gautam, S.,Chae, K.H. North Holland ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2011 Chemical physics letters Vol.511 No.4

We report on the observation of a strong orbital anisotropy in the orthorhombic phase of SnO2 thin films and its modification by swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiation. Structural investigations along with the Raman spectroscopy show a significant distortion of the SnO6 octahedra after SHI irradiation. The X-ray absorption and X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) experiments provide the direct evidences of change in orbital anisotropy/electronic structure due to orbital reconstruction in the SnO2 lattice after irradiation. The XLD measurements at the O K edge confirm the deterioration in the SnO6 octahedra due to controlled structural disorder induced by SHI irradiation.

X-ray Absorption Spectroscopic Studies of Pulsed-Laser-Deposited Thin Films of Fe3O4 on Si(111) Substrate

        P. Thakur,W. K. Choi,K. H. Chae,J.-Y. Kim,R. J. Choudhary,Shailja Tiwari,Ram Prakash,D. M. Phase,Ravi Kumar 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.53 No.6

We report on the growth and the characterization of magnetite thin films grown on Si(111) substrates by using pulsed laser deposition at different substrate temperatures (TS = 350, 450 and 550 ℃) by performing X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments. The O K− and Fe L3,2−edge XAS spectra reveal that the couplings of the O 2p with Fe 3d orbitals highly rely on the growth processes. The XMCD data of well-characterized thin films exhibit characteristic contributions from Fe3+ A ions in tetrahedral sites and Fe2+ B and Fe3+ B ions in octahedral sites and have spectral features similar to those of the Fe3O4 single crystal. The temperature dependence of the XMCD line shape features remain unchanged below and above the Verwey transition. These investigations demonstrate the experimental conditions for controlled growth of Fe3O4 thin films on Si(111) substrates and suggest that the Fe3O4/Si(111) might a promising spintronic materials for future technology.

      • Investigations on the structural, optical and electronic properties of Nd doped ZnO thin films

        Subramanian, M,Thakur, P,Gautam, S,Chae, K H,Tanemura, M,Hihara, T,Vijayalakshmi, S,Soga, T,Kim, S S,Asokan, K,Jayavel, R Institute of Physics [etc.] 2009 Journal of Physics. D, Applied Physics Vol.42 No.10

<P>We report the synthesis and characterization of Nd doped ZnO thin films grown on Si (1 0 0) substrates by the spray pyrolysis method. The surface morphology of these thin films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and shows the presence of randomly distributed structures of nanorods. Grazing angle x-ray diffraction studies confirm that the doped Nd ions occupied Zn sites and these samples exhibited a wurtzite hexagonal-like crystal structure similar to that of the parent compound, ZnO. The micro-photoluminescence measurement shows a decrease in the near band edge position with Nd doping in the ZnO matrix due to the impurity levels. The near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements at the O K edge clearly exhibit a pre-edge spectral feature which evolves with Nd doping, suggesting incorporation of more charge carriers in the ZnO system and the presence of strong hybridization between O 2p–Nd 5d orbitals. The Nd M5 edge NEXAFS spectra reveal that the Nd ions are in the trivalent state.</P>

      • VLS-like growth and characterizations of dense ZnO nanorods grown by e-beam process

        Agarwal, D C,Chauhan, R S,Avasthi, D K,Sulania, I,Kabiraj, D,Thakur, P,Chae, K H,Chawla, Amit,Chandra, R,Ogale, S B,Pellegrini, G,Mazzoldi, P Institute of Physics [etc.] 2009 Journal of Physics. D, Applied Physics Vol.42 No.3

<P>We present a new approach to produce ZnO nanorods in a reproducible manner at a temperature lower than other physical vapour deposition techniques, such as the vapour–liquid–solid mechanism. Arrays of well-aligned ZnO nanorods of uniform diameter have been synthesized on the Si substrate precoated with Au, using a simple electron beam evaporation method without the flow of any carrier gas. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy characterizations show that as-grown nanorods are well aligned and uniform in diameter. X-ray diffraction measurements and clear lattice fringes in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image show the growth of good quality polycrystalline hexagonal ZnO nanorods and a ⟨0 0 2⟩ growth direction. The polarization-dependent studies of near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) are performed to investigate the electronic structure of the zinc and oxygen ions. The analysis of NEXAFS spectra at different angles of incidence of photon flux indicates the formation of ZnO nanorods having anisotropic behaviour of O and Zn states. The photoluminescence spectrum exhibits strong ultraviolet emission at 385 nm and the UV–visible spectrum also shows a band-gap transition around 390 nm indicating the good quality of nanorods. The catalytic growth mechanism of the ZnO nanorods is discussed on the basis of experimental results in this work.</P>

Electronic Structure of Mn-Doped ZnO Studied by Using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

        P. Thakur,K. H. Chae,M. Subramanain,R. Jayavel,K. Asokan 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.53 No.5

Mn-doped ZnO thin films that showed ferromagnetism at room temperature were synthesized with nominal compositions Zn1-xMnxO (x = 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.10 and 0.15) by using a spray pyrolysis technique. High-resolution X-ray diffraction studies suggested that the doped Mn ions occupied Zn sites and that all the samples exhibited a wurtzite hexagonal-like crystal structure similar to that of the parent compound, ZnO. The near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements at the O K-edge clearly exhibited a pre-edge spectral feature, which evolved with Mn doping, similar to one observed in hole-doped cuprates and manganites. The Mn L3;2-edge NEXAFS spectra exhibited divalent Mn apart from mixed valent Mn3+ / Mn4+ states, which were well supported by Mn K-edge spectra.

        Structural, magnetic and electronic structure studies of NdFe1−<i>x</i>Ni<i>x</i>O3 (0 ≤ <i>x</i> ≤ 0.3)

        Bashir, Abida,Ikram, M,Kumar, Ravi,Thakur, P,Chae, K H,Choi, W K,Reddy, V R IOP Pub 2009 Journal of Physics, Condensed Matter Vol.21 No.32

<P>We present here the structural, electronic structure, magnetic and Mossbauer studies of NdFe1-xNixO3 (0 <= x <= 0.3) samples. All the samples exhibit a single-phase orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm. The near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) studies reveal that, with the Ni substitution at Fe sites, a new spectral feature about 1.5 eV lower than the pre-edge structure of NdFeO3 in the O K edge is observed due to the 3d contraction effect and is growing monotonically with the increase of Ni concentration. The Fe L-3,L-2, Ni L-3,L-2 and Nd M-5,M-4 edges confirm the trivalent state of Fe, Ni and Nd ions. The Mossbauer spectra fitted with two Zeeman sextets confirm the different surroundings of Ni around Fe ions. With the increase in Ni concentration, the sextets are broadened. The increase of quadrupole splitting and the decrease of the hyperfine field suggest the change in the ordered regime of the system. The magnetic behaviour at low temperatures is explained in the context of competition among moments of rare earth (Nd) and transition metal ions (Fe/Ni). The strong paramagnetic contribution of the Nd magnetic sublattice and spin flip phenomenon is observed from the temperature dependence of zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization where spin crossover is observed. The isothermal hysteresis loops show a decrease of magnetization and increase of coercivity with the increase in temperature and complements magnetization versus temperature. The results are explained on the basis of the spin reorientation phenomenon.</P>

X-ray Absorption and Emission Studies of Mn-doped ZnO Thin Films

        P. Thakur,S. Gautam,K. H. Chae,M. Subramanain,R. Jayavel,K. Asokan 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.1

The electronic structure of Mn-doped ZnO thin films, a dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) having possible room temperature (RT) ferromagnetism, synthesized with nominal compositions of Zn1−xMnxO (x = 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.10, and 0.15) by using the spray pyrolysis method are investigated using soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. The intensity of the pre-edge spectral feature at the O K-edge increases with Mn concentration, which clearly reveals that there is a strong hybridization of Mn ions with the ZnO matrix. The near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements at the Mn K- and L3,2-edges show a mixed valence nature for the Mn ions, with Mn2+ and Mn3+/Mn4+ states, and the Mn3+/Mn4+ states are observed to increase with the Mn-concentration. Mn L2,3 resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements show that the excess Mn interstitials appear in the sample and that direct exchange interactions with substitutional Mn atoms may explain the magnetic interaction in Mn-doped ZnO.
