Performance Analysis and System Design for Hierarchical Modulated BICM-ID

        Qiaoyu Li,Jun Zhang,Lin Bai,Jinho Choi IEEE 2014 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS Vol.13 No.6

<P>Hierarchical modulation (HM) enables unequal priority transmissions using a signal constellation of non-uniformly spaced constellation points, which is an important property for broadcast systems. Using bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and iterative decoding (ID), the performance of HM systems can be further improved. In this paper, we study HM system with BICM-ID or HM-BICM-ID. Since the performance of BICM-ID depends on signal mapping rules, we derive a mapping rule based on distance properties to minimize the bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, we perform the BER performance analysis for HM-BICM-ID based on binary erasure channel (BEC) modeling, which provides BER prediction without time-consuming simulations. Based on the derived BER prediction scheme, we can also perform system design and optimization for applications of HM-BICM-ID. For example, we are able to optimize the constellation priority parameter in a broadcast system to maximize the throughput.</P>

No-reference Sharpness Index for Scanning Electron Microscopy Images Based on Dark Channel Prior

( Qiaoyue Li ),( Leida Li ),( Zhaolin Lu ),( Yu Zhou ),( Hancheng Zhu ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2019 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.13 No.5

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image can link with the microscopic world through reflecting interaction between electrons and materials. The SEM images are easily subject to blurring distortions during the imaging process. Inspired by the fact that dark channel prior captures the changes to blurred SEM images caused by the blur process, we propose a method to evaluate the SEM images sharpness based on the dark channel prior. A SEM image database is first established with mean opinion score collected as ground truth. For the quality assessment of the SEM image, the dark channel map is generated. Since blurring is typically characterized by the spread of edge, edge of dark channel map is extracted. Then noise is removed by an edge-preserving filter. Finally, the maximum gradient and the average gradient of image are combined to generate the final sharpness score. The experimental results on the SEM blurred image database show that the proposed algorithm outperforms both the existing state-of-the-art image sharpness metrics and the general-purpose no-reference quality metrics.

Silicate Ions Derived from Calcium Silicate Extract Decelerate Ang II-Induced Cardiac Remodeling

        Li Xin,Zhang Yanxin,Jin Qishu,Song Qiaoyu,Fan Chen,Jiao Yiren,Yang Chen,Chang Jiang,Dong Zhihong,Que Yumei 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2023 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.20 No.5

BACKGROUND: Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is one of the main activators of heart failure. Currently, no drug can completely reverse or inhibit the development of pathological cardiac hypertrophy. To this end, we proposed a silicate ion therapy based on extract derived from calcium silicate (CS) bioceramics for the treatment of angiotensin II (Ang II) induced cardiac hypertrophy. METHODS: In this study, the Ang II induced cardiac hypertrophy mouse model was established, and the silicate ion extract was injected to mice intravenously. The cardiac function was evaluated by using a high-resolution Vevo 3100 small animal ultrasound imaging system. Wheat germ Agglutinin, Fluo4-AM staining and immunofluorescent staining was conducted to assess the cardiac hypertrophy, intracellular calcium and angiogenesis of heart tissue, respectively. RESULTS: The in vitro results showed that silicate ions could inhibit the cell size of cardiomyocytes, reduce cardiac hypertrophic gene expression, including atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and b-myosin heavy chain (b-MHC), decrease the content of intracellular calcium induced by Ang II. In vivo experiments in mice confirmed that intravenous injection of silicate ions could remarkably inhibit the cardiac hypertrophy and promote the formation of capillaries, further alleviating Ang II-induced cardiac function disorder. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the released silicate ions from CS possessed potential value as a novel therapeutic strategy of pathological cardiac hypertrophy, which provided a new insight for clinical trials.

Analysis of synonymous codon usage of chloroplast genome in Porphyra umbilicalis

        Guoling Li,Zonglian Pan,Shichen Gao,Yuyang He,Qiaoyu Xia,Yan Jin,Huipeng Yao 한국유전학회 2019 Genes & Genomics Vol.41 No.10

Background Synonymous codon usage bias is noticed in the genome of every organism, influenced by mutation pressure and natural selection. The analysis of codon usage pattern in Porphyra umbilicalis chloroplast genome are inferred while previous study focused on codon bias in nuclear genome. Objective To develop a better understanding of the factors affecting synonymous codon usage, codon usage patterns and nucleotide composition of 150 genes in P. umbilicalis cp genome, and provide a theoretical basis for genetic modification of chloroplast genome. Methods In this study, all codon usage bias parameters and nucleotide compositions were calculated by Python script, Codon W, DNA Star, CUSP of EMBOSS and Microsoft Excel. Results It shows that codon usage models are mainly influenced by compositional constraints under mutational pressure and synonymous codon prefers to use codons ending with A/T, comparing to C/G. The ENC value is slight low which shows the weak codon bias. For all coding genes of P. umbilicalis chloroplast genome except Photosystem I genes, a weak correlation between GC3 and GC12 suggests natural selection might play a significant role in synonymous codon usage bias. Conclusion The codon usage bias in P. umbilicalis cp genome is low and in some way or other, influenced by natural selection, mutation pressure, nucleotide composition. Our results can provide a theoretical basis for codon modification of exogenous genes, accuracy of prediction about new members of chloroplast gene family and identification of unknown genome.

      • Approximate maximum a posteriori detection for multiple-input-multiple-output systems with bit-level lattice reduction-aided detectors and successive interference cancellation

        Lin Bai,Qiaoyu Li,Wei Bai,Jinho Choi IET 2014 IET COMMUNICATIONS Vol.8 No.5

<P>For iterative detection and decoding (IDD) in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, although the maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector can achieve an optimal performance, because of its prohibitively high computational complexity, various low-complexity approximate MAP detectors are studied. Among the existing MIMO detectors for the non-IDD receivers, lattice reduction (LR)-aided detectors can provide a near maximum-likelihood (ML) detector's performance with reasonably low complexity, and they could be modified to be used in the IDD receivers. In this study, the authors propose a bit-level LR-aided MIMO detector whose performance can approach that of the MAP detector, where a priori information is taken into account for soft-decisions. Furthermore, the proposed method can be extended to large dimensional MIMO systems by channel matrix decomposition and successive interference cancellation, by which a significant complexity reduction can be achieved. Through simulations and complexity analysis, it is shown that a near-optimal performance is obtained by the authors proposed low-complexity bit-level LR-aided detector for the IDD in the MIMO systems.</P>
